Trump signs aviation deals in Vietnam

HANOI, 13 November 2017: Vietnam and the United States signed a series of energy and aviation deals Sunday during a visit to Hanoi by US president Donald Trump, who railed against Washington’s yawning trade deficit with the fast-growing nation.

Trump was in the communist capital at the tail-end of his swing through Asia where he has promoted his “America First” mantra on global trade — prioritising “fair” bilateral deals over sprawling multilateral pacts.

Several agreements were signed during his state visit Sunday, including those covering the natural gas sector, transport and aviation. Read more

Typhoon maroons tourists

HO CHI MINH CITY, 7 November 2017: Popular tourists spots, Hoi An and Hue in central Vietnam, suffered heavy flooding over the weekend, due to tropical storm Damrey.

Tour operators confirmed that trips have been disrupted along the coast and specifically to the two World Heritage destinations.

The storm made landfall near Nha Trang and followed the coastline up to Hue and Hoi An, resulting in heavy flooding and torrential rain that combined with strong winds. Read more

Floods hit APEC plans for Hoi An

HOI AN, 7 November 2017: At least 49 people have died after Typhoon Damrey slammed into central Vietnam, disaster officials said Monday, as heavy flooding cast doubt on a planned retreat for APEC leaders’ spouses to the ancient town of Hoi An.

The weather system hit just days before Vietnam welcomes world leaders to the APEC summit in Danang and has left several areas totally submerged in the worst flooding in years.

While Danang itself has not been seriously affected, heavy flooding has hit Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unique blend of buildings, some dating back to the 15th century. Read more

Typhoon hits Vietnam’s resorts

DANANG, 6 November 2017: At least 27 people have died and nearly two dozen are missing after Typhoon Damrey barrelled into Vietnam, authorities said Sunday, damaging tens of thousands of homes and submerging highways days before the country welcomes world leaders to the APEC summit.

The storm, which made landfall on Saturday, is the worst in decades to strike the country’s southern coastal region, an area normally spared the typhoons that typically hit further north.

More than 40,000 homes were damaged as heavy rains and 130 kph (80 mph) winds tore through the area, leaving 27 dead and 22 reported missing, according to the disaster management office. Read more

Vietjet to add Thai services

BANGKOK, 3 November 2017: VietJet Air has confirmed it will launch nonstop services to Chiang Mai and Phuket from its Ho Chi Minh City home base this December.

According to timetable details, released by Airlineroute for the winter timetable 2017/18, the nonstop service to Phuket will start 15 December with four weekly services on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

The Ho Chi Minh City-Chiang Mai route will be served by four weekly flights starting 12 December. Read more

Centara resort hosts wellness workshop

Vietnam signs codeshare with PG

BANGKOK, 1 November 2017: Vietnam Airlines signed off on a code-share agreement with Bangkok Airways, last week, that should build commercial sales between the two airlines on specified routes.

Vietnam Airline customers will be able to fly to Bangkok and connect with Bangkok Airways’ domestic flights ticketed through on Vietnam Airlines.

The formula works well with Bangkok Airways, which currently has codeshare deals with 24 foreign airlines and on some routes the codeshare contribution represents the majority of flight bookings. Read more

IHG outlines expansion in Southeast Asia

SINGAPORE, 20 October 2017: InterContinental Hotels Group announced, the 2017 Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP) the signing of four new properties, which includes the first Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants property in Southeast Asia.

The Kimpton brand will be introduced to Asia on Bali Island.

The other three properties will open in Vietnam;  InterContinental Sapa Resort, Holiday Inn Resort Sapa and Hotel Indigo Phu Quoc Starbay Read more

Danang promotes its gateway

DANANG, 20 October 2017: Danang authorities are backing efforts to develop tourism to welcome 9 million visitors by 2020, including both domestic and international visitors.

Of the 9 million arrivals, around 30% should be international visitors, but to achieve that goal more airlines must first introduce services to the central coastal city.

The promotional thrust positions Danang as the preferred gateway destination to the central coastal region that stretches from Hue in the north to Hoi An in the south.  It is also the gateway for eco-tours to the central highlands. Read more
