Langkawi sets its 2022 tourism goal

LANGKAWI, 2 June 2022: Malaysia’s top holiday island, Langkawi could attract around 2.5 million visitors this year, according to a Langkawi Development Authority forecast.

As reported by the New Straits Times, the LADA chief executive officer Nasaruddin Abdul Muttalib said he was making the estimate based on data showing 890,000 tourists visited the island during the five months ending 27 May.

“This is in line with the positive recovery of the tourism sector following the rise in tourist arrivals since the country reopened international borders on 1 April.

He made the comments during the opening of the Langkawi Geopark Carnival 2022 earlier this week. This year, Langkawi will place a strong emphasis on promoting cultural and sports events in the hope that it will boost arrivals to reach 2.5 million by year-end. Promotions will move up a gear in the domestic market mainly through social media channels to build awareness followed by campaigns to reach out to the travel trade worldwide and also introduce a strategy to provide airlines with incentives to start new routes to Langkawi from Europe during the last quarter of the year.

The island attracted 3.9 million international visitors in 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic brought lockdowns and strict travel restrictions in 2020.

Core promotions focus on the travel trade, where support from tour operators could speed up tourism recovery for the island’s tourism industry.

“We will be having promotional campaigns in Vietnam, followed by the World Travel Market in the UK and travel shows in China, Singapore and Thailand,” the LADA chief explained.

Asia Pacific passenger traffic climbs

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 June 2022: Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) reports a healthy increase in international passenger demand as border restrictions ease across the region, stimulating business and leisure travel.

AAPA released its Preliminary April 2022 traffic figures earlier this week, showing that Asia Pacific airlines recorded a 272.9% jump overall in international passengers carried (4.8 million) compared to April last year.

Demand rose to an average of 15.2% of the volumes posted in the pre-pandemic month of April 2019. In revenue passenger (RPK) terms, international passenger demand increased by a robust 302.7% year-on-year, reflecting the strength of long haul traffic. Available seat capacity expanded by 77.5% year-on-year, resulting in a solid 36.3 percentage point increase in the average international passenger load factor to 64.9% for the month, the highest level achieved since the pandemic in March 2020.

However, the start of the second quarter saw a further reduction in global manufacturing activity, with the Russia-Ukraine war and tight Covid-19 restrictions in China constraining production lines and hampering trade across major routes.

Against this backdrop, international air cargo demand as measured in international freight tonne-kilometres (FTK) fell for the second consecutive month in April by 8.5% year-on-year. Offered freight capacity decreased by 3.1% compared to the same month last year, leading to a 4.2 percentage point decline in the average international freight load factor to 70.3%.

Commenting on the results, AAPA director-general Subhas Menon said: “With vaccination rates high in the region, the general easing of border regulations has unleashed pent-up travel demand, as evidenced by the strong growth in international passenger numbers in April and healthy forward booking patterns.”

Menon noted: “By contrast, the air cargo business faces some challenges, from rising geopolitical tensions, persistent supply chain disruptions, to intensifying inflationary pressures. The first four months have seen international air cargo demand falling by 1.6% compared to the previous corresponding period, after a strong upturn in 2021.”

“Asia Pacific continues to lag in the recovery of international travel. To build on the current momentum towards a full recovery, it is vital that governments and industry stakeholders collaborate closely to simplify border measures and streamline digital applications to make air travel truly seamless,” AAPA’s director-general concluded.

Vietnam has something to count about

HANOI, 1 June 2022: Vietnam National Administration of Tourism resumes its headcount of International arrivals after a two-year pause noting that the General Statistics Office’s data showed a 70.6 leap in visits (172,900) during May compared with the previous month.

For the period January-May, GSO counted 365,300 international arrivals, 4.5 times higher than the same period last year but 95 percent lower than the same period of 2019, before the first wave of Covid-19 infections that caused lockdowns worldwide.

Vietnam has been witnessing a steady increase in arrivals since the country reopened tourism in mid-March when international flights resumed.

GSO data showed arrivals from Australia and the US grew by 2,918% and 2,192%, respectively, to 17,806 and 49,675. Arrivals from Europe were up 975% to 65,253.

Google searches for Vietnam travel showed high interest in the US, Australia, Singapore, France, Japan, Germany, Canada, India, the UK and Thailand.

Vietnam targets around 5 million foreign tourists this year compared to 18 million in 2019 before the Covid-19 first wave of infections.
