Praise for Sabah’s triple crown

LONDON, 9 November 2023: A British natural history publisher has hailed Sabah’s extraordinary triple-crown achievement as a powerful catalyst poised to rekindle a profound fascination with the state’s exceptional wildlife.

John Beaufoy, an avid wildlife enthusiast, believed this accolade would not only deepen the world’s appreciation for Sabah’s ecological wonders but also issue a captivating call to a global audience to explore the region’s rich biodiversity.

Also in the photo are Sri Pelancongan Sabah chairman Ken Pan (2nd right); Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer Noredah Othman (right); and Sabah Parks director Dr Maklarin Lakim (left).

“I’ve had the privilege of visiting Sabah multiple times over the past 25 years. With its newfound UNESCO triple-crown status, I firmly believe it will elevate Sabah, especially Kinabalu Park, to the pinnacle of wildlife history destinations,” he said.

Beaufoy shared his reflections following the unveiling of Sabah’s Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark during the World Travel Market 2023 at Excel London on Monday (6 November).

The launch was graced by Sabah Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai and Malaysian High Commissioner to the UK, Datuk Zakri Jaafar.

At the same time, they also launched a bird guidebook titled “A Naturalist’s Guide to Borneo’s Birds (4th edition)”, authored by Sabah’s Wong Tsu Shi and published by John Beaufoy Publishing.

Beaufoy pointed out that Sabah has already drawn many UK wildlife enthusiasts eager to explore the state’s diverse wildlife, from birdlife to butterflies and mammals.

He believed the UNESCO Global Geopark status would be a strong magnet, encouraging even more wildlife enthusiasts to consider Sabah a premier destination for wildlife watching.

Meanwhile, Zakri highlighted that this latest UNESCO recognition extends its impact beyond Sabah, encompassing Malaysia.

He remarked that the recognition would elevate the global status of both Sabah and Malaysia, positioning them at the forefront of international recognition and appreciation.

Addressing the arrival of UK tourists to Malaysia, Zakri noted that the country welcomed over 400,000 travellers from the UK before the pandemic.

“Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, as of September this year, over 100,000 UK visitors have already returned to Malaysia, signifying promising statistics.

“Abundant opportunities exist to further boost the number of UK visitors to Malaysia, and I firmly believe that the UNESCO Global Geopark status granted to Sabah will serve as a compelling draw for UK tourists to explore the unique flora and fauna that Malaysia has to offer,” he said.

Sabah achieved triple-crown status after UNESCO recognised the Kinabalu National Geopark as a Global Geopark in May this year.

This achievement has made Sabah the third destination in the world to attain this coveted triple crown, following Shennongjia in China and Jeju Island in Korea.

Sabah’s other two UNESCO “crowns” are the Kinabalu Park, designated a World Heritage Site in December 2000, and the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve, declared in June 2014.

In his speech, Joniston underscored the Sabah government’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism practices.

“The World Travel Market 2023 is a momentous occasion for Sabah as it provides us with the opportunity to showcase our latest UNESCO crown jewel to the world, highlighting its incredible geology, rich ecosystems, local communities, and the conservation work that earned it UNESCO recognition.

“Sabah is not merely a destination but a pledge to preserve the planet’s natural wonders for future generations. The state government aims to empower rural communities within the Kinabalu Geopark by involving them in both conservation and the tourism industry.

“This recognition as the 195th UNESCO Global Geopark solidifies Sabah’s place on the world stage, and we invite the global travel and tourism community to experience the splendour of this remarkable Geopark, contributing to its sustainable development and global awareness,” he added.

Pandaw sails The Ganges

SINGAPORE, 8 November 2023: Pandaw welcomed its first guests of the Indian season this week in Kolkata as the river cruises’ local purser, Mr Sam, and crew greeted guests in traditional Indian style.

Sailing 12 nights along the mighty Ganges River to Varanasi, the small Pandaw river ship takes guests to the heart of life along this most famous of rivers to places inaccessible by road or train, all in the usual comfort and style that is Pandaw’s speciality.

Pandaw has released forward dates for sailings on this special expedition for 2024/25, reflecting a robust interest and positive sales for staterooms aboard this river cruise series in India.

More about the Ganges Expedition cruise

The cruise was first introduced in 2019 when Pandaw inaugurated an ‘all Ganges’ voyage of 1,000 miles from Kolkata to Varanasi. Today, faced with navigation challenges and numerous pontoon bridges hindering navigation, the cruise sails as far as Patna and then overland to Varanasi.

However, the revised route still covers sailing the scenic sections of the Ganges from the colonial splendours of Kolkota through the enchanting rural districts of West Bengal along the Hoogly and the great expanse of the Ganga itself with its pristine bird and wildlife and cultural treasures dotted along the banks.

Though in the days of the British Raj, paddle steamers plied this route regularly, with the advent of the railways in India, river navigation was abandoned, and the rivers were allowed to silt up. Thanks to a multi-million dollar investment from the Indian Government, channels have been dredged and buoyed, and hi-tech GPS-based aids installed, enabling seasonal navigation.

Varanasi, said to be the oldest inhabited city on the planet, is the most sacred city of Hinduism and a place of overwhelming beauty, at the same time poignantly moving with its cremation ghats. Varanasi is undoubtedly the goal of any ‘passage to India’, and at the other end of the holy river stands Kolkata, in all its Raj-like magnificence. Between lies several of the most important Buddhist sites in the country, fascinating cities great and small, as well as expanses of empty rivers teeming with bird life, not to mention the Gangeatic dolphin.

To book, visit pandaw.com, email [email protected] or speak to your local travel agent.

LONDON, 8 November 2023: Sabah unveiled the Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark during the World Travel Market 2023 held at London’s Excel earlier this week.

Representing the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Hon Datuk Joniston Bangkuai describes the Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark as a treasure trove of stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and geological wonders, accentuating both its natural beauty and profound geological significance.

This achievement is incredibly significant for Sabah, as it became the third location in the world, after China and Korea, to attain the prestigious triple crown status.

Sabah’s two other UNESCO “crowns” include the Kinabalu Park, designated a World Heritage Site in December 2000, and the UNESCO Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve, declared in June 2014.

With this announcement, the global network of UNESCO Global Geoparks has grown to 195 sites across 48 countries, further solidifying Kinabalu Park’s place among the world’s most extraordinary natural and cultural wonders.

“It is important to note that Sabah Parks plays a crucial role in the protection, management and promotion of the geological heritage within the Kinabalu Geopark.

“This involves making these unique geological assets accessible to the public and ensuring long-term conservation while actively contributing to the pursuit of UNESCO Global Geopark status.

This recognition underscores Sabah’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism practices.

“Sabah is not just a destination but a pledge to preserve the planet’s natural wonders for future generations,” Bangkuai emphasises.

The Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark, sprawling over 4,750 square kilometres and spanning three districts – Ranau, Kota Marudu, and Kota Belud, is home to numerous rural villages. These communities are paramount in preserving the region’s unique culture and heritage.

With this recognition, Bangkuai expresses the hope of the Sabah state government to empower these rural communities by involving them in both conservation and the tourism industry.

“The World Travel Market 2023 is a significant moment for Sabah. It’s our chance to showcase our latest UNESCO crown jewel to the world, emphasising its incredible geology, rich ecosystems, local communities, and the conservation work that earned it UNESCO recognition.

“This recognition as the 195th UNESCO Global Geopark solidifies Sabah’s place on the world stage, and we invite the global travel and tourism community to experience the splendour of this remarkable geopark, contributing to its sustainable development and global awareness,” he adds.

Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark highlights

1. Geological Marvels: Kinabalu Park boasts unique geological formations, some dating back millions of years. Visitors will be captivated by stunning rock formations, caves, and intriguing landscapes.

2. Biodiversity: The geopark is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the region. It’s a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.

3. Cultural Richness: Indigenous communities, with their vibrant cultures and traditions, coexist harmoniously within the geopark. Visitors can engage with these communities and learn about their way of life.

4. Sustainable Tourism: The Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark exemplifies sustainable tourism practices, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy and learn from this unique site.

In addition to introducing the Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark, Bangkuai is also launching a bird guidebook by Sabah’s Wong Tsu Shi, titled “A Naturalist’s Guide to Borneo’s Birds (4th edition).”

This concise yet thorough guide provides insights into 280 bird species, the region’s geography, climate, and top bird-watching spots. It also includes an updated checklist for avid birdwatchers.

The 4th edition features new species accounts and captivating photos, making it a must-have for bird enthusiasts, both experienced and beginners, eager to explore Borneo’s remarkable birdlife.

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 November 2023: In collaboration with Tourism Malaysia, the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents worked with Rachel Gray, a recognised British artist of wildlife portraiture, to launch the ‘Sustainable Malaysia Initiative’ at the Tourism Malaysia Pavilion during the World Travel Market 2023 earlier this week.

Rachel Gray produced one large format of the Malaysian tiger, a recognised endangered species. The portrait, through the use of technology, will be converted to Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT’s), which have an intrinsic value and will be auctioned for sale at a date to be finalised later in the year.

The proceeds from the auction and sale of the Non-Fungible Tokens will go towards supporting sustainable tourism at the Royal Belum State Park in Perak and sustaining the indigenous communities that reside in the park.

The Malaysian tourism delegation was attending the World Travel Market in London from 6 to 8 November 2023.

“Known and loved for our rich biodiversity, especially from the European market, this initiative is hoped to bring further awareness of Malaysia’s ecotourism products and sustainable tourism, apart from supporting the local communities and their conservation efforts. This is also in line with our focus to promote Malaysia as the Top-of-the-Mind Ecotourism Destination of the World,” said Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia secretary-general YBhg Dato’ Roslan Tan Sri Abdul Rahman.

Also, MATTA president Nigel Wong took the opportunity to thank Malaysia Aviation Group for their support in providing a return ticket to London for Rachel Gray for this important campaign at the WTM London.

“The collaboration with Rachel Gray is particularly important as we feel that Rachel’s work tells the perfect story of the beauty of Malaysia’s rich wildlife heritage that we are trying to save and sustain for the benefit of the generations to come but also for us all here and now,” said Wong.

“This is also the first collaboration between MATTA and the British artist. We are proud of our close ties and the journey we are taking together towards a more sustainable future.”
