AirAsia flies to Sihanoukville

SEPANG, 11 AUGUST 2017: AirAsia introduced its newest route, Thursday, linking Kuala Lumpur and Sihanoukville, in Cambodia.

Effective 10 August, the airline flies four weekly services direct from Kuala Lumpur to Cambodia’s southern coastal port and beach resort.

The town’s airport is located 7 km to the north of the port and has up until now been served by domestic airlines and a flight from Vietnam. Read more

Farms get closer to tourism

PHNOM PENH, 9 August 2017: Agro-tourism will be in the spotlight at the upcoming 2nd Greater Mekong Subregion Agriculture Ministers Meeting, this September, in Siem Reap.

The second agriculture minsters’ meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 September and in an unprecedented move rolls out the welcome mat  for tourism executives.

In an open invitation posted by the Mekong Tourism Office, Tuesday, tour operators, hoteliers, airlines, restaurants and retailers are on the invitee list. Read more

Phoenix Voyages Group sales and management teams came from the group’s offices in Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Korea.

On camera at pub street

SIEM REAP, 27 July 2017: Siem Reap provincial government wants to install more CCTV security cameras along a popular tourist pub street in an effort to tighten safety and security for visitors.

Khmer Times reported the scheme was supported financially by MineBea, a private Japanese company.

The street is packed with tourists in the evening visiting restaurants and pubs, but there has been an increase in petty crime that worries authorities. A study of the street showed at least another 30 cameras were required to cover the area adequately. Read more

Cambodia to link World Heritage

PHNOM PENH, 26 July 2017: Cambodia will develop heritage tourism packages now that it has three World Heritage sites under its belt.

The three World Heritage Sites are Angkor Wat, listed in 1992, Preah Vihear (2008) and the Sambor Prei Kuk archaeological site in Kampong Thom province listed earlier this month.

Khmer Times quoted Tourism Minister Thong Khon saying the addition of Sambor Prei Kuk archaeological site as a UNESCO world heritage would prompt new tour programmes. Read more

Halal food moves in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, 25 July 2017: Cambodia will cooperate with Thailand and Malaysia to establish halal standards to cater to the rising number of Muslim travellers visiting Cambodia, especially from the Middle East.

Khmer Times quoted Commerce Secretary of State, Mao Thora, saying there were many more Muslim travellers  visiting the country so it was important to introduce a halal standard.

“We will learn from Thailand and Malaysia to bring halal standards to Cambodia soon,” the minister said. Read more

First Aid training at Angkor park

SIEM REAP, 24 July 2017: Apsara Authority in a joint effort with a  Japanese Volunteer Medical Team launched a one-day First Aid Training session, last week, for 40 tourist officers of the Department of Angkor Tourism Development.

According to the authority, the training introduced officers to the basics and also how to respond if a visitor to the historical park suffered a heart attack.

Bid to boost ecotourism

PHNOM PENH, 21 July 2017: Various ministries in Cambodia that have links to tourism will work together to boost ecotourism.

Khmer Times reported ministries of tourism, environment, agriculture, forestry and fisheries will work together to help communities take advantage of opportunities to get involved in ecotourism.

Tourism Minister Thong Khon was quoted saying there are about 2,000 fishing and forest communities nationwide, but only a few offer tourism services. Read more

Duty of care at new heritage site

KAMPONG THOM, 20 July 2017: Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen has called on the international committee responsible for preserving Angkor Wat to extend its cover to include the Sambor Prei Kuk archaeological site.

Khmer Times quoted Prime Minister Hun Sen saying the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of Angkor (ICC-Angkor) should broaden its remit to take care of the new world heritage site.

He said he had discussed the issue with Culture and Fine Arts Minister Phoeung Sakona and informed the King of the proposal. Read more

Efforts to control Angkor visits

SIEM REAP, 18 July 2017: Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism and China National Tourism Administration have recently discussed a proposed Comprehensive Tourism Development Plan for the Angkor Wat area.

Agence Kampuchea Presse reported that the Ministry of Tourism wanted to achieve sustainable and inclusive tourism development in response to the annual increase in visitors to Angkor, a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.

There are fears that the destination will exceed an acceptable tourism capacity ceiling. Read more
