Tips on staying safe when on holiday

SINGAPORE, 30 June 2023: UK home security experts ADT offer advice on how to keep yourself and your valuables safe when travelling.

ADT UK&I general manager Michele Bennett says: “Holidays are a time when people should be able to relax and unwind, but unfortunately, that is not always the case. Stolen money, passports and luggage can cause huge stress when travelling. Here is our advice on keeping your valuables safe when you are away so as not to ruin your holiday.”

How to stay safe in a hotel

Never say your room number out loud

When checking into your hotel, ask the receptionist to write down your room number instead of telling you out loud. This stops nearby guests from knowing which room they are staying in. It is also a good idea to check your surroundings when entering and leaving your room to ensure that no one knows which room you are staying in.

Lock your doors

Most hotels have a key locking system and a bolt lock on the door. We recommend locking the door using the key and bolt system for complete security. This stops any ‘master copy’ keys from being able to open your hotel room door.

Do not leave service signs on the door

While leaving a service sign on your hotel room door may be helpful, leaving a ‘please clean’ note can notify potential thieves that your room is empty. It is recommended that you notify hotel reception staff that you would like your room cleaned and, if you feel it necessary, for additional security, stay in your hotel room whilst it is being cleaned.

Keep cash, passports and IDs on you at all time

It is recommended to wear a small, secure bag to carry valuable items such as passports and IDs so that you are aware of their whereabouts at all times. We do not recommend carrying large sums of cash around, so taking your bank card and withdrawing small amounts can be much safer. Use your mobile to pay bills. If you are in a country which uses another currency, investing in a travel card can save you money as you may not be charged overseas rates, and the exchange rates are often better.

Invest in a portable safe

Take a small, portable safe on holiday if you cannot carry your valuables. Most hotels offer a safe in the room. Safes often have an overriding code or a ‘back entrance’, which means hotel staff can access the contents easily. Having your own safe removes that risk.

Lock your suitcases

Investing in a strong suitcase lock can save you stress from the moment you enter the airport. It discourages baggage handlers and means you can use your suitcase as secure storage during your holiday. You can lock larger items in the suitcase and take the key to ensure hotel staff cannot enter your luggage.

Invest in smart tags

A smart tag is a small GPS-enabled device, perfect for putting in your suitcase. In the event your suitcase goes missing, you will be able to track its whereabouts from your smartphone. This can be especially helpful if your luggage hasn’t reached your destination, avoiding long waiting periods at the airport.

Thai AirAsia will resume flights from Bangkok to Colombo

BANGKOK, 30 June 2023: Thai AirAsia will resume flights from Bangkok to Colombo starting 9 July 2023.

Initially, the airline will operate four weekly flights on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, possibly going daily during the peak holiday season in December.

The service resumes to the capital of Sri Lanka after more than a three-year pause caused by Covid travel lockdowns.

Flight FD140 will depart Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport at 1945 and arrive in Colombo at 2200. The return flight FD141 will depart Colombo at 2300 and arrive in Bangkok (DMK) at 0405 the following morning.

Bookings are open on the AirAsia website for flights in early July, with the lead-in roundtrip fare pegged at USD224.

THAI welcomes A320 to its fleet

BANGKOK, 30 June 2023: Thai Airways InternanRtional has delivered four Airbus A320 aircraft that will be initially deployed on routes to India.

The four aircraft are configured with a single economy class cabin and will be deployed on routes from Bangkok to Delhi TG323/324) starting 1 July 2023 and Bangkok – Mumbai (TG351/352) beginning 2 July 2023.

Commenting on the fleet additions, the airline said the A320s would enhance fleet efficiency, improve aircraft utilisation, and strengthen the THAI route network to support the rising travel demands.

Earlier in the week, Thailand’s National News Bureau reported the airline had entered an agreement to acquire 30 new aircraft by the end of the year and could double its fleet of narrow-body jets over the next decade.

NNT quoted the airline’s chief executive officer Chai Eamsiri who Reuters interviewed at the airline’s headquarters in Bangkok. He confirmed THAI had filed a ‘proposal request’ to Airbus and Boeing for 30 wide-body aircraft and an undisclosed number of narrow-body aircraft.

The carrier aims to capitalise on a post-pandemic travel boom by bolstering regional routes. Still, there is concern over whether Airbus and Boeing can ramp up output to meet delivery targets.

News that the airline can once more buy aircraft will concern passengers still waiting for refunds caused by cancelling flights during the Covid-19 pandemic and companies still waiting to be paid for services rendered when the airline filed for bankruptcy protection.

Chai said THAI, which began a bankruptcy-protected restructuring of debt worth THB400 billion (USD11.17 billion) in 2021, currently has a fleet of 20 A320s and has secured a dozen new A321neo on lease for delivery in 2025 and 2026.

These aircraft would be deployed to serve destinations in Southeast Asia, India, southern China and southern Japan – key medium-haul routes that THAI wants to reinforce.

Chai noted that the carrier’s wide-body fleet would also increase from 45 currently to 56 aircraft by the first quarter of next year, with the additional jets coming on dry lease contracts, which typically do not include flight crew. Chai added that the aircraft would be used on long-distance intercontinental routes to Australia and Europe that have seen a strong recovery since the pandemic.

Chai, a former Thai Airways chief financial officer who took over as CEO last November, said the airline’s pandemic-driven restructuring plan was on track and it would relist on the stock market by the first quarter of 2025.

Booking.com tests AI Trip Planner

SINGAPORE, 30 June 2023: Booking.com has announced its new AI Trip Planner, introduced in beta to a selection of US travellers using the company’s app effective 28 June.

Built upon the foundation of Booking.com’s existing machine learning models that recommend destination and accommodation options to millions of travellers on the platform daily, the AI Trip Planner is also partially powered by large language model (LLM) technology from OpenAI’s ChatGPT API to create a new conversational experience for people to start their trip planning process.

A new way to search on Booking.com

Travellers can ask the AI Trip Planner general travel-related questions, as well as more specific queries to support any stage of their trip planning process, including scoping out potential destinations and accommodation options, providing travel inspiration based on the individual traveller’s needs and requirements, as well as creating itineraries for a particular city, country or region. It gives travellers a personal travel valet offering the kind of input that, up until now, has been exclusive to the travel agency space.

More tailored and relevant travel recommendations

Travellers can easily chat with the pilot AI Trip Planner to describe what they’re looking for in broad or specific terms, ask questions and refine their search in real time, with new options surfacing in seconds.

From looking for inspiration on romantic beach destination options in the Caribbean to zeroing in on a specific list of vacation homes for a family of four with air conditioning and a pool, the AI Trip Planner makes recommendations in a quick, conversational way.

Integrated travel planning experience

The AI Trip Planner takes the trip planning process one step further by providing travellers with a visual list of destinations and properties, including Booking.com’s pricing information, with deep links to view more details. Travellers can go back and forth between their chat with the AI Trip Planner and the Booking.com app interface as they consider options for their trip. With just a tap on any accommodation they are interested in, they can complete the reservation, as the AI Trip Planner is directly integrated into the booking experience in the Booking.com app.

“Our primary aim at Booking.com has always been to leverage technology to make travel easier,” said Booking.com CEO Glenn Fogel.

“The recent developments with generative AI are accelerating the work we’ve been doing for years with machine learning to enhance and improve every aspect of the customer experience on our platform, whether optimising the right order to display a hotel’s photos or surfacing the most relevant reviews. Our new AI Trip Planner is simply the next step in our ongoing journey to explore how we can bring even more value, and hopefully enjoy, to the entire trip planning process.”

Beginning 28 June, the beta AI Trip Planner became available to a small sample of Booking.com Genius members in the US and will continue rollout to US Travellers over the next few weeks to remaining members resident in the US. To use the AI Trip Planner, they must be signed in to their US Booking.com account in the app and have their language settings set to English.

Utu acquires CardsPal to boost tax-free shopping

BANGKOK, 30 June 2023: Utu closes USD33 million deal, acquires the SC Ventures-Incubated CardsPal to re-engineer Tax-Free shopping globally. The travel technology company says its latest USD33 million deal in combined transaction value will enhance the customer experience in tax-free shopping.

The deal comprises an acquisition and a funding round, which consists of both a portion of new funding from SC Ventures and the rollover of earlier funding from Singapore-based investors who supported the company through the pandemic.

As part of the deal, utu is announcing the acquisition of CardsPal, a Singapore-based platform focused on hyper-localised rewards promotions, for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition will allow utu to accelerate growth by leveraging CardsPal’s mobile-first technology and incorporating its talent into the wider organisation. Pivotal to utu’s decision to acquire CardsPal is SC Ventures’ support to incubate the startup to become a full-fledged tech platform that utu can leverage to bolster its tax-free shopping offerings.

Utu co-founder and CEO Asad Jumabhoy commented: “The cross-border travel market is ripe for a technology-driven transformation, with tax-free shopping presenting vast untapped potential. By enhancing the value of VAT and GST refunds for travellers, we’ve reimagined the cross-border retail experience and devised a technology-based business model unlocking previously inaccessible value. This strategy benefits all stakeholders—brands, hotels, airlines, and VAT refund operators—while enabling governments to recycle VAT refunds within their borders compliantly.”

In 2023, the travel industry is expected to reach USD9.5 trillion or 95% of 2019’s pre-pandemic peak, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council. Despite the remarkable turnaround, McKinsey reports that only about 1% of venture funding in the past 15 years has gone to travel, mostly in short-term rental hospitality. The tax-free shopping sector, where tourists can reclaim the value-added tax (VAT) on their purchases, is especially subject to this innovation lag. Tax-free shopping was designed to stimulate tourist spending, but refund processing cost has stymied its potential benefits for travellers.

By linking payments, rewards and shopping, utu introduces new value for tourist shoppers, retailers, VAT refund operators and the tax-free shopping value chain. Travellers using utu’s Tax-Free Card can gain up to 40% more value by opting for frequent flyer miles or hotel points over cash refunds. utu can also issue immediate store vouchers equivalent to up to 120% of the VAT or GST paid during overseas shopping. Airlines partner with utu to increase revenue from tourist shopping. Utu currently partners with 10 airlines. They include Thai Airways International, Air France-KLM, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines.

Jumabhoy clarified that utu plays no role in refunding VAT in Thailand. This will continue to be done by the Revenue Department, and tourists must obtain their VAT refunds when departing Thailand as normal.

“We are an additional product layer above the VAT refund process. We intend to drive greater spending and shopping in Thailand by recycling value leaving the country back into the local ecosystem,” Jumabhoy added.

Philippine Airlines serves the island from Manila using its ATR-72 or Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft. The flight takes two hours and 30 minutes using the ATR-72.
