Fit seniors are a new travel breed
NEW DELHI, 14 March 2011 – The typical tourist in Asia used to be a young backpacker in need of a shower, but these days there are just as many older and retired people roaming the continent seeking its secrets.
With money and time to spare, the new breed of Western visitor is hitting the road in India, China and elsewhere, armed with an adventurous spirit, an inexhaustible thirst for knowledge and a keen eye for a decent mattress.
“This is a major growing sector for us,” said Karan Anand, an executive at New Delhi-based tour company Cox and King’s.

BANGKOK, 7 July 2010 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand has allocated a budget of Bt3 million, for the fourth year in a row, to support seniors travel in the domestic market, according to a National News Bureau report.
TAT central region director, Chaisong Churit, confirmed the project would focus on seniors 55 years and over with an emphasis on creating healthy activities and encouraging seniors to explore Thailand. The programme was initially introduced four years ago.

The downturn in global travel has forced an industry-wide scramble for resilient and productive niche-markets. A report issued last week by ITB Berlin, the world’s largest trade show, identified two that still hold promise – high yield luxury travellers, and seniors.
Entitled “ITB World Travel Trends Report 2010” the report was prepared by the research company IPK International on behalf of ITB Berlin.
