Asia Pacific visits close in on 2019 marker

BANGKOK, 24 October 2023: After recurring annual contractions in international visitor arrivals in 2020 and 2021, the tide turned in 2022 with 44 destinations across the Asia Pacific region returning a collective annual gain of almost 124.2 million foreign arrivals, to return a collective inbound count of nearly 265.5 million.

That’s the conclusion of the Annual Tourism Monitor 2023’ report released Monday by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA). It shows IVA numbers in 2022 were the strongest since 2019, heralding the much-awaited resurgence of the Asia Pacific’s international travel and tourism sector.

Infographic 1: Aggregate IVAs into/across Asia Pacific destinations, 2018 to 2022.

There were wide differences at the three Asia Pacific destination region levels. The Pacific had the strongest growth rate in 2022 year-over-year, whereas Asia received both the largest number of arrivals and the greatest annual increase in absolute numbers from 2021.

Infographic 2: IVAs into/across Asia Pacific destination regions, 2022.

IVAs into and across Asia in 2022 reached only 27% of 2019 levels. The Americas had the strongest recovery, with 69%, followed by the Pacific, with over 57%.

These are generally very positive results, but even more heartening are those for the early periods of 2019 to 2023, where the strengthening of international arrivals, which began in the first periods of 2022, continued in early 2023.

Infographic 3: Aggregate IVAs into Asia Pacific destinations, year-to-date, 2019 to 2023.

Every year-to-date figure is consistent for each of the 38 destinations with early period arrivals data and their respective months covered between 2019 and 2023. This data indicates how arrivals into and across Asia Pacific are trending.

The IVA growth that began in early 2022 has gained momentum in early 2023, with the addition of more than 93.3 million foreign arrivals, a volume increase of more than double compared to the previous period. This has boosted the recovery rate for early 2023 to more than 68% of the early 2019 IVA levels.

Infographic 4: IVAs into/across Asia Pacific destination regions, year-to-date 2023.

Although Asia may have been slower in returning to growth up until 2022, the early 2023 figures show a very powerful return to dominance in the Asia Pacific mix of arrivals. Asia had the strongest performance of the three destination regions against the metrics of IVAs year-to-date, period-to-period growth rate and an increase in IVAs. Even the recovery rate for Asia, while still the lowest at 62.4%, is a 35 percentage point improvement over 2022 and is only six percentage points below the Asia Pacific average.

Of particular interest is the mix of source markets fuelling these recovery rates. Most source regions have achieved recovery rates above 80% in early 2023. The exception is Asia, which has improved its arrival numbers for the Asia Pacific to just a little over 52%.

Infographic 5: Recovery rates of IVAs into/across Asia Pacific year-to-date 2021-2023, by source region.

That raises a critical issue because, in 2019, Asia was the dominant supplier of international visitor arrivals to the Asia Pacific, accounting for nearly 63% of total arrivals in the region. Therefore, any decline in those source markets poses an obvious challenge for the Asia Pacific.

Although Asia’s recovery rate as a source region in early 2023 is relatively low, at just over 54%, it marks a dramatic improvement of almost 43 percentage points compared to early 2022. This demonstrates significant growth momentum, and the full calendar year 2023 results are eagerly awaited.

Among all the source markets in the Asia Pacific region, mainland China is understandably the most significant in terms of volume. In 2019, it accounted for almost 30% of the IVAs from Asia and 19% of the total aggregate visitor numbers to Asia Pacific destinations.

In early 2023, visitor arrivals from mainland China dramatically increased, surpassing 23 million. This marks the strongest early-period performance since early 2019. However, it still represents only 34% of the early 2019 arrivals. With the recent relaxation of restrictions and the reintroduction of group travel, a significant improvement can be expected by the end of the calendar year 2023.

PATA Chairman Peter Semone noted that “the overall growth in international visitor arrivals within the Asia Pacific is primarily fueled by Asia, serving as both a source and destination region, with mainland China playing a dominant role in visitor flows.”

He added: “Visitor growth from China has been relatively subdued until now. However, we can now expect rapid change with the relaxation of most pandemic-imposed restrictions. Experience shows us that when change occurs in China, it is both rapid and impactful. The question, however, is whether the destinations in Asia Pacific are prepared, as change involves not only an increase in visitor numbers but also evolving expectations and demands from these visitors.”

Semone concluded: “PATA forecasts of visitor demand indicate that, under the medium scenario, international visitors by the end of 2023 are predicted to exceed 516 million, approaching 76% of the pre-pandemic levels of 2019. This is expected to increase to 107% in 2024 and 116% in 2025. The wave is coming, and we must prepare ourselves to ensure a better, stronger and more resilient tourism and travel industry.”

CX reports a strong September recovery

HONG KONG, 23 October 2023: Travel sentiment remains strong as Cathay Pacific gears up for the next holiday wave, according to the airline’s latest traffic figures for September 2023, released at the weekend.

Cathay Pacific carried 1,542,144 passengers last month, an increase of 480.1% compared with September 2022. The month’s revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) increased 316% year-on-year. Passenger load factor increased by 11.2 percentage points to 83.7%, while capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), increased by 260.4% year on year. In the first nine months of 2023, passengers carried increased by 1,099% against a 546.7% increase in capacity and a 736.8% increase in RPKs, as compared with the same period for 2022.

The airline carried 119,963 tonnes of cargo last month, an increase of 15.3% compared with September 2022. The month’s cargo revenue tonne kilometres (RFTKs) increased 16.9% year-on-year. The cargo load factor decreased by 5.3 percentage points to 61.1%, while capacity, measured in available cargo tonne kilometres (AFTKs), increased by 26.9% year on year. In the first nine months of 2023, the tonnage increased by 20.1% against a 77.7% increase in capacity and a 53.8% increase in RFTKs, compared to the same period for 2022.

Regarding the results, chief customer and commercial officer Lavinia Lau said: “As we exited the busy peak summer months for passenger travel, we saw increased student traffic in September ahead of the start of the new school year, particularly in the UK. To cater for the strong demand, we increased the frequency of our flights between Hong Kong and the UK in September, with our services from Hong Kong achieving load factors of 98%.

“In addition to student traffic, there was a notable increase in outbound passenger travel from Hong Kong during the last week of September, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. We also saw strong demand from the Greater Bay Area and the rest of the Chinese Mainland for travel to Hong Kong and destinations beyond the holiday period.

“Meanwhile, demand for Hangzhou was elevated with the Asian Games. Cathay Pacific was proud to carry many athletes, spectators and officials to attend this incredible sporting occasion. It has also been great to see more conferences and exhibitions in Hong Kong, stimulating demand for premium cabins as we near the traditional business travel peak.

Cargo

“On the cargo side, September marked the start of the traditional peak period, and demand strengthened across most of the network compared with the previous month. Capacity also grew as passenger services were added on some key cargo routes.

“E-commerce remained a bright spot, particularly on the Americas trade lanes. Our mail business continued gaining momentum, with several post offices worldwide adopting our newly launched Cathay Mail solution to improve customer experience.

Outlook

“Looking ahead at the coming months, on the travel side, we will continue to increase capacity as much as is feasible to provide more choice and flexibility for our customers. Earlier this month, we resumed our Chicago passenger service, which received a very encouraging response from our customers. With the next holiday period not until Christmas, we will remain agile to capture demand, including connecting traffic via the Hong Kong hub.

“For cargo, loads are expected to build over the next two months, reflecting the year-end demand, and we have been adding freighter capacity on our transpacific routes to cater for this. Our intermodal sea-air feeder services from Dongguan will continue to grow, providing customers a cost-effective option to move freight from the Greater Bay Area to the Hong Kong hub and onto our global network.”

The Cathay Group, on 11 October 2023, announced that shareholder approval had been granted to proceed with a proposed capital reduction, which, when completed, will facilitate the Group to buy back 50% – HK$9.75 billion – of the preference shares held by the Hong Kong SAR Government before the end of this year, and the remaining 50% by the end of July 2024, subject to market conditions and the Group’s business operations at the relevant time.
