Thailand’s tourism tax back on the table

BANGKOK, 6 May 2024: Thailand is revisiting a controversial THB300 tourism tax proposal that has been on and off the table for five years.

The Federation of Thai Tourism Association recently confirmed it is preparing a white paper on the pros and cons at a time when the country is expecting record visitor arrivals that could breach the 40 million mark by the end of 2024.

12 million plus visits between 1 January and 30 April and THB583,902 million in revenue. (The ministry has not posted an English language snapshot since the Covid era.)

Resurrecting the tourism tax proposal for yet another review could gain traction this time as the country faces an unprecedented boom in tourism. It has sparked calls for a fund to restore and reverse negative impacts on natural and cultural assets. Ministry of Tourism and Sports’s latest release indicate the country welcomed 12,127447 visitors from 1 January to 30 April 2024, an increase of 39% compared with the same period in 2023. Revenue earned from the visits was estimated at

THB583,902 million. This outstanding performance is reminiscent of past Visit Thailand Years, which pushed arrival increases into the double-digit zone.

The Federation of Thai Travel Tourism Association is ready to support the introduction of the tax, marking a significant change of heart. In the past, the proposal failed to attract attention from associations representing tourism’s private sector, particularly during the post-Covid recovery years due to the colossal losses incurred since 2020.

However, support for the government to implement a new tax to curb overtourism will be short-lived if the collection process is inconvenient, creating long queues at airports or land checkpoints. Then there is the question of transparency. The only practical option to ensure transparency is to add the tax to the cost of airline tickets and offer a handling fee to the airlines for managing the process. That would leave the thorny issue of how to collect the tax from travellers at land borders. Considering the collection costs and inevitable leakage, exempting overland travellers might be more feasible until there is a scam-proof digital solution to pay the fee directly to an online government wallet. It would also be an incentive to encourage visitors to explore lesser-known destinations using land transport.

The ministry snapshot of the top five source markets ranked China top with 2,351,909 visits followed by Malaysia (1,569,856), Russia (767,210), South Korea (679,481) and India (643,587).

The figures are based on preliminary data from the Immigration Bureau at airports and overland checkpoints, excluding border pass travellers.

Meanwhile, the Tourism Authority of Thailand reported Q1 data (January to March). Visits reached 9,381,098, up by 1.3 million compared with Q1 2023, a 44% increase.

Factors supporting the surge in visits included a robust turnover of visitors during the Chinese New Year Festival, driven by visa-free entry and the introduction of more flights on routes from China, promotional campaigns in key source markets, and the impact of concerts and special events. However, rising international airfares continued to impact travel to Thailand.

Tourism Malaysia sets out VMY 2026 goals

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 May 2024: Tourism Malaysia says the nationwide Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign should attract around 35.6 million tourists and generate MYR147.1 billion in receipts.

The VM 2026 roadmap is built around three core strategies – creating demand, increasing traffic, and prioritising target markets. Key initiatives include branding and marketing blitz, strategic partnerships for joint promotions/tactical campaigns and market segmentation.

YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, delivering his mandate at the Tourism Malaysia Strategic Direction Towards VM2026 Networking Session.

Malaysia’s notable tourism achievements in in Q1 2024 are encouraging, the national tourism agency reported last week. From January to March, Malaysia attracted 5.8 million visitors, representing a remarkable growth of 32.5% compared to 4.3 million during the same quarter last year.

The top 10 markets contributing to this success were Singapore, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Brunei, India, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Philippines.

Key target markets are prioritised into three tiers, led by first-level priorities such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Australia. The second-level priorities include South Korea, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the United Kingdom, followed by third-level priorities comprising Chinese Taipei and Germany. Apart from traditional markets such as Brunei, Thailand and Singapore, the focus is also on emerging markets like Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, tourism products and travel experiences will be tailored for niche segments like nature-based tourism, experiential tourism, medical and wellness tourism, responsible tourism, luxury, weddings, Muslim-friendly and gastronomy travel.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said: “Our multipronged VM 2026 strategy provides a comprehensive framework to boost Malaysia’s visibility, enhance destination accessibility and elevate our tourism offerings. Through focused efforts and strategic collaborations, we are confident of achieving our yearly arrivals and target receipts in the run-up to VM 2026.”

Sarawak recruits tourism ambassadors

KUCHING, 3 May 2024: Sarawak is taking a monumental leap forward in its tourism endeavours by launching the ‘Sarawak Tourism Ambassador – Embrace and Act Tourism’ Programme.

The innovative initiative, unveiled by Deputy Minister for Tourism, YB Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, encapsulates the essence of patriotism and community engagement in promoting Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage and natural wonders to the world.

Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) CEO Sharzede Datu Hj Salleh Askor said: “The responsibility of promoting tourism involves all citizens – corporates and individuals.” Emphasising inclusivity, the CEO highlighted the programme’s continuous journey towards raising awareness and bolstering the tourism sector through community involvement.

The ambassadors programme solidifies Sarawak’s tourism essence to ensure every visitor has an unforgettable experience. Through continuously enhancing tourism offerings and a culture of shared responsibility, Sarawak has established itself as the premier Gateway to the Captivating Wonders of Borneo. Sarawak continues to spotlight the state’s distinctive tourism drivers – its rich culture, thrilling adventures, breathtaking nature, delectable cuisine, and vibrant festivals—all topped with legendary hospitality.

The groundbreaking programme aims to reignite the passion for tourism within Sarawak Civil Service, recognising civil service as invaluable ambassadors for Sarawak’s tourism sector. The Minister’s speech underscored civil service’s pivotal role in driving economic development, cultural preservation, and fostering sustainable growth through their advocacy and engagement with communities, poised to become catalysts for change, embodying Sarawak’s spirit of hospitality and excellence in service.

“In the second phase of this programme, we aim to target 1,500 participants from the Sarawak Civil Service, spanning from May to October 2024. Under the theme ‘Embrace and Act Tourism’, we aim to instil a sense of ownership among Sarawak Civil Service members on the state’s tourism attractions. We strongly encourage our Sarawak Civil Service to see themselves as custodians of our state’s development, entrusted with promoting tourism,” Sharzede added.

As part of Sarawak’s robust tourism strategy, this programme aims to elevate the sector to contribute towards Sarawak’s overall target of 4 million visitors this year. In 2023, the industry witnessed a remarkable resurgence, with a staggering 93.82% growth compared to 2022. Tourism receipts surged to RM9.99 billion, reflecting a resilient and adaptable industry post-pandemic. Sarawak’s tourism performance in the first quarter of 2024 is also encouraging, recording a total of 1.18 million visitor arrivals from January to March 2024, with RM3.07 billion tourism receipts, with a growth of 31.2% in the same corresponding period in 2023.

The Ambassador Programme is a crucial strategy to promote Sarawak’s world-renowned Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2024, slated for 28 to 30 June under the theme ‘Evolution.’ Targeting over 25,000 visitors, RWMF2024 continues its commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism.

Since 2011, STB has been dedicated to Responsible Tourism, environmental preservation, and community support, as evidenced by initiatives like waste management and energy conservation, which align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Ambassadors are called upon to lead the charge in championing Responsible Tourism and ensuring a sustainable future for Sarawak’s tourism, primarily through the promotion of RWMF.

The programme’s online learning platform, developed in collaboration with Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, underscored Sarawak’s commitment to digitalisation, innovation, and accessibility. By equipping participants with comprehensive knowledge and insights into Sarawak’s tourism destinations, the programme aims to nurture a legion of ambassadors dedicated to promoting Sarawak’s tourism offerings with pride and authenticity.

STB’s dedication to innovation and inclusivity shone through with the expansion of the Ambassadorship Programme to the Sarawak Civil Service, building on the success of the previous phase, a collaboration with e-hailing drivers. The inaugural programme had 1,000 participants who achieved a perfect 100% score in the Sarawak Ambassadors Programme on e-learning, comprising e-hailing Drivers and Sarawak Tourist Guides Association (SkTGA) members, as well as reaching almost 700 participants of Public Tourist Guides through PUSTAKA’s e-Pandei,

Sarawak serves up pickleball contest

KUCHING Sarawak, Malaysia, 2 May 2024: Sarawak is about to make pickleball history with the #BorneoPickleball International Tournament, Malaysia and Borneo’s largest pickleball competition with a prize pool of MYR20,000.

The tournament will be held in Kuching from 9 to 12 October, and approximately 500 players and 2,000 visitors from the region are expected to participate.

The International Tournament is endorsed by the Malaysian and Sarawak Pickleball Associations at the Association level. At the Government level, it is endorsed by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak and the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak.

Pickleball is inclusive across all ages and abilities, fostering interaction among diverse industries and communities. The tournament is open to corporate organisations, public sectors, associations and clubs, and other communities and individuals interested in joining.

The Honourable Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak and Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak, commenting on the tournament at a recent media event said: “The International Tournament is relevant for Sarawak to strengthen its destination profile in sports and sports tourism. As the Exclusive Strategic Advisor, BESarawak’s contribution is to guide the Kuching Pickleball Association in developing a sporting event that can be sustained. According to Dato Sri Abang Haji Abdul Karim bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Chairman of BESarawak, “it can be a recurring event and transformed into a potential legacy for the pickleball community and Sarawak’s sports tourism.

“The tournament’s outreach goes beyond the competition itself as the Kuching Pickleball Association partners with us to include the ‘Books Build Legacy’ corporate social responsibility programme with a target of 2,000 book donations in aid of Sarawak’s rural schools.

“Community development is always a priority for us in the industry, and the tournament is a product of collaboration between business event players uniting for change. This is our contribution to developing Associations and major events.”

Accessibility: It’s a relatively easy sport to learn and doesn’t require a lot of physical strain, making it appealing for people with varying fitness levels.

Today, the International Federation of Pickleball boasts 70 member countries, with Malaysia joining as an Associated Member in November 2019.

According to a report by the Association of Pickleball Professionals, more than 36.5 million people play pickleball, and participation in tournaments and leagues worldwide is growing.

Pickleball gains ground in Malaysia
