Thai Lion serves up China charters

BANGKOK, 5 October 2017: Thai Lion Air is adding more flights to China, but they  are not open for bookings here in Thailand.

The flights are technically scheduled charters; cheap deals for Chinese tour operators who bulk-purchase seat allotments at below market fares. They  are  bundled into holiday packages sold to Chinese tourists through retail travel and online outlets.

For the airline, which has poor aircraft utilisation, offering them to Chinese tour operators keeps planes in the air earning revenue. Read more

Nok boosts network with charters

BANGKOK, 3 October 2017: Nok Air has started flight operations from U-tapao airport, 30 km south of Pattaya resort.

The low-cost airline marked the first flight from the airport with a celebratory water spray arch to welcome the aircraft that flew from Nanchang.

The airline is contracted to offer four weekly charter flights from Nanchang, China, that arrive at 1600 at U-tapao International Airport. Read more

Russian airline nosedives

MOSCOW, 27 September 2017: Tens of thousands of passengers were stranded Tuesday as Russia’s 10th largest carrier, VIM-AVIA, cancelled dozens of flights due to heavy losses and tour operators called on the government to avert an industry-wide crisis.

The private airline, which has cancelled all of its charter flights, said it was planning to go into a receivership due to financial hardship.

“Unfortunately we have to admit that the VIM-AVIA company has found itself in a difficult economic situation,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday. Read more

Malindo starts Sabah charters

KOTA KINABALU, 7 July 2017: Malindo Air will introduce 10 direct flights weekly from China to Sabah during the summer months, a peak travel period for Chinese travellers.

Initially, the Kuala Lumpur-based airlines will operate charter flights, with all seats pre-sold to consortiums of Chinese tour operators who distribute low-priced inclusive holidays through retail travel channels.

However, the objective is to convince the airline ultimately to upgrade the charters to scheduled services. Read more

Laos targets more international flights

VIENTIANE, 17 January 2017: Lao PDR’s Department of Civil Aviation says its priority is to encourage more international airlines to serve the capital Vientiane.

In an interview with Vientiane Times the department claimed there were more direct flights to Laos, many of them charter flights during the peak tourist season November to April.

Flights from China are on the increase. Previously, only China Eastern Airlines operated flights, but now Sichuan Airlines and Hainan Airlines, both serve the country direct from China. Read more

China starts flights to Paracels

BEIJING, 23 December 2016: China began daily civilian charter flights to Woody Island in the contested South China Sea, Thursday, the official Xinhua news agency said, in a move likely to raise regional tensions.

Beijing asserts sovereignty over almost all of the strategically vital South China Sea despite rival claims from Southeast Asian neighbours and has rapidly built reefs into artificial islands capable of hosting military planes.

It landed its first charter passenger plane in Sansha city on Woody Island in the contested Paracels chain, where Vietnam and Taiwan each have rival claims. Read more

TUI packages Phu Quoc holidays

KIEN GIANG, 8 November 2016: TUI Nordic, a  tour operator and charter airline based in Stockholm, Sweden, plans to launch nonstop flights to Phu Quoc island, in December.

Local media reported the airline’s maiden flight to Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island located close to Cambodia will depart Sweden, 18 December, using a Boeing Dreamliner.

TUI Nordic will pre-sell seats as part of a tour packages for the weekly flight through to 2 April 2017. Read more

Sarawak woos China charters

SINGAPORE, 1 November 2016: The Sarawak Tourism Board reported, during last month’s ITB Asia, its success in attracting more charter flights to Sarawak, this December through to early 2017.

Commenting on progress to improve airline links to Sarawak, the tourism board told TTR Weekly during an interview at ITB Asia, that Malaysia Airlines plans a series of Chinese New Year charter flights, 27 January from Taiwan.

The flights will accommodate groups  booked by leading tour operators. The flights have a capacity of 162 seats. Read more

Euro airline eyes Cambodian base

PHNOM PENH, 22 September 2016: Small Planet Airlines, a Lithuanian leisure airline, is seeking approval from Cambodia’s civil aviation department to operate flights out of the country to South Korea and China.

Phnom Penh Post reported the independent leisure airline, which already has an air operator’s certificates (AOC) in Lithuania, Poland and Germany, is looking to expand its operations in Asia to offset the seasonal slowdown in Europe.

State Secretariat of Civil Aviation official, Khim Sophorn, was quoted saying that Small Planet had requested an AOC from the government which  was still under review. Read more

SilkAir to fly charters to Okinawa

SINGAPORE, 9 September 2016: SilkAir will fly 12 direct SilkAir charter flights between Singapore and Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture, between November  and January 2017.

The charters are part of an ongoing joint effort to promote a direct Singapore-Okinawa air link in cooperation with the Okinawa Prefecture Government.

Nine travel agencies in Singapore have been assigned by the airline to sell packages for the charter series. Read more
