Sabah hosts top dive summit

SINGAPORE, 4 April 2023: Sabah will host this year’s ADEX Ocean Partnership Summit, further solidifying the state’s reputation as a prominent meeting, incentive, convention, and exhibition (MICE) destination for promoting marine conservation initiatives and sustainable diving tourism.

Summit details were released during the Asian Dive Expo (ADEX) hosted at Singapore’s Sands Expo and Convention Centre from 31 March to 2 April.

Sabah Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment cum Chairman of Sabah Tourism Board Datuk Joniston Bangkuai attended the opening of ADEX Singapore. Also, he officially launched the ADEX Sabah Ocean Partnership Summit 2023.

Present were ADEX chief executive officer John Thet; Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer Noredah Othman; Malaysia dive icon and ADEX diving ambassador Clement Lee; and ADEX Sabah team head Theresa Tham.

Organised in partnership with the Sabah Tourism Board, the summit will be held at the Sabah International Convention Centre from 18 to 20 August.

“Sabah is already a popular diving destination, and we are committed to conserving and preserving our marine ecosystem. This exciting event will support the Sabah government’s ongoing initiatives in ocean conservation and sustainable development,” said Joniston.

Joniston (3rd left) is launching the ADEX Sabah Ocean Partnership Summit 2023. With him were ADEX chief executive officer John Thet (left); Sabah Tourism Board chief executive officer Noredah Othman (4th left); and ADEX diving ambassador Clement Lee (centre).

“The state government has put in place a range of initiatives to protect the marine environment, including marine parks and sanctuaries, strict regulations on fishing and diving, and education programmes to raise awareness about marine conservation.

“We look forward to welcoming the global ocean community, renowned speakers, professional diving fraternity and attendees, in general, to build a network while sharing ideas and knowledge on the best practice adaptation for the ocean,” he said, adding the event will bolster the state’s diving industry.

While actively pushing Sabah as a preferred travel destination, Joniston said that Sabah Tourism is also shifting its focus to promoting specialised and high-end tourism activities, including scuba diving, given that the state has a strong network of professional dive operators offering world-class diving services.

He also mentioned Sabah’s capacity for hosting significant events. He expressed confidence that Sabah could ultimately host its very own dive expo because many divers consider Sabah to be a must-dive spot.

Additionally, he said the ADEX Sabah Ocean Partnership Summit provides an excellent platform to showcase Sabah’s rich marine biodiversity and cultural diversity, giving visitors a chance to experience local culture and cuisine while taking advantage of diving opportunities.

Based on statistics, Sabah recorded 61,796 divers in 2022, bringing in an estimated RM222.8 million in revenue. The figure comprises 6,411 international divers and 55,384 domestic divers.

In 2019, Sabah registered 130,604 international and 7,145 domestic divers, earning tourism-related revenue of MYR21 million.

AirAsia will start Jakarta-Perth flights

PERTH, 4 April 2023: Indonesia AirAsia confirms it will start flying from Jakarta to Perth for the first time, on 2 June 2023.

Fares on this inaugural route are now on sale, starting from AUD179 (ex-Perth) or IDR1,299,000. (ex-Jakarta)

From left to right: Carolyn Turnbull, Tourism Western Australia Managing Director, Veranita Yosephine, Indonesia AirAsia CEO, Hon Roger Cook MLA, Deputy Premier and Minister of Tourism Western Australia, Listiana Operananta, Counsel General of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Mohammad Rizal Pahlevi, Commercial and Services Director of PT Angkasa Pura II Indonesia Airport and Kate Holsgrove, Acting CEO of Perth Airport, in a photo session during the launch of Indonesia AirAsia Jakarta-Perth route.

Supported by the Western Australian Government through Tourism Western Australia (TWA) and the Perth Airport, the direct service will initially operate four times a week, delivering over 1,400 visitor seats weekly through Perth and Jakarta Airports, with plans to grow in line with demand. The new route was introduced last week during an event in Perth, Australia, attended by representatives from the TWA, Perth Airport, Indonesia AirAsia and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia.

Two-way travel between Indonesia and Australia has always been prevalent for several reasons, including the convenient flight time and appeal of both destinations for shopping, dining, adventure, beaches, and education. According to the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, the number of Indonesian students in Australia this year alone has already reached more than 20,000, an increase from 15,000 in 2022.

Indonesia AirAsia CEO, Veranita Yosephine, expressed her optimism concerning the new route: “We foresee the new Jakarta – Perth route will be very popular for leisure travellers wanting to see more of Indonesia and for the more than 270 million Indonesians (more than 10 million residents in Jakarta alone) wishing to visit Perth and West Australia for business, leisure, studying and visiting friends and family.

The new route from Jakarta to Perth will use an A320 aircraft with 180 seats flying the route four times weekly. Flight time is 4.5 hours.

Indonesia AirAsia already offers three daily flights between Perth and Bali due to soaring demand delivering over 7,000 visitor seats weekly through Perth and Denpasar airports alone. While starting with four weekly services from Jakarta, providing over 1,400 visitor seats weekly through Perth Airport (or over 700 to West Australia), the airline will review opportunities to expand these services in the future based on demand.
