BANGKOK, 27 December 2017: Always playing second fiddle to Pattaya, nearby Bangsaen beach is now hosting a half-marathon that  organisers claim will soon be named the best in Asia.

A tall order for a resort that’s main claim to fame is its location being the closest beach resort to Bangkok on the eastern seaboard of Chol Buri province.

The race held annually on or close to 17 December has applied for the IAAF’s Bronze Label Road Race standard. Read more

Runners brave Delhi smog

NEW DELHI, 20 November 2017: Tens of thousands of runners Sunday braved the smog for the Delhi half marathon, ignoring health warnings from doctors who fought for the race to be postponed.

More than 30,000 people, some sporting pollution masks, braved a hazy morning to run through the Indian capital despite almost two weeks of hazardous smog that forced schools shut for several days.

The US embassy website, Sunday, showed levels of the smallest and most harmful airborne pollutants hovered near 200 — eight times the World Health Organization’s safe maximum — for the duration of the 13.1 mile (21 km) race. Read more

BANGKOK, 19 September 2017: After 19 years, Malaysia farewells the Formula 1 series later this month, while neighbour Singapore has signed a new contract to keep its famous F1 night race roaring for another five years.

Hosting mega sports events are the Holy Grail for nations keen to create awareness and boost tourism earnings.

Malaysia lowered the curtain on its F1 Grand Prix claiming it was no longer cost effective. Singapore after several rounds of negotiations secured a financial package that should give it bottom-line benefits for the next five year. Read more

Myanmar hill town hosts trail run

YANGON, 31 August 2017: Myanmar’s third annual MyWorld Kalaw Trail Run has opened for registration.

The event, featuring a trail half-marathon (21km) and a 12 km trail run, will offer scenic races through beautiful forests surrounding Kalaw, a hilltop-town 30 km from Inle Lake.

The event is scheduled for Sunday, December 10, 2017. Read more

PHUKET, 11 August 2017: Sporting events are a key catalyst for Phuket’s MICE demand, with the industry valued at THB5.74 billion, C9 Hotelworks says its latest Phuket MICE Market Update released Thursday.

With Thailand being ranked as the top MICE destination among ASEAN countries in 2016, Phuket is one of the major contributors with 202,555 visitors.

Last year, the domestic sector was the key feeder of MICE travellers, which accounted for 70% of total demand on the island. Read more

Pattaya marathon reboots

PATTAYA, 7 August 2017: Pattaya City joins hands with Provincial Chonburi Administrative Organisation, Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Athletic Association of Thailand to organise the 26th Pattaya Marathon 2017, 3 September.

The event was supposed to take place 16 July, but Pattaya City could not secure core sponsors and an organiser in time, according to the Pattaya Marathon website.

It has now been rescheduled for Sunday, 3 September, with the start and finish line on Pattaya Beach Road. Read more

Bangsaen to host marathon

CHONBURI, 12 July 2017: MICE & Communication joins hands with Chonburi’s Saensuk Municipality to organise the “Bangsaen42 Marathon” 19 November, at Bangsaen beach, Chonburi.

The event organiser MICE & Communication’s managing director, Rut Jiroajvanichakorn, said the “Bangsaen42 Marathon” will attract both Thai and international runners.

MICE aims for the event to be certified as an Association of Athletics Federations’ Gold Label Road Race by 2022 and to raise  awareness in line with Asia’s top marathons. Read more

BANGKOK, 26 June 2017: Tourism Authority of Thailand is grouping events and activities into four categories to open up travel to secondary destinations and improve travel options during the rainy season.

TAT said it will concentrate on promoting food & music festivals; cultural & art festivals; creative events and recreation & sports events.

This July, activities start with the Kaeng Song Coffee Sipping and Khek River Rafting Festival to be held 1 July to 31 October at the Khek River. Read more

Runners beat Phuket Marathon record

PHUKET, 9 June 2017: The 12th Laguna Phuket Marathon welcomed almost 7,000 runners for a record-breaking event at Thailand most popular holiday island.

The sixth consecutive increase in participant turnout saw more than 50 countries taking part this year in what has become Southeast Asia’s leading destination marathon and Phuket’s largest annual sports event.

Organised by Go Adventure Asia and hosted by Laguna Phuket, the race course is famous for its beauty, taking runners along quiet lanes, through Sirinat National Park and along Bang Tao beachfront before returning to Laguna Phuket and the finish line. Read more

Race for flood hit farmers

PHATTHALUNG, 8 June 2017: Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports joins hands with Phatthalung province to organise the Thale-Noi Roi Run marathon 23 July in Phatthalung  to promote sports tourism.

The activity is expected to draw around 2,000 participants, who will run along the country’s longest bridge connecting Khuan Khanun district in Phatthalung to Ranot district in Songkhla province.

The campaign is part of a project aimed at developing sports and food tourism, as well as generating income for flood-hit farmers and residents. Read more
