Emirates boosts flights to South Africa

DUBAI, UAE, 29 September 2022: Emirates will bring new travel opportunities, choices and convenience for customers travelling to and from South Africa with additional services to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

The ramp-up of flights is part of the airline’s ongoing commitment to support South Africa’s economic and tourism recovery through enhanced connectivity across all gateways. The airline’s latest move also reaffirms South Africa’s strategic importance on its network, prioritising service expansion and rebuilding its capacity to unlock further growth potential.

The airline will expand its schedule to and from Johannesburg with three daily flights from 1 March 2023. Cape Town will be served with double daily services starting from 1 February 2023. Emirates will also be adding two more flights to Durban, making it a daily operation from 1 December 2022. Reintroducing the new flights between Dubai and the airline’s three gateways in South Africa will enhance Emirates’ schedule to 42 weekly services.

Emirates’ flight EK 767 from Dubai to Johannesburg will operate with a Boeing 777 aircraft, complementing its double daily A380 operation. The flight will depart at 2325, arriving at 0535 the next day to Johannesburg. The return flight will depart Johannesburg at 2220 and arrives in Dubai at 0820 the next morning. The third daily flight from Johannesburg will help meet high demand with more than 300 available seats each way. It will offer additional flexibility for South African travellers with a new evening departure* for easier connectivity to Europe, the Americas, West Asia and Far East via Dubai.

Emirates’ second daily service to Cape Town will depart Dubai at 0910, landing at 1645. It will then depart Cape Town at 1325, arriving in Dubai at 0110 the next day. With the double daily service to Cape Town, the airline will have restored its pre-pandemic schedule, supporting the city’s tourism industry right during peak season arrivals by providing convenient connectivity from key source markets such as Europe, the Middle East, West Asia and Australasia. As part of its longstanding commitment to supporting tourism recovery efforts in South Africa, Emirates and the South African Tourism Board signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier this year to jointly promote tourism and boost visitor arrivals to South Africa across the airline’s network of over 130 passenger destinations.

The additional services to all three gateways will also benefit customers with more connecting choices to an array of domestic and regional cities across Southern Africa via Emirates’ codeshare and interline partners, including South African Airways, Airlink, FlySafair and Cemair. The unique connections and onward travel options are not offered by any other airline.

Tickets can be booked on emirates.com, the Emirates App, or via both online and offline travel agents.

Emirates has been serving South Africa for 27 years and has connected over 20 million travellers to and from South Africa via Dubai and beyond to its global network, firmly establishing the airline as a long-term partner of South African aviation, tourism, and trade.

IATA lists priorities at ICAO assembly

MONTREAL, Canada, 29 September 2022: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) urged the 41st Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to address core aviation industry issues.

Net zero emissions

Agreeing on a long-term aspirational goal for the decarbonisation of international aviation in line with the aviation industry’s commitment to achieving net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

Carbon offsetting

Strengthening the landmark Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as the single economic measure used by governments to manage aviation’s carbon footprint

Learning lessons from Covid-19

Implementing lessons learned from the economically and socially painful destruction of global connectivity that resulted from government attempts to control the spread of Covid-19

“The industry’s expectations for the 41st ICAO Assembly are ambitious but realistic given our challenges. For example, governments must learn the lessons of Covid-19 so that the next pandemic does not result in closed borders bringing social and economic hardship. We also need governments to support the industry’s commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 with their commitment and corresponding policy measures on decarbonisation. The right decisions by governments can accelerate the recovery from Covid-19 and strengthen the foundations for aviation’s decarbonisation,” said IATA’s director general Willie Walsh

IATA submitted or sponsored over 20 papers on the Assembly’s agenda covering key policy and regulatory areas.

Sustainability: Airlines are committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. To support this commitment, IATA asks governments to adopt a LTAG of equal ambition that can guide consistent policymaking globally.

Furthermore, IATA urges governments to strengthen CORSIA as the single global economic measure to manage aviation’s international emissions. This means avoiding new taxes or emissions pricing schemes; and eliminating the plethora of duplicative measures that has evolved in recent years.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel: SAF is at the core of aviation’s energy transition and is expected to deliver some 65% of carbon mitigation by 2050. IATA calls on governments for coordinated policy measures to incentivise production. IATA wants to establish a global “book and claim” system to enable airlines’ most efficient uptake of SAF.

Lessons Learned from Covid-19: IATA calls on governments to be better prepared for future health emergencies and to avoid the fragmented response to Covid-19. Where Covid-19 measures are still in place, these must be reviewed considering lessons learned during Covid-19 and evaluated against global best practices.

The challenge is to review the ICAO CART recommendations, which supported the restoration of global connectivity based on deep scientific knowledge and understanding built-up during the Covid-19 pandemic. This should enable a pandemic preparedness framework that avoids border closures with an approach featuring more proportionate and transparent risk management measures, common standards for health credentials, and better communication—including a common platform for sharing data on government measures.

Strengthened cooperation and dialogue are needed at global, regional and national levels. IATA calls for leadership from ICAO and the World Health Organisation (WHO), including a central role for the CAPSCA framework based on an ongoing and monitored work program. This should lead to a crisis response toolkit that can be activated as required and includes health authorities and industry stakeholders.

Safety, Security and Operations: IATA supports an obligation for states to consider aviation safety issues and consult industry experts when enabling new services such as 5G.

IATA calls for states to support faster standard-setting practices at ICAO and a phased approach to implementing ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs). This will help SARPs keep pace with technological developments while avoiding the confusion created when there are delays due to the complexities of testing, certification and supply chain challenges.

Data: A patchwork of laws has evolved globally for personal data collection, use, transmission and retention. These can be contradictory when airlines operate international services. IATA calls on governments to work through ICAO to bring consistency and predictability to data laws applicable to international air transport.

Global Standards and Implementation

“Global standards are at the core of a safe, efficient, and sustainable air transport industry. This ICAO Assembly has enormous opportunities to advance aviation’s decarbonisation, prepare the industry for the next pandemic, advance gender diversity, improve accessible air travel and enable the standard setting to keep pace with technology. We look forward to states rising to these and other challenges before the Assembly,” said Walsh.

“Agreement, however, is only half the solution. Decisions made at the Assembly need to be implemented. The fact that we had a multitude of environment taxes when CORSIA was agreed to be the single global economic measure to manage international emissions illustrates the importance of effective implementation.”

Star Alliance reclaims Skytrax award

SINGAPORE, 29 September 2022: Star Alliance reclaimed the title of World’s Best Airline Alliance at the Skytrax 2022 World Airline Awards, last week.

The Alliance’s Los Angeles lounge has also retained the World’s Best Airline Alliance Lounge award for the sixth year running.

Star Alliance CEO Jeffrey Goh commented on the win: “We are elated to learn that millions of flyers worldwide have again put their trust in Star Alliance and have recognised the exceptional value the alliance offers through their journey. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary this year, the recognition means even more to us.”

Recently Star Alliance extended its network with the Intermodal Partnership model, which intelligently combines air travel with other transport ecosystems. Launched last July with the German rail network, Deutsche Bahn, passengers can book combined air and rail journeys on a single ticket.

Skytrax World Airline Awards are independent and impartial awards decided through international customer voting. Passengers of over 100 nationalities participated in the 2022 survey, with 14.32 million eligible entries in the results. The survey was also provided in six major international languages.

Back in 2005, when the World’s Best Airline Alliance category was introduced, Star Alliance was the first alliance to achieve the title, winning it multiple times in the following years. More recently, it held the top position for four consecutive years, from 2016 to 2019. The awards paused in 2020 due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Thai Vietjet expands booking options

SINGAPORE, 29  September 2022: Thai Vietjet today announced Wednesday the launch of a new virtual interline service developed in partnership with technology provider Dohop.

The platform allows Thai Vietjet passengers to purchase airline tickets to global destinations in one seamless transaction and combines Thai Vietjet flights with ticketing on partner airlines.

Dohop’s API-based technology will provide Thai Vietjet with a network of carriers, such as the Singapore-based Scoot, that can be ticketed simultaneously for onward connecting services via the Bangkok hub and other connecting airports. It enables passengers to book tickets to select destinations, including ancillary services such as checked baggage, in-flight services, and upgrades via a streamlined booking process.

Dohop automatically generates the best options and fares for Thai Vietjet customers based on their departure and arrival at airports. Dohop services the connection in case of delays and disruptions, while Thai Vietjet retains customer ownership.

Currently, Thai Vietjet passengers can fly to various global destinations via Thai Vietjet’s Bangkok base with a flight connection with Scoot. Further network expansion is planned, with Thai Vietjet adding different carrier networks to the booking platform soon.

“We are excited to announce our collaboration with Dohop, providing international passengers with more flexible travel options across the Asia-Pacific region. With the collaboration between both parties, Thai Vietjet will be able to provide its passengers with a convenient connection to numerous destinations around the world via its Bangkok base, as we are expanding our flight connection with more carriers,” said Thai Vietjet’s director of commercial Pinyot Pibulsonggram.

“We are thrilled to be expanding our presence in Southeast Asia. Working with an innovative and forward-thinking airline such as Thai Vietjet further underlines the necessity for alternative interline solutions in global markets. As we head into the latter half of 2022, we look forward to further collaborating with Thai Vietjet, expanding their service, and providing new commercial opportunities,” commented Dohop commercial director Sarah Hanan.

Air Canada welcomes end of Covid restrictions

MONTREAL, 28 September 2022: Air Canada welcomed the Government of Canada’s decision earlier this week to lift remaining Covid-19 restrictions, including requirements for wearing masks on aircraft, testing and quarantine, and the compulsory use of ArriveCan starting 1 October 2022.

“Air Canada welcomes the removal of these restrictions, acknowledging that air travel is safe and that the measures were not justified by science,” said Air Canada executive vice-president and chief operating officer Craig Landry.

“We believe it will greatly facilitate travel, help to continue stabilising the country’s air transport sector and support Canada’s economy. Customers and crew will still have the option to wear masks, and we also encourage customers to monitor their health to be sure they feel well and fit to travel,”

“While Tuesday’s announcement is a positive step, we urge the government not to lose momentum. Lessons learned during the pandemic should now be applied to streamlining the air transport system in Canada and enact further reforms.

“This includes improving processes, such as security and customs at airports, developing trusted traveller programs, deploying new technologies and, more fundamentally, re-examining the user-pay model that finances air transportation in Canada, as weaknesses and interdependencies were exposed by Covid.”
