Surprise backer for UNWTO candidate

BANGKOK, 12 April 2017: Travel trade media rarely endorses candidates vying for top level tourism appointments, but TravelIndex founder and director, Bernard Metzger, made an exception, Tuesday, by backing a candidate from the Seychelles to take over as the new secretary general of UNWTO.

Metzer heaped abundant praise on Alain St Ange, the candidate from the Seychelles, one of seven contesting the May elections to head the UNWTO. Other candidates hail from Armenia, Brazil, Columbia, Georgia, South Korea and Zimbabwe.

In his letter posted to a global readership of travel executives, Metzger said of the Seychelles hopeful, who has headed Seychelles tourism and held ministerial posts: “I am one of your greatest supporters and few in your position have achieved so much for world tourism.” Read more

Sabre names VP airlines

SINGAPORE, 12 April 2017: Sabre Corporation has appointed Rakesh Narayanan vice president of supplier commerce, Asia Pacific, for Sabre Travel Network, its B2B travel marketplace business.

Reporting to Sabre Travel Network senior vice president of airline commerce, Chris Wilding, Narayanan will lead commercial activities serving Sabre’s Asia Pacific airline customers. Read more

India extends eVisa role

NEW DELHI, 5 April 2017: India has liberalised and extended the scope of its eVisa scheme effective 1 April in a move to boost tourism to the country.

The popular eVisa, is now available in three distinct categories specifically for leisure, business and medical travel, India’s Press Information Bureau announced last week.

The e-Tourist, e-Business visa and e-Medical visas have also been extended to 161 countries for entry through 24 gateway airports, up from 16 airports earlier and three Indian sea ports; Cochin, Goa and Mangalore to tap cruise tourism potential. Read more

Drawing from more than 27 years of experience in the hotel industry, Didit will be responsible for running the family resort and the overall, day-to-day operations.

PATA bullish on Asia Pacific travel

BANGKOK, 4 April 2017: Collective foreign tourist arrivals to 39 Asia Pacific destinations will grow by 5.9% over 2016 and add around 35 million additional foreign arrivals in 2017, according to Pacific Asia Travel Association’s latest forecast for the Asia Pacific visitor economy.

Bundled into a comprehensive data package for members under its PATAmPOWER brand, PATA released, Monday, highlights of the arrival trends for 2017 to 2021.

It estimates that during 2017 to 2021, foreign arrivals into the Asia Pacific region will grow at an average rate of 5% per annum, reaching a combined foreign inbound count of close to 758 million trips. Read more

Booking.com rebuffs block

BANGKOK, 4 April 2017: Booking.com is filing an appeal against a Turkish court injunction that blocked the popular travel website in Turkey.

In a statement to TTR Weekly, Monday, Booking.com said the court blocked the site’s domestic bookings in Turkey.

“We disagree with the injunction and are in the process of filing an appeal. However, Booking.com always abides by local law,” the statement read. Read more

Vietnam’s March tourism positive

HANOI, 4 April 2017: Vietnam National Administration of Tourism estimates the country welcomed 1,005,821 international visitors in March representing an increase of 21.1% over the same month last year.

China was the top supply market with 297,915 visits improving 39.2%. Other top performers were South Korea, Japan, Russia and the United States.

Thailand in ninth place generated 24,371 visits up 4.5% over the same month last year. Read more

Halong bay raises fees

QUANG NINH, 4 April 2017: Quang Ninh has set new sightseeing fees for Halong Bay effective 1 April.

Local media reported that new fees for sightseeing routes in Halong and Bai Tu Long Bays will range from VND200,000 to VND250,000 (USD9 to USD11) per route.

Previously, visitors paid an entrance fee of VND120,000 (USD5.27) and additional fees for each single site they visited, ranging from VND30,000 to VND50,000 (USD1.32 to USD2.2) per one site. Read more

Tripfez founder face of the future

BANGKOK, 31 March 2017: Co-Founder and CEO of a travel booking engine for Muslim travellers, Faeez Fadhlillah, was named the 2017 PATA Face of the Future on Thursday.

Based in Malaysia, he and his co partner, Juergen Gallistl, founded Tripfez in 2013, but the travel portal’s big moment came when it won  USD750,000 in seed funding in May last year to expand he business.

Today it has over 200,000 properties on its site, worldwide, of which 20,000 are “Salam Standard certified”. Read more
