PATA to campaign for gender equality

BANGKOK, 13 December 2017: Pacific Asia Travel Association will advocate for better gender equality in the travel and tourism industry in 2018.

The decision is in line with United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal Five, that calls for gender equality in travel.

PATA chairperson Sarah Mathews made the  announcement recently stating that while the world has achieved progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment under the Millennium Development Goals, women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world. Khiri Travel reshuffles management

BANGKOK, 1 December 2017: Khiri Travel has announced internal management changes affecting its operations in Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.

Effective today, Stefan Scheerer, assistant general manager at Khiri Travel Myanmar, will move to Vientiane, where he will become general manager of Khiri Travel Laos.

He has been with Khiri Travel for two years. In that time he has risen through the ranks from customer care manager in Myanmar to assistant general manager to general manager for Laos. Read more

ONYX names EVP operations

BANGKOK, 30 November 2017: ONYX Hospitality Group has appointed Craig Bond as executive vice president of operations.

Bond joins ONYX from Oakwood Asia-Pacific where he held the role of vice president of operations, overseeing the group’s portfolio across the region as well as supporting the opening pipeline.

Prior to joining Oakwood, he worked for Pan Pacific Hotels, Mirvac and Saville Hotel Group across Australia and the Oceania regions. Read more

Ani Villas names GM

ANGUILLA, 27 November 2017: John Vasatka will take over as CEO this month for the Ani Villas’ collection of private resorts in Anguilla, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

He will also head the management of a fourth property due to open later this month in the Dominican Republic.

Vasatka has worked with upscale hotels for nearly two decades, including 12 years as general manager at various Aman Resorts’ in the Caribbean, the Middle East, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Read more

A former minister returns to Thai tourism

BANGKOK: 27 November 2017:  Thailand’s Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, completed a major Cabinet reshuffle, 24 November, that saw Minister of Tourism and Sports, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, step down from the post after three years.

Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau chairman, Weersak Kowsuat, a former minister of tourism and sports in 2008 and chair of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, replaces Kobkarn.

Commenting on her Facebook page, Kobkarn described her ministerial term as “three valuable years to serve the nation, together with all government agencies, the private sector, especially the younger generation.” Read more

Radisson Blu names Hua Hin GM

HUA HIN, Thailand, 23 November 2017:  Radisson Blu Resort Hua Hin has named Richard Mehr as general manager, effective last week.

Mehr worked in Hua Hin previously when he opened and managed two properties between 2006 and 2013.

He was also the president of the Hua Hin & Cha-Am Skal Club from 2010 to 2013. Read more

Bhaya names GM for Halong cruises

HANOI, 23 November 2017: Bhaya Group, an overnight cruise operator in the Halong Bay, northern Vietnam, has named Andrej Stein as its general manager.

He takes over the cruise operations with immediate effect.

In this role, he will be responsible for managing the group’s 19 cruise vessels that are home-based at Halong Bay. Read more

Bangkok Kempinski names manager

BANGKOK, 16 November 2017 – Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok has hired  Andreas Johan Magnus as its hotel manager.

He relocated from Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Centre in China where he held the position of  hotel manager since 2015.

A Norwegian national, he began his hotel career in his home country before moving to the US.   He worked for the Orient Express Hotels, New Orleans, and then later transferred to Belmond Grand Hotel Europa in St. Petersburg, Russia. Read more

Ex TUI chief hired by Easyjet

LONDON, 13 November 2017: British low-cost airline EasyJet has named Johan Lundgren, the Swedish former deputy of TUI travel group, as its new chief executive, it said Friday.

Lundgren will become CEO on 1 December, taking the reins from Carolyn McCall, EasyJet said in a statement.

“I have flown with and been a fan of EasyJet and its wonderful people for many years,” Lundgren commented. “This is an exciting time to be joining Europe’s leading airline.” Read more
