Agog with gorgeous Penang

BANGKOK, 9 April 2018: ‘Gorgeous Penang,’ or in the local lingo ‘Penang Cun,’ is the latest tourism campaign to give the island’s tourism a boost.

Tourism officials at the weekend said they hope the four-year campaign will raise Penang’s profile as a heritage, art and cultural destination.

To last four years and inspire next-gen travellers might be a big ask for the “Gorgeous Penang” campaign, which echoes popular taglines from the 1990s.

For example the “Amazing Thailand” branding was introduced in 1998.

Critics might say the tagline lacks a WOW factor for today’s travellers who are seeking immersive experiences.  ‘Gorgeous’ hardly describes the island’s world heritage architecture, food culture and traditions linked to Penang’s maritime history.

Penang Global Tourism will organise road shows to present the ‘Gorgeous Penang’ message in Vietnam and Indonesia this August.

AirAsia will launch direct flight between Penang and Hanoi in Vietnam this July.
