ITB Asia revives its in-person show

SINGAPORE, 25 October 2022: The 15th edition of ITB Asia closed on a high note last Friday, with the show owner Messe Berlin claiming 27,000 business appointments and meetings unfolded over three days.

It sounds impressive but anecdotal evidence via delegate videos and social media comments suggested footfall was off the pace compared to the last “all in-person” show held in 2019.

Messe Berlin CEO Martin Ecknig left) and Singapore Tourism Board chief executive Keith Tan (right) extend the show contract for three years.

But participants gave the show a big thumbs up. They were back renewing contacts and negotiating business face-to-face after a two-year pause.

“The positive feedback from all attendees showed us how important personal exchange is after two years of holding a purely digital event. As a leading trade fair for Asia’s travel industry, ITB Asia once again provided an opportunity and platform for the industry to rebuild and reconnect”, said Messe Berlin CEO Martin Ecknig, who pointed to the “stellar line up of industry giants headlined ITB Asia Conference sessions under the theme “Go Big & Go Forward: Travel Industry on the Road to Recovery and Growth.”

The closing press statement was light on show performance details other than to acknowledge the three-day event had generated 27,000 business appointments and 3,950 minutes of conference talk curated by 150 speakers in 100 sessions.

In 2019, the show delivered an identical volume of business appointments as in 2022. ITB Asia 2019 recorded 1,300 exhibitors and 1,250 travel buyers who conducted their business on two floors of the Sands Expo and Convention Centre. ITB Asia 2019 claimed around 13,000 participants from 132 countries walked the aisles.

However, in contrast, even the most rudimentary figures for the 2022 event were absent from last week’s closing report other than the 27,000 business sessions logged in the B2B show’s pre-scheduled appointments system. Information on past shows indicated that 65% of the buyers seeking appointments came from Asia.

Information on the two ITB Asia Virtual shows (edition 13 in 2020 and edition 14 in 2021) indicated a much higher level of business appointments and business exchanges – 35,000 for the 2020 event and 42,100 for 2021. The two virtual shows each fielded around 3,200  travel product showcases presented by 400 exhibitors visited by 800 buyers who registered for the shows.

Without a doubt, we prefer an in-person format to a virtual show. We all appreciate the face-to-face encounters, but from the ITB Asia website data, the two virtual shows delivered a much higher turnover of business meetings and exchanges at a much lower cost. As the cost-of-living crisis bites worldwide, travel budgets will face cuts, and travel trade shows could be the losers despite the joys of reconnecting after a two-year pause.

ITB Asia has posted its super early bird discount rates for booth space rentals for the 2023 show this week. The starting rate for super early birds is USD4,994.10 (9SQM). For that, you get the basic booth setup, two badges and one appointment set with 30 slots that go into the pre-matched appointment App.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Tourism Board extended its strategic partnership with ITB Asia Messe Berlin (Singapore) for three more shows from 2023 to 2025.

Father Christmas was back after a two-year absence at ITB Asia.

Sabah means business at ITB Asia

SINGAPORE, 21 October 2022: Sabah Tourism Board is on a business mission to kick-start tourism recovery through B2B networking and negotiations with international tour operators attending the 15th ITB Asia.

During the three-day show that adopted an in-person format after a two-year gap, STB secured 34 advance appointments with travel-related companies around Asia. Additional business appointments materialised during the trade show sessions.

Sabah Tourism is highlighting Sabah as a “preferred Business Event destination” at this year’s show to encourage more international and national conferences, meetings, expos, and events to meet in Sabah.

“To encourage more business events in Sabah, STB is giving a financial incentive to national and international companies who fit the criteria and successfully hold their events in Sabah,” said Sabah Tourism Board chief marketing officer Tay Shu Lan.

Earlier this year, Sabah hosted the 2nd Asia Park Congress with over 1200 participants worldwide. Next month, Sabah will host the World Tourism Conference welcoming more than 700 participants during the 28 to 30 November event.

During ITB Asia, Sabah Tourism is also introducing Community Based Tourism to visiting prospects and reconnecting with travel trade executives after a two-year hiatus due to the global pandemic situation.

Hotel investment revives in 2022

SINGAPORE, 21 October 2022: A combination of pent-up demand, a resurgence of cross-border transactions, and a buoyant travel industry will lift Asia Pacific hotel investment to over USD10.7 billion in 2022.

According to analysis in JLL Hotels & Hospitality Group’s Hotel Investment Highlights Asia Pacific 2H 2022, investment volumes are projected to increase by 14% year-on-year as normalcy returns to the market with the resumption of leisure and business travel in the region.

In the first nine months of 2022, hotel transactions in the Asia Pacific totalled USD8.4 billion, a 16% increase year-on-year. Volumes were most substantial in Japan, which reclaimed its position as the region’s most active travel market, logging USD2.3 billion in transactions for the first nine months of the year. Significantly, South Korea reached a historic peak, with year-to-date transactions of USD1.8 billion setting a new benchmark. Investment activity also remained strong in China at US$1.2 billion and in Australia at USD696 million.

Over the nine months, the average price per key rose to USD445,000 from USD331,000 a year earlier. A total of 123 hotel deals were transacted in 2022 year-to-date versus 139 year-on-year in 2021, indicating that larger assets and hospitality platforms are being transacted more this year.

“Hotel investment transitioned from recovery to growth in 2022, led by the surge of tourism and corporate business demand, prompting investors to deploy capital in a big way. Although external headwinds are brewing and the availability of investment-grade assets will remain a challenge, we remain extremely optimistic that the current growth trajectory will stay the course albeit with a more conservative approach to pricing and a fluid economic situation,” says  JLL Hotels & Hospitality Group senior managing director, head of investment sales, Asia Pacific Nihat Ercan.

JLL analysis shows some pressure on the industry as institutional capital is outstripping the supply of hotels available for acquisition in Asia Pacific’s markets. According to 120 respondents polled by JLL, 73% of investors are interested in deploying capital in the hotel sector in the next 12 months. As a result, investors are also becoming more creative with using their real estate to maximise their income potential. Despite the pandemic, the alternative accommodation sector has proven to be resilient, and the blurring of real estate sectors is accelerating the growth of alternative accommodations across all regions.

Increasingly, with rising interest rates, access to debt will influence purchasing decisions. JLL’s recent poll of investors reported 74% indicating that their access to debt had remained similar to 2021 levels or deteriorated further, and 63% indicated that borrowing costs had increased. The rising cost debt will likely benefit cash-rich buyers, believes JLL, with high net worth individuals (HNWIs) and family offices playing a more active role in the hotels market for the rest of the year and into 2023.

According to JLL analysis, the Asia Pacific hotels market will continue to draw more investment in 2023. Still, the combination of macroeconomic headwinds and other external factors will ensure a slower growth trajectory. For the full year, investment volumes will likely grow by around 6%, says JLL, to finish 2023 at USD11.5 billion.

“The outlook for the region’s hospitality is robust yet realistic, a fact that will be reinforced by more measured transactional growth in 2023. The hotel industry should be better positioned to adapt to inflationary pressures. While the sector will remain a sound investment, we expect activity to grow slower,” says JLL Hotels & Hospitality Group, Asia Pacific CEO Mike Batchelor.

Pandaw returns to the Mekong

SINGAPORE, 21 October 2022: After successful sailings on Vietnam’s Red River last month, Pandaw Cruises announced its luxury riverboat  RV Bassac has resumed sailings between Vietnam and Cambodia.

Trips on the Mekong River linking Thailand and Laos are also open for bookings leaving only Myanmar off the radar. Pandaw Cruises’ fleet in the country remains at anchor until the political and security environment improves.

The first batch of travellers since 2020 boarded in Ho Chi Minh City’s port (Saigon) for the first cruise taking in two Mekong River countries, Vietnam and Cambodia. The trip included visiting Siem Reap, the gateway town for travellers exploring the World Heritage Angkor temples.

Pandaw Cruises noted that “not everything went exactly to schedule, with very high waters in Cambodia meaning sailing up the Tonle Sap River was impossible.” The captain improvised. Taking advantage of the high water conditions on the Mekong River, the cruise sailed further upstream towards Kratie, the home of the Mekong dolphin, where excursions to view the endangered mammals were organised.

The seven-night expeditions on the Mekong River have a 10% discovery discount on specific dates as the company brings back its luxury river boats to the Mekong River.

Pandaw has set new dates for its Laos Mekong sailings for its 10-night sailings for Christmas, New Year 2022 and March 2023 on the refurbished RV Sabaidee Pandaw.

Top-of-the-world ski experiences

SINGAPORE, 21 October 2022: Luxury travel operator Scott Dunn, who has specialised in ski holidays for over three decades, is pitching to residents in Asia who yearn for a wintery escape to stunning snow-capped mountain ranges.

It sells winter holiday and ski packages to the world’s most sumptuous ski destinations, dishing up perfect powdery snow conditions and awe-inspiring landscapes.

Scott Dunn has just been named Best Specialist Tour Operator in Condé Nast Traveller’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards for an incredible 10th year in a row.

Whether you’re a beginner to the world of snow sports or an avid skier ready to put your skills to the test, Scott Dunn’s seasoned travel experts recommend top-of-the-world ski experiences.

Winter festivals in Hokkaido

Hokkaido, Japan, has long been synonymous with a picture-perfect winter wonderland, and it’s no wonder. In the famed ‘Powder Triangle’ of Niseko, Rusutsu and Furano, ski enthusiasts will be pleased to find metres-deep, dry powder, one that’s often dubbed magical by skiers of every level. The snow in the region is famed for its silky feel: For veteran skiers, that makes it easier to gain speed and turn, while ski novices will appreciate the softness of the powder, which can help cushion any potential bumps or falls.

The region also hosts numerous winter snow festivals. The Sapporo Yuki Matsuri is an event that draws millions of visitors from Japan and around the world to Sapporo each year and features incredible snow and ice sculptures, snow rides and other attractions, all with a wonderfully convivial atmosphere.

Asahikawa Fuyu Matsuri holds a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest snow sculpture.
Otaru Yuki Akari no Michi transforms the charming harbour city of Otaru with dozens of snow lanterns, candles and lights scattered about the canals, and the Lake Shikaribetsu Kotan, where a man-made village wrought of snow and ice appears, replete with igloo lodges, bars, and an open-air onsen bath.

Italian Dolomites

The UNESCO-listed peaks of the mighty Dolomites offer some of the most beautiful settings for those who enjoy cross-country skiing, excursions with mountain guides, snowshoeing, ice climbing or simply sledging. It’s also the best place to experience the Dolomite Superski, a carousel of 12 interconnected ski resorts with 1,200 km of prepared pistes, all set against some of the world’s most beautiful backdrops. The spectacular Dolomite mountains also hide a trove of off-piste wonders that can scarcely be found elsewhere.

Enjoy the breathtaking natural beauty of the Dolomites by staying in remote lodges called rifugios — which range from simple mountain cabins to more elaborate lodges — scattered around the region. Each rifugio offers different experiences and unique scenic views depending on each location. Some, for example, require cable cars for access: the higher and more remote the rifugio, the more amazing the views will be. At these rifugios you’ll find hearty offerings like dumplings and ragù, along with a steaming cup of espresso — the perfect bookend between ski runs.

For those looking for a more fixed base to ski out of, there’s the family-run Rosa Alpina, which is nestled in the charming village of San Cassiano. The property is also home to the renowned restaurant St Hubertus, the famed 3-Michelin star restaurant. Families and those travelling in larger groups will adore Chalet Zeno — a part of the Rosa Alpina — a stylish chalet apartment that comfortably sleeps up to seven, and overlooks the village of San Cassiano and the majestic Dolomite mountains.

Whistler, Canada

In Whistler, Canada, you’ll find some of the most varied and sprawling ski terrains in North America — some call it some of the best skiing that can be had in the region. From large, above-the-treeline open bowls to smooth cruising terrain and glacier skiing through chutes and gullies, the two spectacular mountains in the region — Whistler and Blackcomb — present a dazzling expanse of terrain that will keep experts happy for weeks on end and offer beginners a wide range of activities as well.

Beyond regular skiing, Whistler’s varied landscape also allows thrillseekers to pursue plenty of other outdoor activities: Snowmobiling, dog sledging, zip lining and even glacier skiing —  there are plenty of other winter sports to be done in Whistler. Tuckered out from all the activities but can’t stay away from the slopes? Come sundown, head outdoors for a moonlit snowshoe cookout, and savour campfire favourites while you gaze upon the stars.

Iceland’s Troll Peninsula.

Beyond the capital city of Reykjavik, head to Iceland’s scenic Troll Peninsula – which may sound intimidating but is in reality, home to some of the country’s most extraordinary mountainscapes. Troll Peninsula also boasts excellent powder quality, which can be attributed to the maritime climate, and varies between deep powder and corn snow. For seasoned skiers who are looking to try something new, the region’s 1,500 square miles of skiable terrain and the extended daylight hours make it the perfect for heli-skiing, where the skier reaches the top of a mountain by helicopter instead of a ski lift.

One of the ways to experience Iceland’s wilderness at its best is at Deplar Farm; a former sheep farm tucked away in a secluded corner of the Peninsula. Deplar Farm’s 13 rooms offer fantastic views of the dramatic mountains or the peaceful lake. Soak in the views while snowshoeing through the area or while fat biking through groomed trails around the valley. To decompress after a heart-pounding day of heli-skiing, go whale watching in the nearby fjords.

Swiss Alps

Few skiing destinations are as iconic as the Swiss Alps and for a good reason. Put together pristine snow, magnificent mountains, and an incredible interconnected system of trains, gondolas and cable cars, and you have all the makings of a skier’s paradise.

One of the best ways to experience the Swiss Alps, and to visit the various ski slopes in the region, is through the famed Glacier Express, one of, if not the most, dramatic and scenic ways to experience the Swiss Alps. The journey begins in Zermatt, the famously car-free mountain village dominated by the mighty Matterhorn. Wide runs and challenging terrain make the area perfect for skiers of every level. The Glacier Express will take you to Andermatt’s charming, traditional village. The Swiss Alps have long been a byword for classic, old-world luxury, one that’s subtle and not at all ostentatious, and few properties represent this as well as the Chedi Andermatt. Skiing here is divided across three uncrowded mountains, making the property the perfect base to hit the slopes.

The final stop on the itinerary is St Moritz, home to the legendary Cresta Run, a natural ice skeleton racing toboggan track. You’ll leave Andermatt by late morning, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely lunch as you pull slowly towards St Moritz, arriving just in time for an after-lunch cocktail. As Switzerland’s largest interconnected region with over 350km of pistes, St Moritz is a haven for skiers of all levels.

Supporting Asia’s gradual reopening

Travel recovery in Asia has gained momentum over the past few months as many countries have relaxed their entry restrictions to revive their local tourism sectors and return to business as usual. In line with this positive trajectory, Emirates has been increasing capacity to some of its most popular Asian destinations to help meet the pent-up and growing air travel demand, including operating additional frequencies to Singapore and Guangzhou, deploying its flagship A380 to Seoul as well as introducing its signature First Class product on the Manila-Dubai route, operated by a Boeing 777 aircraft. In addition, Emirates plans to upgrade its Narita-Dubai route with its flagship A380 from 15 November.

STB assists villages in welcoming tourists

KOTA BELUD, Sabah, 20 October 2022: Set against the backdrop of  Mount Kinabalu, Kampung Terintidon in Kadamaian has the potential to develop into a tourist village noted for its clean environment and upbeat vibe.

The village, a two-hour drive from Kota Kinabalu, has shown outstanding community efforts and camaraderie, which can enthral visitors that come to explore the countryside.

The villagers plan tourism activities so visitors can stroll through the entire hamlet, stopping at various points to take in the sights and sounds.

To facilitate this initiative, Kampung Terintidon is divided into seven community groups, each with its committee charged with maintaining harmony and cleanliness and encouraging the development of various tourism-related activities like adventure, culture, agriculture, education, food, and handicraft.

Recently, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment cum Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai visited Kampung Terintidon to check out the tourism opportunities.

He was accompanied by the Federation of Rural Tourism Association of Sabah (FeRTAS) president cum Kadamaian Tourism Association president Walter Kandayon, and Kadamaian Community Development leader Demis Rumanti.

“I am impressed with the unity shown by villagers in the effort to beautify and develop the village to its full potential. Adding tourism-related activities would further invigorate this village and position it as a must-visit rural tourism destination.

“The Sabah Tourism Board is always willing to assist rural communities in growing their tourism potential. I hope that Kampung Terintidon will serve as a model for other communities to emulate,” said Joniston.

He also encouraged the community to work with the Sabah Tourism product team to effectively package the rural village to promote it to both locals and tourists.

Kampung Terintidon was praised for its cleanliness drive during a recent Board meeting focusing on rural tourism, following a proposal by FeRTAS to run a cleanup campaign in rural villages.

According to Kandayon, the success of Kampung Terintidon’s initiatives to clean up their particular village with community engagement has motivated FeRTAS to lead the drive to free rural communities of rubbish by 2025.

This fits the goal and plans to make Sabah a world-class destination for rural tourism by 2030.
