In a press statement last week, the airline confirmed it will introduce services from Atyrau in western Kazakhstan to Dubai on 26 October, from Astana to Abu Dhabi on 30 October, and from Almaty to Abu Dhabi on 12 December 2024. Each service will be operated twice weekly using Airbus A321neo and Airbus A321LR aircraft.

“Air Astana is delighted to further boost its presence in the Middle East, with new services to Dubai and Abu Dhabi reflecting the rapid growth in business and leisure traffic between Kazakhstan and the region. Emirates unveils signature scents in the sky

SINGAPORE, 13 Sept 2024: Emirates continues to enhance and elevate the fly better experience for its customers, this time unveiling a new collaboration with the Irish brand renowned for spearheading organic luxury — VOYA

Recently launched onboard flights in First and Business Class, Emirates has partnered with VOYA to develop bespoke Eau de Toilette fragrances that encapsulate sophistication and understated luxury. The calming, nature-based fragrances have been thoughtfully curated exclusively for Emirates, and they are celebrated as the first-ever Eau de Toilette fragrances in VOYA’s bestselling product range. Featuring 400 flights each day across the network, Emirates will commission hundreds of thousands of 50ml bottles of the new VOYA Eau de Toilette fragrances every year.

To develop the signature scents, Emirates and VOYA examined international and industry trends to develop scents representative of both brands. Inspired by the global nature of Emirates, catering to customers from around the world, the natural essential oils used in the scents are derived from a myriad of destinations and the design of the bottle is inspired by the ultimate travel image – the sunset over the ocean. Drawing inspiration from the lush landscapes and rich heritage of Ireland, the collaboration promises an unparalleled sensory experience, blending sophistication and nature while evoking the tranquillity of the Emerald Isle.

VOYA Founders Mark and Kira Walton have years of experience working with fragrances from around the world and relished the opportunity to create a luxury fragrance for Emirates. Their goal was to marry elements from their home in Ireland with the iconic scents of the Middle East, delivering evocative and unique signature perfumes. Elegantly presented in muted glass bottles, the male fragrance is a heady blend of bergamot, pepper and white florals — a smooth and spicy scent that conveys a sense of calm.

“I have always loved the forest like the ocean, so I wanted to create a fresh and earthy fragrance. There is a lot of depth in this fragrance and the base notes become quite pronounced after the initial top notes subside.” VOYA founder Mark Walton.

The feminine perfume by contrast, has the delicate and revitalising air of honeysuckle, neroli and citrus, a sweet and uplifting fragrance that portrays a sense of joy.

“Honeysuckle is often found on coastal cliffs in Ireland. It is a beautiful plant, and it’s synonymous with my childhood. I needed to pair this with fresh citrus notes like orange, basil, and vegetables, balanced with woody notes like cedarwood and gurjun balsam. The fragrance is unashamedly sweet but uplifting, and it is a perfect travel companion.”  – VOYA founder Kira Walton.

The new fragrances are complimentary to use in the Business Class and First Class washrooms. They add to the existing suite of VOYA luxury spa products beloved by Emirates customers for the past eight years.

The VOYA range available to Emirates customers includes shampoo, conditioner, body wash, cleanser, body moisturiser, hand wash, soap, and hand cream, available in the signature A380 Onboard Shower Spa, as well as in the complimentary showers in Emirates’ luxury airport lounges. VOYA hand and body cream can also be found in the First and Business Class washrooms. The Emirates range features three fragrances that customers can select depending on their mood or preference: revitalising rosemary and mint, tranquil lavender and rosemary, and soothing lime and mandarin. VOYA’s skincare line for Emirates is made from natural seaweed, hand-harvested from the sea beds of Co. Sligo, Ireland.

In keeping with Emirates’ commitment to sourcing responsibly, VOYA products contain as many organic ingredients as possible and are packaged using recyclable materials. VOYA is proud to be a cruelty-free brand that opposes animal testing in cosmetic research and partners with Plastic Bank to support its mission to stop plastic before it enters the ocean.

Travel bookings over the past two weeks compared to the Dragon Boat Festival earlier this year indicated a surge of interest and bookings, flagging almost complete recovery to pre-pandemic levels. The festival season extends for the first weeks of the 8th month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Celebrations and holidays precede and succeed the main harvest festivities on 17 September.

Founded in 2016, Fliggy has swiftly emerged as China’s leading online travel platform.

Domestic travel

Hotel bookings in China have surged by about 60% compared to the same period in 2019, with four and five-star hotels and boutique homestays accounting for 60% of total bookings.

Car rentals have more than doubled compared to the same period in 2019.

Prices for domestic flights and hotels are lower than during the same period last year but slightly higher than in 2019.

Interest in traditional Mid-Autumn Festival activities, such as moon and flower appreciation, lantern displays, and temple fairs, has increased by around 60% from last year.

Top domestic destinations include Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, Chongqing, Wuhan, and Xi’an, all known for their rich travel resources in neighbouring areas.

Emerging destinations like Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Jingdezhen, Yanbian, Datong, and Diqing have experienced rapid growth, often more than doubling compared to 2019.

International travel

Independent travel has led to a roughly 30% increase in bookings for local leisure tourism services abroad compared to the Dragon Boat Festival.

Popular international destinations now include Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.

More about the Mooncake Festival
China’s Mid-Autumn Festival is a harvest festival celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. This year, it falls on 17 September 2024.

It’s a time for family reunion, offering thanks to the harvest, and praying for longevity and good fortune. The festival is marked by various traditions, including:

Mooncake consumption: A sweet pastry with a filling, often containing lotus seed or red bean paste.

Moon watching: Families gather to admire the full moon, which is believed to be at its brightest and fullest during this time.

Lantern displays: Colorful lanterns are lit and displayed, symbolising hope and prosperity.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture, and Chinese communities worldwide celebrate it.

KUL tops low-cost hubs

SINGAPORE, 13 September 2024: OAG, a leading data platform for the global travel industry, released its Megahubs 2024 ranking of the top 50 most internationally connected airports on Wednesday.

According to the OAG Megahubs rankings, Asia Pacific is home to three of the top five Megahubs: Kuala Lumpur (KUL) is second, Tokyo Haneda (HND) is third, and Seoul Incheon (ICN) is fifth. LNR took the top spot, and AMS was number four.

Connectivity growth in Asia is spread widely, with an additional four Megahubs in Southeast Asia making the list (CGK, BKK, MNL and SIN), and seven in North East Asia (NRT, PVG, HKG, FUK, CAN, TPE and PEK). AirAsia is the dominant carrier there, with a 35% share of total flights and 48% of all LCC capacity.

Emirates empowers pilots with emissions data

DUBAI, UAE, 12 September 2024: On every one of Emirates’ 470 flights that depart daily, all pilots actively use GE FlightPulse, an analytics application that provides vital operational data relating to the safety and fuel efficiency performance of each mission.

Since its introduction, FlightPulse has been one of the key tools supporting Emirates’ fuel and emissions reduction initiatives and improving key safety metrics.

GE’s FlightPulse provides pilots with flight summary data from their missions and information on how they operated the aircraft so they can analyse their performance related to key efficiency and safety measures and review and plan for the next flight with data-driven insights. Emirates and GE have developed a customised dashboard with defined KPIs and analysis tailored to the airline’s requirements and operational averages, and it is available to all pilots and management. FlightPulse also supports Emirates with photo-realistic custom replays of simulations of entire flights, displaying all the operational procedures implemented by pilots in sequential order of the flight path, matching their own flight deck experience.

Emirates initiated the FlightPulse project in 2021, working closely with GE to customise and enhance the tool for its requirements. Today the application has been meticulously enhanced and covers four key areas: fuel efficiency, safety metrics, operational data & analytics, and research accompanied with insights and statistics for every route on the Emirates network.

While this tool is used by other airlines, Emirates was the first airline to deploy it to its over 4,000-strong pilot community, keeping them connected to a wealth of airline-specific and individual historical data in one place. Through this highly intuitive tool, pilots are empowered to access their own efficiency metrics, benchmarking themselves to the averages of their peers following every flight they operate, in addition to the ability to retrieve key operational insights for future flight planning.

Captain Hassan Al Hammadi, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President Flight Operations, remarked on the successful utilisation of the tool: “FlightPulse has helped put data in the hands of our pilots and flight operations teams, making them more connected than ever to enhance operational, safety and fuel efficiency. It not only gives them a retrospective view to reflect on how they can improve but also equips them when making future operational decisions. We’ve seen remarkable improvements in fuel efficiency and other operational and safety KPIs, and we’ll continue to push this technology forward and enhance it further as part of our commitment to continuous development. This tool has brought about a key shift in flight operations data monitoring, where both management and pilots have transparency and visibility of key operational data related to safety and efficiency. This shift resulted in better collaboration and understanding between management and the pilot community in managing safety and efficiency”.

Captain Esmaeel Hassan Fard, Type Rating Instructor on the B777 uses the tool extensively when operating flights: “When preparing for a flight, I use FlightPulse to review data from my previous flights, focusing on key elements like safety and fuel efficiency. Then, I analyse the specific route and conditions for the upcoming flight using the insights and historical data available for the specific city pairing. This helps me make decisions about fuel management, operational procedures, and any adjustments needed for optimal safety and efficiency during the flight. By benchmarking my performance against fleet-wide standards, I’m motivated to continuously improve when it comes to overall efficiency.”

Captain Abdalla Al Hammadi, Fleet Technical Pilot, A380 expands on how FlightPulse has enhanced his flight metrics: “FlightPulse presents us with performance statistics and data on any of our past flights, allowing us to uncover new areas to optimise operations and efficiency. A new feature called pre-flight was added recently, allowing me to check data for the past 90 days for a particular sector or airport I will be flying to. Which runway can I expect? Do I expect any holding? This is valuable information that supports my preparation and provides me with the appropriate visibility to adjust my techniques, and ultimately helps me make better decisions when it comes to safety and efficiency.”

Emirates continues to invest heavily in a connected flight deck and has recently gone paperless, consolidating its operational flight plan and briefing package for each flight through an enhanced version of mBriefing from Lido Systems, a simple application on every pilot’s iPad, which presents relevant information for each flight that can be downloaded easily. Pilots can monitor flight progress and join up information through other apps that provide information like enroute weather information, including turbulence forecasts. Historically, this information was distributed on paper to flight deck teams. The airline estimates that 15 million pieces of paper will be saved through the process.
