Tourist Police crackdown on fake tours

-

BANGKOK, 28 March 2019: Tourist Police have arrested a travel agent for allegedly defrauding Thai travellers by selling fake tours to Croatia, Russia and Japan.

Earlier this week the Tourist Police and the Technology Crime Prevention and Suppression Centre (SAO) confirmed they had apprehended the managing director of Freeways Travel Company following the issue of an arrest warrant by the Provincial Court.

The company director is accused of deliberately defrauding Thai travellers who had booked holidays including airline tickets that failed to materialise causing an estimated loss of THB3 million.

Tourist Police received complaints from Thai tourists that they had bought tour packages from Freeways Travel Company for travel to Croatia, Russia and Japan.

Thai travellers who had bought the package holidays claimed the travel company’s representatives failed to turn up at the airport on the departure date or subsequently claimed the booked tours had been postponed.

The company’s managing director faces charges of failing to deliver contractual obligations for hotel, airline and tour bookings that were offered in tour packages.

The Department of Technology for Crime Prevention and Suppression Centre and Tourist Police initiated an investigation of Freetown Travel Company Limited and according to the report on the Immigration Bureau’s website news page, filed for an arrest warrant for the company’s managing director through the Provincial Court of Talingchan, 24 March. He was subsequently arrested ahead of making an appearance in court.

If found guilty, the company’s registered managing director could face “imprisonment for up to three years, or a fine not exceeding THB60,000, or both in accordance with Section 341 of the Criminal Code.”
