MALE, Maldives, 28 March 2019: The Maldives doesn’t appear on Thailand’s visitor arrival data chart as a noticeable source of visitors, but its citizens will soon be able to visit Thailand visa-free.
According to a report on Rajjee.mv, an online news channel in the Maldives, a delegation from Thailand’s Foreign Ministry has concluded a visa-free travel agreement that will come into effect 14 April.
The visa waiver agreement was signed at a meeting between the Maldives Foreign Minister, Abdulla Shahid, and a delegation from Thailand, Rajjee reported.
The agreement gives Maldivians up to a 30-day visa-free stay in Thailand.
At present they can obtain a visa-on-arrival at Thailand’s international airports with an exemption of the THB2,000 fee.
Maldives is also listed as one of the nationalities eligible for Thailand’s new 30-day eVisa that has been out-sourced to VFS Global.
The agreement with Thailand on visa-free stays follows a landmark agreement with India that allows Maldivians to stay in India visa-free for up to 90 days.
Thai citizens are allowed to visit the Maldives for up to 30 days visa-free, according to the website Thairesidents.com.
