New route boosts Sarawak visits

-

KUCHING, 24 August 2018: Visitors from China and Singapore increased during the first five months of 2018 according to the latest count from the Sarawak Tourism Board.

Based on STB data, January to May, there was an uptick of 20.2% in arrivals from China and 15.8% from Singapore.

The report was released in the August edition of the tourism board’s Hornbill Newsletter that is emailed to travel partners, worldwide.

The Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman, attributed the increase to the introduction the Kuching-Shenzen direct air route in December 2017.

During the five months of 2018, 19,641 visitors arrived from China and 17,856 from Singapore, with overall visitor arrivals reaching 1.75 million.

The Ministry is targeting 4.5 million visitor arrivals and expecting MYR8.05 billion in tourism receipts this year.

“The performance if achieved will continue to ensure sustained growth to the tourism industry as it embarks on the Visit Sarawak Campaign that will be launched at the end of the year,” STB said.
