SEPANG, 19 October 2018: AirAsia is improving connectivity between Sabah state in east Malaysia and Kunming in southwest China.
The low-cost airline will launch a new direct route from Kota Kinabalu to Kunming in Yunnan province starting 30 November.
The four weekly flights to Kunming mark AirAsia Group’s fourth route to the capital of Yunnan province after flights from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand. It is also AirAsia’s 10th international route from its Kota Kinabalu hub.
AirAsia Malaysia CEO Riad Asmat said: “Kunming, known as the ‘City of Eternal Spring’, is famed for its pleasant climate and perennial flower blooms year-round, and is the perfect gateway to Southwest China.
“This new route signals our commitment to expanding Kota Kinabalu as our hub in East Malaysia. We have launched three international routes from Kota Kinabalu this year to Bangkok, Macau and now Kunming. We are also doubling our flights from Kota Kinabalu to Shenzhen from 1 November.
“We have carried more than 700,000 passengers travelling between China and Kota Kinabalu, and we are confident this new route will further boost visitor arrivals,” he added.
AirAsia is offering a special introductory all-in members fare from MYR138* for Kota Kinabalu-Kunming, available on airasia.com and the AirAsia mobile app until 28 October for travel from 30 November to 30 March 2019.
The capital city of Yunnan province is known for its cultural diversity, with 25 ethnic groups forming the perfect blend of culture and heritage. It also boasts natural wonders such as the magnificent limestone formations in Shilin (Stone Forest), a UNESCO World Heritage site, the enchanting Jiu Xiang Cave and colourful Dongchuan Red Land.
Yunnan is positioned to be a key hub in Southwest China for the One Belt, One Road initiative, which will provide new trading and export opportunities between China and ASEAN as well as South Asia.
