India’s ski resort thinks big

GULMARG, INDIA, 27 March 2017: It’s an area better known as a hotbed of insurgency but Indian Kashmir’s only ski resort -– a favourite among aficionados for its silky snows — is now trying to attract international-level competition to its slopes.

Nestled in the mountain range that encircles the Indian-controlled Kashmir Valley, Gulmarg is a stone’s throw from the highly-militarised unofficial border with Pakistan.

Myanmar mulls more beach resorts

RAKHINE STATE, 16 February 2017: Myanmar’s Rakhine state government has issued a proposal to the union government to open seven new beach resorts in Gwa Township and two in Thandwe Township.

Irrawaddy News quoted the regional minister for finance, revenue and economics, U Kyaw Aye Thein, saying the seven locations in Gwa township have potential to become attractive beach resorts that would appeal to international visitors.

“The state government is awaiting approval from the union government to identify and approve hotel zones on the Gwa coastline.” Read more

Crown offloads Macau casino stake

SYDNEY, 16 December 2016: Australian mogul James Packer’s Crown Resorts on Thursday slashed its stake in a Macau joint venture and shelved plans for a Las Vegas casino in a scaling back of operations to cut debt.

The casino operator, which had 18 staff detained in China in October, also said it would scrap a proposal to spin off global assets.

Crown has been hurt by softening demand in Macau following a Chinese corruption crackdown and will sell 13.4% of Melco Crown Entertainment for AUD1.6 billion (USD1.2 billion) to joint-venture partner Melco International. Read more
