ASEAN faces up to marine debris

General Surasak Karnjanarat, Minister of The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment of Thailand presided over the ASEAN Conference.

PHUKET, 28 November, 2017: ASEAN countries met in Phuket last week to tackle marine debris as reports identify four ASEAN nations among the top sea polluter, worldwide.

Phuket hosted the ASEAN Conference on Reducing Marine Debris  at the JW Marriot Phuket Resort & Spa.

Over 300  marine experts from 10 ASEAN member countries and representatives from ASEAN countries’ environmental ministries, including a representative from China, academic experts in marine studies and international conservation groups participated in the event. Read more

Pattaya clears beach garbage

PATTAYA, 19 October 2017: City authorities say they have cleaned the resort’s beaches after heavy monsoon storms washed up tons of mostly plastic garbage on the resort’s main bay and adjacent Jomthien beach.

Manager online reported, 18 October, that Jomtien beach was clean once more after damning pictures appeared, earlier in the week, on social websites and a local Pattaya online news channel.

The photos appeared to show tourists sunbathing on the beach in the midst of a pile of trash. It looked as if they were lying in the garbage, but that was probably exaggerated by the camera’s zoom that reduced depth of field. Read more

Hotels champion beach clean up

PHUKET, 7 September 2017: The Phuket Hotels Association is encouraging locals and tourists to value the beauty of Phuket’s beaches and surrounding Andaman seas through a “Hearts with Hands, Keep Phuket Clean beach clean up event Saturday 16 September.

This is the second clean-up initiative to be launched this month; the other focusing on Samet Island, in the Gulf of Thailand sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

The Phuket Hotels Association’s Environmental & Sustainability Working Group launched the island wide initiative in support of the International Coastal Clean Up Campaign, which will see millions of volunteers across the globe unite to fight ocean pollution. Read more

Ban plastic bottles on your travels

PHNOM PENH, 15 August 2017: Journeys Within, a US-based tour company, has introduced a video illustrating a day in the life of a reusable water bottle in the hands of a traveller visiting Siem Reap, Cambodia.

It illustrates the ‘Refill Not Landfill’ campaign, which aims to cut down on millions of single-use plastic water bottles discarded in Cambodia annually.

Tour companies are encouraged to offer reusable aluminium bottles and refill stations as an alternative. Read more

Cambodia campaigns against plastic

PHNOM PENH, 2 December 2015: Cambodia launched a campaign, late last week, to reduce the use of plastic bags and plastic waste that is littering streets in an effort to make the country more environmentally friendly for both local residents and visitors.

The campaign is jointly organised by Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Environment, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), and the Union of Youth Federations in Cambodia.

The campaign attempts to reduce the use of plastic and encourage more recycling of plastic waste that is littering the streets of towns and tourist destinations. Read more
