BANGKOK, 4 December 2017: Thailand’s new Minister of Tourism and Sports, Weerasak Kowsurat, will have his work cut out for him, although he is no stranger to tourism, having served as its minister in 2008.

After a roller coaster ride spanning decades,  due in part to fickle Thai politics, coups and demonstrations that curtailed growth, Thailand’s tourism is now enjoying an astounding recovery.

This year, international visits will exceed 32 million and there are reliable projections that estimate arrivals could easily exceed 35 million before 2020 dawns. Read more

A former minister returns to Thai tourism

BANGKOK: 27 November 2017:  Thailand’s Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, completed a major Cabinet reshuffle, 24 November, that saw Minister of Tourism and Sports, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, step down from the post after three years.

Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau chairman, Weersak Kowsuat, a former minister of tourism and sports in 2008 and chair of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, replaces Kobkarn.

Commenting on her Facebook page, Kobkarn described her ministerial term as “three valuable years to serve the nation, together with all government agencies, the private sector, especially the younger generation.” Read more

India tourism minister appointed

BANGkOK, 15 September 2017. India’s official government news channels confirmed Alphons Kannanthanam has been appointed Minister for Tourism Government of India.

He is a retired Indian Administrative Service officer and was recognised in Time Magazine’s list of 100 Young Global Leaders in 1989.

He worked in the Indian Administration Service until 2006, when he was elected a Member of the Legislative Assembly, from Kanjirappally in Kottayam District of Kerala. Read more

CHIANG MAI, 15 June 2017: Calling tourism a heart-to-heart business Thailand’s Minster of Tourism and Sports, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, is counting on communities to spread tourism dollars across the country.

The minister was the opening speaker at Thailand Travel Mart’s Tourism Trend Talk Forum, Wednesday, hosted in Chiang Mai.

The forum addressed the challenges of community-based tourism, food tourism and issues linked to safety. Read more
