Japan and China top for nosh

PARIS, 30 November 2017: Japan and China have more of the world’s best restaurants than anywhere else, according to the La Liste ranking, which will be published next week.

Although the French-based list will declare Guy Savoy’s flagship Paris riverside restaurant the best in the world for the second year running — and French cooking dominates the top 100 — the big trend is the climb of Chinese haute cuisine.

“The rise and rise of China is the big story,” said Jorg Zipprick, who crunched the numbers for the “guide of guides”, which was set up as a “more scientific and reliable” rival three years ago to the British-based 50 Best Restaurants. Read more

Michelin Bangkok launches this December

BANGKOK, 25 April 2017: Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports says the first Michelin Guide Bangkok, due to be published in December, will help to boost the country’s food tourism, while adding value to Thai restaurants that are awarded Michelin stars.

Tourism Authority of Thailand entered  into a partnership with Michelin Travel Partner, last week, to publish a Bangkok edition of the prestigious Michelin Guide.

Tourism and Sports Minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, said the launch would allow local people and tourists to experience the delicious taste of Thai food in many settings.  Read more

Michelin star shines on hawkers

SINGAPORE, 5 August 2016: A queue 100-people long snakes out from a tiny food stall in Singapore’s Chinatown, each customer impatiently waiting their turn for a taste of Chan Hon Meng’s prized soya sauce-braised chicken.

He has always had loyal customers but in the days since he was awarded a Michelin star, waves of new gourmands have descended on his stall in such numbers that he’s struggling to keep up with demand.

Chan is one of two “hawkers” — so-called because many started out as street peddlers — awarded one star by the culinary bible when it launched its inaugural Singapore guide in late July. Read more
