Qatar eases visa process

DOHA, 26 June 2017: Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism Authority, have launched an e-visa platform to allow travellers to obtain tourist visas online.

Doha News reported that a tourist visa can now be obtained on the new e-visa platform, which is currently in a  pilot phase, at www.qatarvisaservice.com.

Previously, travellers were required to submit their applications through accredited Qatar-based entities, such as hotels and tour operators. Now, they can apply directly and track the status of their application online. Read more

Rainy season festivals and events

BANGKOK, 26 June 2017: Tourism Authority of Thailand is grouping events and activities into four categories to open up travel to secondary destinations and improve travel options during the rainy season.

TAT said it will concentrate on promoting food & music festivals; cultural & art festivals; creative events and recreation & sports events.

This July, activities start with the Kaeng Song Coffee Sipping and Khek River Rafting Festival to be held 1 July to 31 October at the Khek River. Read more

Lufthansa names Molnar GM Thailand

BANGKOK, 26 June 2017: Lufthansa Group has appointed Stefan Molnar as the new general manager sales in Thailand.

He will lead efforts to improve passenger airlines sales in Thailand, Vietnam and the Mekong region.

Lufthansa will be the first European carrier to fly the A380 to Bangkok when the service starts this October. Read more

Taxi drivers told to behave

BANGKOK, 26 June 2017: The Land Transport Department has asked taxi drivers to improve their manners after some drivers set about a car driver they suspected was an Uber of Grab member.

The incident that occurred at the weekend could have turned nasty.

SINGAPORE, 23 June 2017: Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Singapore Tourism Board are seeking feedback on proposed amendments to the Travel Agents Act and Regulations.

The public consultation exercise will run through to 12 July.

The review of the Travel Agents Act and Regulations is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the regulatory framework and facilitate a pro-business environment in the travel agents industry as well as enhance consumer protection (1).  Read more

WTTC takes a swipe at Cuba ban

LONDON, 23 June 2017: The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) expressed disappointment at President Trump’s plan to reverse key elements of the trading relationship between the US and Cuba, which was originally outlined by President Obama in 2014 and by his visit last year.

“The Cuban people are directly benefiting from increased business and leisure travel to Havana. Travel brings income to the people who work in our industry. President Trump’s statements indicate that the Cuban people, rather than the government will be hit by this policy change,” said WTTC president & CEO, David Scowsill.

“Airlines, cruise lines and hotel groups have all made significant investments and plans to create jobs and to grow the industry in Cuba, based on clear direction from the previous administration. Our sector needs consistency from governments and stability of policy. This is a clear and unwelcome reversal.” Read more

AirAsia orders 14 more A320ceo

LE BOURGET, FRANCE, 23 June 2017: AirAsia has signed an agreement with Airbus to order an additional 14 A320ceo aircraft to meet higher than expected near-term growth on the carrier’s regional network.

The contract, which is subject to AirAsia board approval, was announced at the Paris Air Show Thursday.

It will see the total number of A320 family aircraft ordered by AirAsia rise to 592, reaffirming its position as the largest airline customer for the Airbus single aisle product line. Read more
