Golf a driver to boost tourism

-

PHUKET, 26 July 2018: The Thailand Golf Travel Mart 2018 closes today on a positive note after three days of networking between golf content suppliers and specialised golf tour companies.

The event was hosted at Duangjitt Resort and Spa in Patong, Phuket, 23 to 26 July.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand said the event helped to strengthen and build awareness for the country’s expanding golf tourism business.

Promoting golf is part of a wider strategy to focus on high-quality tourism and golf has been identified as a key sector that draws high-spend visitors to the country.

Following the pattern of previous golf travel marts, TAT hosted golf tour operators and buyers from key international markets providing them with an opportunity to meet with suppliers and golf course owners from around Thailand.

At this year’s event sustainability and the environment gained an airing on the sidelines of the B2B appointment sessions.  Delegates were encouraged to use reusable tumblers in order to decrease the use of single-use plastic bottles.

Golf tourism is major revenue earner for the country. In 2016, around 400,000 foreign golfers played at golf courses across Thailand, generating income of around USD138.5 million (THB4.88 billion).

The average spend per person for golf is around USD346 (THB12,215), which is ranked as the second highest spend for all travelling categories in Thailand.
