Dream’s reality in the Philippines

BANGKOK, 4 October 2017:  Dream Hotel Group signed a management contract for its first hotel in the Philippines, last week.

The 220-key Dream Hotel is located on one of Carabao Island’s beaches, just three miles north of Boracay and eight miles from the international airport. It is being developed by SkyCity Inc.

Recently rated third best island destination in the world by Condé Nast Traveller magazine, Borocay welcomes 3 million visitors annually mainly from Europe and North Asia. Read more

Singapore’s cruise centre promotes islands

SINGAPAORE, 13 September 2017 – Singapore Cruise Centre and PT Nongsa Terminal Bahari (NTB) have entered into a marketing collaboration agreement to promote tourism to Batam and Riau Islands.

Under the agreement, SCC and NTB will jointly work on marketing and promotional activities to increase tourism to three islands.

They will pursue goals to achieve sustainable and continual growth in passenger traffic at NTB’s Nongsapura Ferry Terminal to draw more visitors to Nongsa, Batam and the Riau Islands. Read more

Cambodia introduces marine tax

PHNOM PENH, 24 August 2017: Sihanoukville authorities confirmed, this week, they will introduce a new tax on tourists claiming it will help to protect the environment.

News of the new environment tax surfaced earlier in the month. In its latest update to travel partners, Asian Trails, a leading tour operator in Cambodia, confirmed the tax would be levied on all tourists using boat transport for an overnight stay or a  full-day excursion to off-shore islands.

Tourists will be charged a USD2 tax at the point of departure. Read more

Bali top island spot to chill out

SINGAPORE, 23 February: 2017 Bali was named Best Island in the World by DestinAsian Readers’ Choice Awards 2017, organised by a tourism publication based in Singapore.

In addition to Bali taking the top slot, neighbouring island of Lombok was also placed among the top 10 Best islands in the World according to DestinAsian readers.

Phuket island, in South Thailand, came in second with Samui island taking the 4th slot and Phi Phi in eighth place. Read more

Turkish to fly to Phuket

PHUKET, 6 February 2017: Turkish Airline will start flights connecting Istanbul and Phuket this July.

According to the airline website, the new service will operate with four weekly flights starting 17 July from Istanbul. The return flight to Istanbul will departsPhuket 18 July.

The airline will use an Airbus A330-300 aircraft, configured with three cabin classes. Read more

Vietnam to push marine tourism

KHANH HOA, 1 February 2017: Khanh Hoa People’s Committee says it will brand the Vietnamese province as a marine destination focusing on sea and island tourism to boost the economy.

The committee ‘s permanent vice-chairman, Tran Son Hai, said creating a master plan to guide expansion in a sustainable manner was now a priority.

“We need to focus on our assets, which are sea and island tourist products,” he said. Read more

Tourist islands shut down

SATUN, 10 January 2017: Thailand’s Department of National parks has closed two popular tourists island, Tarutao and Adang, due to high tides and rough seas.

Thailand’s National News Bureau quoted the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation saying the marine national parks and islands in the southern region have been pounded by three  to four-metre-high tides, while ferry boat service to the islands of Tarutao, Adang and Lipe have been suspended.

The three islands are popular with domestic tourists, but are also attracting backpackers keen to avoid crowded beach resorts and islands, particularly Samui and Phangan Read more

YANGON, 22 December 2016: New travel options are opening up in Myanmar’s Mergui archipelago led by Burma Boating that offers sailing trips and a few holiday resorts located on remote islands.

Tourism promoters in Myanmar call the Mergui archipelago one of the best kept secrets of the country’s southern coast. It is changing fast as tourists begin to explore the region.

Although it officially opened to tourism in the late 1990s, the region remained way down the list of priorities for first-time travellers who preferred to explore the country’s heritage sites. Read more

What not to miss in Kep

BANGKOK, 29 August 2016: A recent Mekong Tourism sponsored media trip dashed through Kep to view its unkempt and now derelict holiday villas that were once shining stars of Cambodia’s golden independence era in the 1950s and 60s.

I was on board the tour bus that roamed the coastal and headland lanes that make up this once renowned beach resort. It was the region’s most popular holiday spot for around 20 years until 1970 when the Khmer Rouge overran the so-called “St Tropez of the East.”

Since 2010 it has been making a comeback of sorts, which is not an easy feat considering the resort’s spooky environment and its rather disappointing 1 km long pebble-strewn bay. Read more
