Silk Air upgrades with new 737

SINGAPORE, 5 October 2017: SilkAir, took delivery, Wednesday of  its first Boeing 737 MAX 8 that will be used to expand routes and present an improved inflight service level that is closer to what its parent company, Singapore Airlines offers.

The first of 37 MAX 8s ordered, marks a significant milestone in SilkAir’s journey towards expanding its network in the region and increasing frequencies.

Commenting on the MAX 8 arrival, SilkAir chief executive Foo Chai Woo said: “The new MAX 8 enables us to offer customers new destinations and paves the way for a new phase of growth.” Read more

GST shock for Indian airlines

NEW DELHI, 12 July 2017: Indian airlines will face additional costs as they prepare to pay Goods and Service Tax 1 July, but the tax bill will be even steeper for hotels and restaurants.

The GST has been fixed at 5% on domestic airline tickets  and 12% on international ticket sales.

Tour operators in India will pay 5% GST without an input tax credit facility. Read more

BA dumps passengers at military base

LISBON, 27 April 2017: British Airways offloaded a couple from a London to Jamaica flight at a Portuguese air force base, Wednesday, after a row broke out over their demands for an upgrade to business class, military officials said.

“The pilot decided to land in Lajes in the island of Terceira because of a dispute between cabin crew and a couple.

They wanted to be transferred from economy class to first class,” an air force spokesman told AFP. Read more

Qatar flies double beds

BERLIN, 9 March 2017: Qatar Airways unveiled a new business class experience, QSuite, to a packed press conference at ITB Berlin Wednesday.

Predictably, the introduction of the first ever double bed in business class was the top line for media who conjectured that it could make membership of the mile-high-club far too easy.

A hushed silence descended on the airline’s massive pavilion at ITB as the new seat was unveiled by a smiling airline’s group CEO, Akbar Al Baker, just moments before the airline’s annual press conference got underway on the opening day of the  show. Read more

Oman Air cuts business fares

BANGKOK, 12 October 2016: Oman Air is discounting promotional fares in business class for travel to selected destinations until the end of March next year.

Bookings must be secured by 20 October.

The promotion sells a roundtrip fare, inclusive of all taxes and service charges, ex-Bangkok, starting at THB29,820 to Muscat. Read more

Air Berlin expands business class

FRANKFURT, 8 August 2016: Air Berlin, Germany’s second-largest airline, said on Friday it would introduce business-class travel on all its German and European flights as part of a bid to escape long-standing financial difficulties.

“We’re at the beginning of a far-reaching process of change, at the end of which will stand a new, strengthened Air Berlin,” chief executive Stefan Pichler said in a statement.

It was part of “decisive strategic steps for a sustainable future of the company”, he went on, saying that the airline was now “clearly positioned in the premium segment among European airlines”. Read more
