A slow stretched out launch in Boracay

MANILA, 6 December 2017:  Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts claims it is setting new hospitality standards in Boracay, the Philippines, with the “launch of a new resort located on one of the tropical island’s most beautiful unspoiled beaches.”

But a check of TripAdvisor reviews indicates the Mövenpick flag, fluttering in the breeze, was welcoming guests to this hotel in October 2016.

That begs the question; how do hotel groups define ‘launch’ and ‘new’ these days? Read more

SALA Phuket revamps team

BANGKOK, 22 November, 2017: SALA Phuket Resort and Spa has hired a new general manager, executive chef, and food & beverage manager part of a top level shake-up in the group.

The resort named Anthony Van Sleeuwen as general manager.

He returns to the property where he was executive assistant manager in 2007 and later resident manager. Read more

Anantara Samui completes makeover

BANGKOK, 7 November 2017: Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort reopens, 10 December, after completing a renovation of its rooms and villas.

Located at the north end of Chaweng Beach, a 10-minute drive from the island’s airport, Anantara Lawana Koh Samui offers 122 rooms and villas, ranging from 52 to 300 sqm.

The renovation included landscaped garden, while restaurants were given a makeover. The resort claims to have the biggest meeting facilities on the island with a capacity to host 220 guests. Read more

The resort group celebrates receiving the 2017 TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for all of its award winning five-star hotels.

Bawah shortlisted for HICAP award

SINGAPORE, 6 October 2017: A USD30 million luxury resort, Bawah Island, has been shortlisted for the Reggie Shiu Development of the Year Award by Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP).

Considered one of Asia-Pacific’s most established and recognised conferences for the hotel investment and development community, the award recognises a single development of the year that represents “accomplishments in hospitality.”

Strand Yangon completes remake

YANGON, 8 September 2017: Yangon’s historic Strand Yangon is now in the final stages of a major renovation that has taken 18 months and will be completed by this November.

The 18-month project should ensure the iconic hotel, located  close the city’s riverfront, can regain its place as one of Southeast Asia’s leading hotels and establish itself as Myanmar’s first luxury urban resort.

Kata Group opens Beyond Patong

PHUKET, 7 September 2017: Kata Group has opened a new-build property, ‘Beyond Patong’, the fourth property in the group’s Beyond brand.

The new hotel follows the Beyond tradition by featuring a highly distinctive design, with a “Deep Blue Sea” theme that takes its inspiration wave shapes and marine life.

Kata Group was one of the first locally owned hotel companies on the island, a founder of Phuket tourism that traces its business roots to small family-run resorts on Kata and Karon bays in the 1970s. Read more

Carlson flies flag in Vietnam

SINGAPORE, 7 September 2017:  Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group confirmed it has sealed a management deal for a resort property under construction on Phu Quoc island, Vietnam.

Phu Quoc Tourist Investment & Development JS Company is building the property that will be branded a Radisson Blu Resort Phu Quoc.

Scheduled to open by the end of the year, the new build hotel, will have 522 rooms. It will be the group’s second resort in Vietnam following Radisson Blu Resort Cam Ranh Bay, slated to open in 2018. Read more

Superyachts return to Phuket

Phuket, 29 August 2017: Asia’s mega yachts return to Sala Phuket Resort for the 17th annual Asia Superyacht Rendezvous Cup, 19 to 21 January 2018.

The Rendezvous Cup, scheduled one week later than in previous years, will be hosted for the second year in a row at the Sala Phuket Resort on Mai Khao Bay offering a weekend of competitive sailing and parties.

AVANI Fares resort to open 2019

BANGKOK, 24 August 2017: AVANI Hotels & Resorts announced, this week, the development of its first resort in the Maldives.

AVANI Fares Maldives Resort will be located on Fares Island in the Baa Atoll and is scheduled to open in Q4 2019.

Construction is underway on an untouched, private 12.4 hectare island, a 45-minute transfer by sea plane from Male and 30 minutes by speedboat from the recently opened domestic airport on Baa Atoll. Read more
