Emirates and Air Canada expand codeshares

DUBAI, UAE, 21 August 2023: Emirates and Air Canada have extended their codeshare partnership to include flights to and from Montréal following the launch of services to Québec’s largest city in July. 

Emirates customers can now plan travel between 11 of the most popular domestic points beyond Montréal and destinations on Emirates’ expansive network, utilising both airlines’ services conveniently on a single ticket. 

The expanded network of Canadian points included in the codeshare partnership between Emirates and Air Canada now extends to 11 destinations via Montréal, with an additional 69 points accessible from the gateway, on an interline basis.

Tickets are available via emirates.com and preferred travel agencies. 

The codeshare partnership between Emirates and Air Canada enables customers to enjoy flexibility and choice with smooth connections via Canada’s two largest cities to points such as Halifax, Edmonton, Ottawa and Calgary – perfect for leisure and business travellers or those visiting family or friends. 

From Toronto, Emirates’ customers can travel to 19 points whilst enjoying codeshare benefits and an extra 100, made possible through an interline arrangement. Customers from Canadian cities can easily connect to Emirates’ services in Montréal or Toronto to travel to exciting destinations across Asia, Africa and the Middle East via the airline’s hub in Dubai. 

On its flights to and from Toronto, Emirates offers daily services to Dubai onboard its popular flagship A380 aircraft. The world’s largest international airline also operates seven weekly flights between Montréal and Dubai, utilising its other widebody aircraft – the Boeing 777 – enabling passengers to plan their travel itineraries to global destinations with seamless connectivity.

Avoid five foods before heading off on holiday

SINGAPORE, 21 August 2023: Travellers should avoid certain foods before they travel to guarantee plain sailing and a comfortable trip.

Travel experts at Panache Cruises have researched the foods most likely to bring on feelings of travel sickness, so travellers can steer clear.

Giving a wide berth to greasy or acidic foods before you travel will help you keep hydrated and not succumb to nausea.

Fried foods can cause heartburn due to their high-fat content and also tend to be high in sodium, leading to fluid retention and causing bloat or swelling in your body.

Acidic food such as coffee, orange juice and bacon are slow to digest and, in the case of coffee, can speed up dehydration.

Fast Food

It might be tempting to grab some fast food whilst stuck in an airport or waiting at the dock to board a ship, but these greasy foods can cause heartburn because of their high-fat content. Fast food also has high sodium levels, which can cause bloating or swelling because of fluid retention – this can mean some serious discomfort whilst travelling, especially with air pressure.

Alcohol

For many travellers having a pint or a glass of wine is a celebratory start to their holiday – but drinking alcohol before and during travelling might not be such a good idea. The body will quickly become dehydrated and cause a sudden urge to use the bathroom, which could be inconvenient when boarding a flight or ship. Drinking alcohol can also mean causing unwarranted disruption for other passengers because of lowered inhibitions.

Coffee

For most of us, coffee is the answer for those early starts ahead of our vacations. Still, caffeine can cause involuntary jittery movements – not something anyone wants whilst sitting in one position on a long-haul trip. Coffee will also speed up the body’s dehydration which is particularly uncomfortable when travelling.

Orange Juice

Orange juice is known for its acidity, so avoiding drinking before travelling is best. Particularly when flying, heartburn can be brought on by the cabin pressure – and drinking acidic orange juice is no favour. The drink’s vitamin C can also weaken the bladder, meaning more discomfort and treks to the bathroom.

Cruciferous veggies

Vegetables in the cruciferous family – like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and kale- tick the boxes for health benefits for the body, which most of us will want before travelling. But these veggies can make the body bloated and gassy because of the fibre and raffinose packed inside them, which can be very unpleasant when travelling.

SriLanka starts Jeddah flights

SINGAPORE, 21 August 2023: SriLankan Airlines relaunched flights between Colombo and Jeddah on 15 August 2023, flying a group of ‘Umrah’ Pilgrims from Tiruchirappalli, India, on the inaugural flight to Jeddah, the gateway to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. 

SriLankan is now offering three weekly flights from Colombo to Jeddah every Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday with seamless connections for Indian ‘Umrah’ pilgrims travelling from the cities of Trichy, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, Chennai and Madurai. 

Flight UL281 departs Colombo at 1425 and arrives in Jeddah at 1810.
Flight UL282 departs Jeddah at 1945 and arrives in Colombo at 0405 the following morning.

Flight time is five hours 32 minutes. The airline flies an A300-200 on the route configured with 18 flatbed seats in business class and 251 seats in economy.

The airline operates daily from Colombo to Dammam and Riyadh, extending the option of convenient connections to Saudi Arabia for Indian travellers.

DidaTravel bookings surpass the pre-Covid marker

HONG KONG, 21 August 2023: DidaTravel, a tech-driven global travel distribution company, reports international hotel bookings for the summer season (1 June to 31 August 31) have already surpassed 2019 levels by an impressive 93% hike compared to the same period in 2019. 

This booking surge signals DidaTravel’s expansion and growth globally and the strong recovery of the wider hotel sector, including, most recently, the APAC region.

Summer bookings reach new heights

When looking at reservations made for August through the DidaTravel platform, they have skyrocketed by 214% year-on-year, indicating a strong rebound in travel demand.

Meanwhile, hotel bookings for European destinations witnessed a remarkable 123% increase in reservations year-on-year for the June, July and August arrival periods. Destinations in the APAC, Middle East & Africa, and the Americas have seen growth rates of 68%, 65%, and 16%, respectively, contributing to the global recovery.

Average daily accommodation rate (ADR) on the rise

As a global average, the ADR has increased by 35% year-on-year, surpassing 2019 levels by 7%.

However, APAC and the Americas are trailing just below 2019 levels, with ADR year-on-year increases of 55% and 14%, respectively. 

Europe and the Middle East & Africa have exceeded 2019 levels, with ADR increases of 29% and 23% yearly, showcasing a strong recovery in these regions.

Extended Advance Booking Window

With the relaxation of travel restrictions in APAC, travellers are displaying increased confidence to book hotels further in advance – rising to an average of 23 days from just 10 during the same period last year and even surpassing the 21 days in 2019.

Tourism Malaysia networks in Cambodia

SIEM REAP, Cambodia, 21 August 2023: Tourism Malaysia improved its international marketing efforts by organising tourism seminars in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap last week.  

The business-to-business (B2B) networking sessions took place from 7 to 12 August 2023, reaching 80 Cambodian travel agents and local media in Phnom Penh and 35 Cambodian travel agents in Siem Reap Province.

The networking sessions and business lunch events were led by 14 Malaysian travel trade partners, travel agents, hotels and resorts, and tourism product owners.

Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director of International Promotions Division (Southeast Asia),  Zalina Ahmad, led the delegation. Among the attendees in the seminar included representatives from Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Lanmei Airlines Cambodia, AnCasa Hotels & Resorts, Grand Ion Delemen Hotel Genting Highlands, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Johor Bahru, ibis Hotel Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Mercure Kuala Lumpur Shaw Parade, Asia Delight Tours & Travel, Columbia Leisure, E Like Travel & Tours, GIT Tours & Travels, Harvest Vacations and Marine Discovery Holidays.

Also present were the Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia Datuk Eldeen Husaini Mohd Hashim  Cambodia Association Travel Agents (CATA) president Chhay Sivlin as guests of honours in the Phnom Penh session.

Tourism Malaysia Director-General Dato Dr Ammar Abd Ghapar said: “We are working closely with the local travel agents in Cambodia and appreciate their continuous support in promoting Malaysia. With more upcoming direct flights connecting Cambodia to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is undoubtedly the preferred choice of travel destination in this region.

“Moreover, Tourism Malaysia’s marketing representative in Cambodia, Pot Rany, supports new travel package initiatives to bring more Cambodian tourists to Malaysia. Hence, we hope to inspire and motivate our counterparts to confidently promote and sell Malaysia and thus succeed in their business in return.”

Malaysia targets 16.1 million international tourist arrivals with MYR 49.2 billion in tourism receipts this year. In 2022, Cambodian tourists recorded 39,823 arrivals to Malaysia, and the positive momentum continued to register 18,118 visits in the first quarter of this year.

SAS returns to Bangkok

SINGAPORE, 21 August 2023: SAS will resume flights from Copenhagen to Bangkok but only during the northern hemisphere winter timetable from October to March.

The seasonal flights will commence on 30 October 2023 and end on 31 March 2024. SAS schedules three flights weekly on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday using an Airbus A350 departing Copenhagen. 

The Airbus A350 has 300 seats and offers three classes – SAS Business, SAS Plus and SAS Go.

SAS ended flights to Thailand nine years ago after decades of serving Bangkok. Its links to Thai aviation go back to 1960 when it played a pivotal role in the founding of Thai Airways International in 1960 and held a 30% stake in the airline until 1977. 

As part of the Winter 2023/2024 programme, SAS will also continue its three-times-weekly services to Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Shanghai (PVG).

SINGAPORE, 18 August 2023: The 2023 Adventure Travel Industry Snapshot report recently released by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) saw APAC countries gaining more consumer recognition. 

The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) will host its first-ever Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) in Asia, convening in Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido in Japan, from 11 to 14 September 2023.

The report noted Japan was the third most popular destination for adventure travel clients globally, and Indian travellers were the fifth largest source market of adventure travellers, the first time either country has made it into the top five markets.

The Adventure Travel Industry Snapshot report, now in its 17th year, tracks the current state of the adventure travel industry, using data from ATTA’s community of tour operators, who are invited to share information about their business operations as well as trends they are experiencing with respect to traveller demographics, destinations, and activities.

Demonstrating the value of adventure travel, the report shows that the respondents’ most popular itinerary is priced at a median of USD3,000 (for eight nights), 76% of which is spent with local suppliers (USD2,280 on average). These are the highest numbers the survey has seen to date, highlighting the importance and value of community engagement and forward-looking environmental practices in travel experiences.

The most popular adventure trip activities worldwide were hiking, wildlife viewing, and cycling. The top trending activities for Asia, in particular, are cultural activities, hiking, culinary, cycling (specifically mountain and/or non-paved surfaces), and photography (wildlife and nature). Cultural activities scored highest for Asia, signalling a strong preference from travellers to experience the diversity of Asian cultures whilst visiting the region.

Going into 2023, Oceania is one of the hottest regions to show a positive change of interest for bookings, with the India/South Asia and Southeast Asia regions also seeing a growth in interest.

“It’s exciting to see an explosion of interest around Japan as an adventure travel destination, particularly ahead of our Adventure Travel World Summit, which will be held in Sapporo, Japan, from 11 to 14 September,” said ATTA director of research & sustainability Heather Kelly.

“It’s also a wake-up call for those outside of the region to see that Indian travellers reach the top five in source markets, challenging the stereotype that Asian travellers aren’t adventure travellers.”

Oceania lines up 2024 to 2025 sailings

SINGAPORE, 18 August 2023: Oceania Cruises, a culinary and destination-focused cruise line, is offering 100 sailings in Tahiti and the Caribbean in 2024 and 2025, charting lesser-known coastlines and taking travellers to boutique ports and off-the-beaten-track islands.

Resort World Cruises launches Japan sailings

HONG KONG, 18 August 2023: Resorts World Cruises launches its six-day/five-night Naha-Miyakojima cruise aboard the Resorts World One, which will depart every two weeks from Hong Kong, starting 1 October 2023.

CX wins back passengers in July

HONG KONG, 18 August 2023: Cathay Pacific released its traffic figures for July 2023 this week, showing that together with HK Express, the Cathay Group as a whole surpassed the milestone of having carried more than two million passengers in a month for the first time since the pandemic.

Cathay Pacific carried 1,744,374 passengers last month, an increase of 693.8% compared with July 2022. The month’s revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) increased 421.6% year-on-year. Passenger load factor increased by 16 percentage points to 89.3%, while capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), increased by 328.2% year on year. In the first seven months of 2023, the number of passengers carried increased by 1,622% against an 818.9% increase in capacity and a 1,149% increase in RPKs, compared with the same period for 2022.

Chief Customer and Commercial Officer Lavinia Lau noted: “July marks the beginning of the traditional summer peak for passenger travel, and we are very pleased to see that demand has been strong. We continued to add more capacity for our customers – 11% more compared with June – primarily on our North America, Europe, Japan and Southeast Asia services catering to the rising demand for visiting friends and relatives (VFR) and leisure travel.

“Long-haul flights to and from Hong Kong were especially popular among VFR travellers in the first half of the month. Subsequently, with the start of the school holidays in mid-July, there was a substantial increase in demand for popular short-haul destinations around Asia. All this resulted in July having a nearly 90% load factor.

Outlook
“Looking ahead, the strong travel demand seen in July will continue through the rest of the summer, peaking in August said Lau. “We continue to make good progress in our journey to rebuild the Cathay Group and connectivity at our home hub and, as a group comprising Cathay Pacific and HK Express, we are now close to 60% of pre-pandemic passenger flight capacity levels.”

The airline group is on track to reach 70% of pre-pandemic passenger flight capacity covering 80 destinations by the end of this year and forecasts it will reach 100% by the end of 2024.

On the customer experience side, the airline group welcomed guests back to its lounge in Taipei and previewed its all-new Business class experience, Aria Suite, which will arrive on long-haul Boeing 777-300ER flights in the second quarter of next year.

As an additional update following the group’s payment of the HKD1.5 billion deferred dividend on the HKD19.5 billion preference shares held by the Hong Kong SAR Government in June and announcement of its intention to pay all future preference shares dividends as they fall due, the group has paid the latest dividend of HKD292.5 million due on the preference shares on 14 August 2023.
