Banyan Tree Group rebrand chops the tree

SINGAPORE, 12 January 2024: After three decades of high-flying hospitality success, Banyan Tree Group is evolving its corporate umbrella brand by dropping the ‘Tree’ to become ‘Banyan Group’. 

In a media statement, the group said the “brand shift reflects the group’s evolution into multi-brand hospitality powerhouse.”  

Since 2019, the Banyan Tree Group has doubled its brand portfolio with properties in new destinations such as  Banyan Tree AlUla in Saudi Arabia, Garrya in Kyoto and Folio in Osaka, Japan, Dhawa in Ho Tram, Vietnam, Homm in Huzhou, China and Banyan Tree Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. 

2023 also marked a year of strong and steady business performance that has surpassed pre-pandemic levels.

Expansion continues in 2024

The Group’s first property in Cambodia will debut with Angsana Siem Reap.

Carnival brings back commission incentives

SINGAPORE, 12 January 2024: Carnival Cruise Line announced the return of its AMP Up Commission Challenge this week, empowering travel advisors to increase commission rates up to 15% throughout 2024 based on bookings made through 31 March 2024.

But the scheme that increases the commission rate for bookings made between 1 April and 31 August (based on meeting first-quarter performance targets) applies only to US, Canada and Puerto Rico travel agencies. 

“As we step into 2024, our travel agency partners are already on a trajectory of success. The AMP Up Challenge is designed as a catalyst to push that momentum even further, as it enables agents to harness their agency’s sales and proactively rise to higher commission tiers,” said Adolfo Perez, senior vice president of global sales and trade marketing for Carnival Cruise Line. “Since it’s Wave season, we encourage agents to seize the opportunity and enjoy the benefits for the rest of the year.”

Participating agencies must meet sales targets during the Wave booking period, January to March 2024, to qualify for higher commission levels between 11 and 15%. The higher commissions will be applied to bookings from 1 April 1 to 31 December 2024. 

To participate, travel advisors must register during the opt-in period until Wednesday, 31 January 2024. The program is open to US, Puerto Rico and Canada agencies that currently qualify for 11 to 15% commissions.

THAI boosts flights to Australia

BANGKOK, 12 January 2024: Thai Airways International has opened bookings for destinations that return to the Northern summer season timetable from 31 March to 31 October 2024.

Following an earlier announcement confirming the airline would resume flights to Milan and Oslo this July, the airline reports it will resume daily flights from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to Perth in Western Australia effective 31 March. It will deploy a Boeing 787-8 on the route. Departure times differ with a morning departure (0720) from Bangkok on four days and a midnight departure (0001) on three days.

Flights on the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi – Taipei Taoyuan route will increase from twice to three daily, using a mix of A320s, a 777-300ER, and A330-300.

Chinese airline launches flights to Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI, 12 January 2024: Juneyao Air will resume flights between Shanghai and Chiang Mai effective 20 January.

The airline schedules a daily flight using an A320neo departing Shanghai at 1835 and arriving in Chiang Mai at 2235. The return flight will depart Chiang Mai at 2335 and arrive in Shanghai at 0425 the following morning.

Juneyao Air will compete head-on with two other Chinese airlines on the Shanghai (PVG) – Chiang Mai (CNX) route. It serves the route with an A320neo configured with 158 seats.

China Eastern Airlines flies daily using an A320 configured with 158 seats ( eight first class). The flight departs Shanghai at 1010 and arrives in Chiang Mai at 1400.

Spring Airlines flies the route thrice weekly with an A320 configured with 180 all-economy seats. Flights depart Shanghai at 0805 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and arrive in Chiang Mai at 1135.

The average roundtrip fare on the route stood at USD450 during December, but it is likely to drop once the Juneyao flight is operational daily.

Airlines are hoping that the introduction of visa-exempt travel between China and Thailand for citizens of both countries will boost traffic on the direct routes between the two countries. Last year, provisional travel figures presented by Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports suggested around 3.5 million Chinese would travel to Thailand in 2023. The exact visitor arrival totals and accompanying data for the entire year have not been posted on the ministry’s website.

In related news, Juneyao Air confirmed it will increase flights to daily starting 18 January through to 25 March 25 on two routes to Thailand;  Shanghai-Phuket and Nanjing-Phuket.

SriLankan launches Direct Connect in India

SINGAPORE, 12 January 2024: SriLankan Airlines has begun the global rollout of its New Distribution Capability (NDC) agents booking portal SriLankan Direct Connect, starting with India.

The NDC platform is a breakthrough travel industry-supported programme by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) that sets the pace to transform the journey for airline distribution digitally.  

Adopting the technology via Sri Lankan Direct Connect allows the airline to form a powerful, direct retail and communication channel with agents and bypass traditional intermediary Global Distribution Systems to provide richer content, ancillary services and personalised offers.

“We are excited to become one of the first airlines in South Asia to introduce IATA’s NDC technology and enhance the overall booking experience for our agents. SriLankan Direct Connect is an intuitive application that will strengthen our direct distribution channel and bring value to travel agents and empower them to provide a superior service to our passengers,” stated SriLankan Airlines chief executive officer Richard Nuttall.

Agents who register for SriLankan Direct Connect will have all the fare options, ancillary products, free date changes and an incentive scheme for flown segments, among other benefits.

First launched in Sri Lanka in August 2023, SriLankan Airlines will be progressively extending Direct Connect across its network in the coming months following the global kick-off in India. Agents can sign up for SriLankan Direct Connect using the Agent Registration link on the airline’s home page.

Tripadvisor names best of the best

SINGAPORE, 12 January 2024: Tripadvisor announced this week its first Travelers’ Choice® Award for 2024: the Best of the Best Destinations. 

Tripadvisor’s Best of the Best Destinations span seven categories for 2024: Top Destinations (formerly Popular Destinations), Trending Destinations, Culture Destinations, Food Destinations, Nature Destinations and two new subcategories this year, Honeymoon Destinations and Sustainable Destinations.

2024 Travel Outlook

Tripadvisor research indicates that travel is set to see sustained momentum in 2024. Those seeking help with travel planning this year can draw inspiration from the Best of the Best Destination lists, with guidance from the global travel community. Winning destinations are largely determined by an analysis of Tripadvisor reviews and ratings from a recent 12-month period. 

Top Destinations

The title Top Destination in the World for the third year running goes to Dubai, solidifying its position as Tripadvisor reviewers’ favourite destination, followed in second place by Bali, Indonesia. Two destinations in Vietnam, Hanoi and  Hoi An, take the fourth and 10th places on the top 10 chart.

Tripadvisor head of editorial Sarah Firshein said: “Winners like Dubai, Tokyo, Paris, and Marrakech indicate that our community has an unbridled appetite for destinations with vibrant arts-and-culture scenes, top-notch restaurants, and seemingly limitless attractions and experiences. 

It’s also great to see a rebound on long-haul trips to Asia, with the region having fully opened up post-pandemic; as Tripadvisor’s Trending Destinations list shows, travellers are keen to get out there and explore with gusto.”

Trending for 2024

With emerging travel hotspots for 2024, Asia comes out top, securing the top five places in the World’s Trending Destinations – which identifies places that have seen the greatest year-over-year growth in interest – and making up an impressive eight out of the top 10 destinations. 

Tokyo, Japan, leads in the top slot for 2024, followed by Seoul, South Korea, in second place and Halong Bay, Vietnam, in third place. Central and South America are the only other regions to make the top 10, with Bogota, Colombia in sixth place and Alajuela, Costa Rica in eighth place.

A new Sustainable Destinations subcategory recognises winners from around the World deemed to have strong commitments to sustainability. 

While Europe has the lion’s share of environmentally responsible cities in the top 10, with Copenhagen, Denmark, in first place, Asia Pacific is also well represented, with Singapore and Melbourne lauded for their efforts.

How to behave in Japan

SINGAPORE, 11 January 2024: January is typically the busiest month for people looking to book holidays and experts at JRPass have compiled their top tips to help tourists navigate common etiquette and practices when visiting Japan.

When visiting a different country, you’ll want to learn key common phrases to help you get by. But it’s not just language skills that visitors should think about ahead of their trip, as etiquette and expectations can also vary greatly as you travel from country to country – and Japan is no exception.

Tips on behaving when visiting Japan

Covid Etiquette and Regulations

Although other countries had relaxed rules around Covid some time ago, it wasn’t until earlier this year that Japan’s government significantly eased Covid rules and mask guidelines. Now, visitors to the country no longer need to provide a clear Covid test or proof of vaccination before entry into Japan.

That said, when it comes to masks, although there is currently no mandate from the government, it is still common to see many people in Japan wearing masks, especially in crowded places and on public transport.

Ultimately, it is up to each individual how they choose to behave in regard to Covid-19 measures, and there is a mixture of attitudes and behaviours across the population in Japan.

Greetings and Bowing

The customs for greetings in Japan look noticeably different than those in most Western countries, and bowing is the most common Japanese greeting, ranging from a nod of the head to a deep bend at the waist. 

Bowing is not one size fits all in Japan: there are different types for different situations depending on context, social status, age, and more. For example, a bow of the head (similar to a nod) may suffice in more casual situations.

If you aren’t sure what type of bow is required in a given situation, don’t panic. Tourists are not expected to know the intricacies of the bowing customs in Japan. You will be able to follow suit with those around you, and after some time, you will likely be choosing the appropriate bow without even thinking about it.

Restaurant Culture and Table Manners

Although eating out in Japan is a different experience from traditional Western restaurants, you will pick up the customs and learn as you go. However, here are some simple pointers to help get you started.

Many Japanese restaurants will have traditional seating, consisting of low tables and cushions on the tatami floor. Take off your shoes before stepping onto the tatami floor, and avoid stepping on any other cushions.

Before the meal, a hot steamed towel (“oshibori”) is offered and should be used to clean your hands (not your face).

It is common to wait until everyone has received their food and then start the meal with the phrase “itadakimasu” (“I gratefully receive”).

When eating from a small bowl, picking this up with your hand and bringing it closer to your mouth is good manners.

Important chopstick rules

Never stab your food.

Don’t place chopsticks upright in the bowl (this ritual is reserved for funerals).

Use the opposite end of your chopsticks to serve yourself from a communal dish.

Don’t point at things (dishes or people) with your chopsticks.

Etiquette in the Street

Avoid loitering and blocking the flow of traffic, especially on busy streets. If you must stop, move to an area that will not disturb the flow. This is especially important if you have lots of luggage taking up space.

It’s considered bad manners to eat or drink whilst walking in Japan. Instead, stop and take a break while eating; many places (including many convenience stores) have designated places for you to stop and eat. 

This rule also applies to smoking Whilst walking: it is common courtesy to go to a designated smoking area, as this is the most respectful to those around you. 

Keeping the streets clean is a point of pride in Japan, and you should hang on to all your rubbish until you find a bin or get home. Smokers often even carry portable ashtrays (available at convenience stores) to dispose of cigarette butts where cigarette bins are not available.

Whilst it may be tempting in today’s photo-obsessed culture, refrain from approaching geishas and maikos for selfies in the street. They are working and often hurrying from one engagement to another, and as such, it is very disrespectful to hold them up to get a photo.

Another golden rule to remember in Japan; don’t blow your nose in public, as it is seen as very rude. 

Travel & Public Transport

Travelling by train or via the subway system is the most common method of getting around in Japan, and both etiquette and rules surrounding train travel in Japan can be quite different from what you’d experience in other countries. 

Here are the key things to remember when using Japan’s train systems.

When moving around, always follow the traffic flow – don’t worry, there tend to be arrows or signs to help point you in the right direction.

Politeness is key when travelling by train, so ensuring you’re paying attention when walking around, waiting politely to board the train, and generally being observant of your surroundings is vital.

If you are occupying priority seating, you must give up your seat and respect the rules should someone elderly, disabled, or pregnant board the train.

While taking phone calls or playing on your phone is widely accepted in some countries, this is certainly not the case in Japan. As such, you should keep your phone on silent, avoid taking calls when onboard and keep any noise to a minimum.

Much like talking on the phone, conversations with your travel companions should also be done at a low volume level.

Eating and drinking are also only widely accepted if travelling via the bullet train. 

Being mindful of others, especially regarding space, is essential. You should only take up one seat on a train to accommodate your belongings.

Vistara celebrates anniversary

Special anniversary fares are open in all three cabin classes until 2359 hours on Thursday, 11 January 2024, for travel until 30 September 2024 (blackout dates apply).

Asian cities, including Taipei and Phnom Penh, emerge as the new hot spots for two-wheel tours. Taiwan, Albania and Samoa are the countries that have seen the biggest jump in interest for bike tours.

Adventure travel company Explore Worldwide has revealed this year’s trending destinations for bike tours worldwide in its new Learn To Ride Report.

Based on Google search data from the last two years, Explore’s research has identified the destinations experiencing the most significant increase in online searches compared to the previous year. The study also reveals the countries that are surging in popularity among those itching to see the world on two wheels.

These are the emerging hot spots for bike tours worldwide, from urban bike meccas to serene countryside escapes.  

The World’s Top Trending Bike Tour Destinations

1. Taipei, Taiwan: Taipei, soaring to the top with an astonishing 946% surge in biking interest, is a cyclist’s paradise. The city intertwines modern urban landscapes with tranquil bike paths.
