Sarawak hosts neighbourly networking

KUCHING, Sarawak, 23 September 2024: The Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), in collaboration with Business Events Sarawak, Tourism Malaysia Brunei, Royal Brunei Airlines, and the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office Singapore (STATOS), successfully hosted the Brunei, Singapore, and Sarawak Travel Connect Business Networking Session at the Sheraton Hotel Kuching last week.

The event followed a successful halal familiarisation trip and marked a pivotal moment in strengthening regional tourism partnerships and creating new business opportunities between Sarawak and its neighbouring markets.

STB CEO, Puan Sharzede Datu Hj Salleh Askor, delivers her opening remarks at the Sarawak Travel Connect Business Networking Session at Sheraton Hotel Kuching.

Both Singapore and Brunei rank among Sarawak’s top five countries of visitor arrivals, underscoring their significance in driving the state’s tourism growth. From January to July 2024, visitor arrivals from Brunei surged by 58%, while Singapore recorded a 32% increase compared to 2019 – both surpassing pre-pandemic years. Travellers from both countries strongly prefer authentic local cuisine, reflecting a growing appetite for genuine cultural experiences.

With many travellers from these markets, Sarawak is positioning itself as an accessible and inclusive halal destination. Hotels in Kuching, particularly in the city’s ‘golden triangle’ — such as Pullman Kuching, Hilton Kuching, The Waterfront Hotel Kuching, and Riverside

Majestic Hotel are halal-certified. This certification reflects Sarawak’s commitment to hygiene and ethical practices that appeal to many travellers.

With halal dining options available throughout the state, these efforts ensure that travellers can confidently explore Sarawak’s rich culinary and cultural diversity, knowing their needs are prioritised with care and integrity. By emphasising inclusivity and accessibility, Sarawak reinforces its reputation as a welcoming and diverse destination that caters to all.

Kuching, Malaysia’s first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, epitomises Sarawak’s blend of cultural heritage and diverse cuisine. Shaped by 34 ethnic groups, the city offers a unique gastronomic journey that mirrors its multicultural essence. Halal-certified hotels and restaurants further enhance this inclusivity, allowing travellers to enjoy Sarawak’s celebrated cuisine fully.

Beyond its culinary appeal, Kuching is also a World Craft City, recognised by the World Crafts Council (WCC) for its intricate beadwork, woodcarving, rattan weaving, and traditional fabric weaving — crafts that tell the story of the land and its people. Visitors can immerse themselves in these authentic cultural experiences, deepening their appreciation of Sarawak’s vibrant heritage.

Sarawak is equally distinguished by its natural wonders, boasting two UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Niah National Park and Mulu National Park — making it the first state in Malaysia to achieve this recognition. Complementing these globally acclaimed sites is the Sarawak Delta Geopark, recognised as Malaysia’s sixth national geopark, underscoring the region’s diverse geological and ecological significance.

MICE City of Busan Confirmed as Host for World Congress on Computational Mechanics 2028

BUSAN, 23 September 2024: Busan will host the World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM), 2028, a major international academic conference that will bring together over 3,000 experts in computational mechanics from around the world.

ⓒBusan Tourism Organization

WCCM is a biennial conference organized by the International Association for Computational Mechanics. It serves as a platform for sharing the latest research and innovations in computational solid mechanics and computational fluid dynamics through discussions and lectures. WCCM 2028 will take place at Busan’s BEXCO from July 16 to July 21, 2028. The six-day event is expected to attract more than 3,000 attendees from around the world.

Busan’s Efforts to Land WCCM 2028

ⓒBusan Tourism Organization

Last year, following the joint marketing efforts of the Busan Tourism Organization and BEXCO, and after internal discussions within the Korean Society for Computational Mechanics, Busan was selected as a candidate city to host WCCM 2028. Since then, the WCCM 2028 Bid Committee, composed of prominent experts in the field, worked diligently both in Korea and abroad to bring the event to Busan. Their efforts finally bore fruit. This March, during the on-site inspection, Busan showcased its excellent infrastructure and growth potential. As a result, in July, Busan was selected as the final host city for WCCM 2028, beating out other candidate cities such as Shanghai and Singapore.

A MICE City Ready for the WCCM

ⓒBusan Tourism Organization

Behind Busan’s successful bid to host WCCM 2028 was the administrative and financial support from the city government and the Busan Tourism Organization. In January, Busan emphasized its commitment to future digital technology by designating “digital tech” as one of its nine strategic industries, leveraging the city’s unique regional characteristics. This highlighted the city’s deep understanding of the importance of computational mechanics. In alignment with Busan’s strategic industries, such as AI and smart cities, the city spared no effort in supporting its bid for WCCM 2028, laying the foundation for its success.

The successful bid for WCCM 2028 is particularly meaningful as it was achieved through the combined efforts of both the public and private sectors. The event is expected to generate an economic impact of KRW 13.8 billion and create over 100 jobs. In addition, the international technological exchanges that will take place during the congress are expected to play a major role in advancing the field of computational mechanics in Korea. The latest WCCM research and technologies have the potential to contribute to ship and aircraft designs, quantum computing, urban infrastructure optimization, and disaster prediction and response. These innovations are likely to positively influence the development of a diverse range of industries, including Busan’s strategic industries.

On to the Next Stage for WCCM 2028

ⓒBusan Tourism Organization

Busan was officially designated as the host city for 2028 at WCCM 2024, which was held in Vancouver, Canada. The Busan Tourism Organization will attend WCCM 2026 in Munich, Germany to further promote Busan as a premier MICE destination. Having passed the bid stage, Busan has entered the next phase of preparations to successfully host the WCCM in 2028. There is already growing anticipation for the computational mechanics festival that will blossom in Busan in four short years.

Other activities include various joint promotions between TAT and China’s leading travel platforms between this month and December, the Chinese Passport Special Deals from now until the end of next month, and two Thailand-China friendship caravan trips scheduled between this month and the next.

TAT has set a target for the Nihao Month festival to materialise into 250,000 arrivals from China during the upcoming Golden Week. Special events and promotions would help generate about 500 million reaches and further enhance the positive image of Thailand as the preferred destination for Chinese tourists.

From 1 January to 8 September 2024, Thailand welcomed 4,895,707 tourists from China, maintaining its position as the country’s top source of international visitors. This success is bolstered by a significant increase in flight capacity, with 8,588,274 seats available in 2024 – a 65% jump from the previous year, and the mutual visa exemption policy by the two countries.

Along with other key supporting factors such as the growth of new high-quality tourist groups, and TAT’s promotional activities like the “Amazing Thailand Road Show to China, Thailand is optimistic about reaching its ambitious target of 7.3 million Chinese visitors in 2024.
