Langkawi beach hosts music festival

Langkawi will play host to an inaugural music event this December; the Langkawi International Island Music Festival 2017.

To be hosted  Saturday and Sunday, 23 and 24 December, the event features both local and international bands.

It will cover a wide variety of music genres, and is expected to attract more than 10,000 visitors. Read more

Rainforest festival spotlights Welsh music

KUCHING, 7 July 2017: Music lovers attending the 20th Rainforest World Music Festival will be entertained by a Welsh music legend.

The annual festival, considered the top World Music event in Asia, will be staged on the weekend  14 to 16 July.

The 2016 Rainforest World Music Festival recorded a staggering 18,340 people in attendance over the festival’s three days. The gate tally represented an increase of 2% over the previous year. Ticket sales for the festival also increased 14%. Read more

HCMC to introduce canal music

HO CHI MINH CITY, 27 June 2017: Evening musical performances will be staged, later this year, on a canal barge in Nha Be District, Ho Chi Minh City.

Tuoi Tre News reported the show, proposed by Tai Nguyen Company, the developer of the Kenton Node Hotel Complex in Nha Be’s Phuoc Kien Commune, has received the go-ahead from the municipal administration.

The stage will be constructed on the hull of a barge anchored in the Dia Canal near around 10 km south of the centre of Ho Chi Minh City.  The audience will accommodated in area on land adjacent to the barge. Read more

CHICAGO, 9 June 2017: A violinist accused United Airlines of rough treatment after she refused to check her fragile 18th century instrument as luggage, another potential black mark to the US carrier after an infamous passenger dragging incident.

Yennifer Correia was travelling Sunday from Houston, Texas to a music rehearsal in Columbia, Missouri, when ticket agents told her that she could not carry her circa late-1700s Italian violin onboard the plane, Correia’s attorney Phil MacNaughton told AFP on Wednesday. Read more

Street musicians gather in HCMC

HO CHI MINH CITY, 5 April 2017: Ho Chi Minh City authorities intend to serenade tourists with a music street in the city’s downtown district.

Tuoi Tre News reported the project, created by the administration of District 1, is keen to strike the first note by the end of the month. It still has to jump legal hurdles on entertainment laws for public places and could face opposition from local communities if they are not impressed with the repertoire.

The city’s District 1 deputy chairwoman, Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, was quoted saying the chosen street will give local artists a place to play and entertain residents and tourists. It has been suggested the first street performances could begin as early as 28 April. Read more

HCMC brings music to its streets

HO CHI MINH CITY, 14 February 2017: Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 administration is considering a proposal to add musical entertainment on the city’s downtown streets.

Local media reported the proposal calls for music streets to be located on the parallel Han Thuyen and Alexandre de Rhodes streets.

They will encourage local musicians to entertain residents and tourists and make the city more enjoyable for visitors. Read more

Phuket Food & Music Festival

PHUKET, 23 January 2017: Laguna Phuket is promoting its latest venture “Laguna Phuket Food & Music Festival (LPFMF)” that will be hosted at the west coast resort complex, Friday 3 to Sunday 5 March 2017.

Organisers said the inaugural festival will heighten Phuket’s status as a “City of Gastronomy”.

The island gained UNESCO recognition in 2015. Read more

Laos to host music fest

VIENTIANE, 11 November 2016: Laos will organise an international music festival “Vang Vieng Music Fest 2016” in Vang Vieng district, Vientiane province,  16 to 17 December.

The festival organised by Smart Event Organisers and Indee Records, in cooperation with the authorities of Vang Vieng district is now in its second year.

The festival venue will be in front of the iconic Lom cave. The festival’s aim is to promote a tourism focused on culture and art, rather than the  town’s raunchy image presented in the past. Read more

STB promotes rainforest music fest

SINGAPORE, 1 November 2016: Sarawak Tourism Board  promoted its famous Rainforest World Music Festival, during ITB Asia, late last month. The festival celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2017.

The 20th installment of the Rainforest World Music Festival will be hosted at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Damai, 14 to 16 July 2017.

According to STB officials attending ITB Asia there are plans to make the festival celebration bigger than ever to mark the 20th anniversary. Read more

KUCHING, 13 August 2015: African music made the long trip to the Rainforest World Music Festival enchanting an audience of around 6,500 people, nightly, on the festival’s centre stage last weekend.

This year’s festival had a billing of 24 bands from around the world, but it was the group calling themselves Ndima, which represents the people of the Aka Pygmies from Congo Brazzaville, that enthralled the mainly Asian audience.

Ndima presented traditional African music that gave the audience an insight into their unique endangered culture.
