Cruises boost GHA loyalty points

HONG KONG, 28 September 2023: Global Hotel Alliance (GHA), a grouping of independent hotel brands, is taking its loyalty programme, GHA DISCOVERY, to the high seas after entering a landmark partnership with Regent Seven Seas Cruises (Regent), a luxury cruise line, based in Miami, Florida.

This exclusive agreement marks the first time a cruise line has partnered with GHA, bringing together two leading luxury brands in the travel sector.

GHA DISCOVERY members, with access to 800 hotels, operated by 40 hotel brands in 100 countries, are rewarded with the programme’s currency; DISCOVERY Dollar, equal to USD1.

Jail term for illegal travel agent

SINGAPORE, 28 September 2023: The Singapore Tourism Board reported this week that State Courts had handed out a prison sentence on an individual who had conducted unlicensed travel agent activities in 2019.

The STB statement concluded that Singaporean national Rasman Bin Saridin (alias Rasman) has been convicted in the State Courts for carrying on the business of a travel agent without a valid travel agent licence in contravention of Section 6(1) of the Travel Agents Act. 

He was also convicted of offences under the Penal Code. Rasman faced 22 charges and was convicted and sentenced on five charges. He will serve a sentence of 11 months and two weeks imprisonment for contravening the Travel Agents Act and offences under the Penal Code and Bankruptcy Act. 

The remaining 17 charges were taken into consideration for the purpose of sentencing.

STB’s action goes back to a complaint from a consumer in November 2019 that an Umrah travel package he paid for had not been fulfilled. 

Investigations revealed that Rasman had conducted unlicensed travel agent activities in 2019, during which he sold religious Umrah travel packages affecting 56 individuals and collected payments amounting to more than SGD79,000. STB also established that Rasman failed to fulfil the Umrah trips, having already collected payments.

STB’s media statement concluded it “takes a serious view of those who engage in unlicensed travel agent activities and will not hesitate to take action to protect consumers’ interests and uphold the reputation of Singapore’s tourism sector.”

Under Section 6(2) of the Travel Agents Act, any person found guilty of carrying on the business of a travel agent without a valid travel agent licence faces a maximum fine of SGD25,000 and/or up to two years imprisonment.

“The public is advised to exercise due diligence when making travel arrangements, such as only purchasing their travel packages from licensed travel agents and purchasing travel insurance to protect themselves against unforeseen circumstances.

Air Canada buys Dreamliners

SINGAPORE, 27 September 2023: Air Canada has placed a firm order with Boeing for 18 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft, with deliveries of the new aircraft scheduled to begin in Q4 2025, with the last aircraft scheduled for delivery in Q1 2027.  

They will replace older, less efficient wide-body aircraft in the Air Canada fleet. The agreement also includes options for another 12 Boeing 787-10 aircraft, which will provide flexibility for growth to meet future customer demand.

Air Canada currently operates 30 787-9 and eight 787-8 versions of the Dreamliner, with two more 787-9 aircraft scheduled for delivery from a previous order. The 787-10 is the largest model of the Dreamliner family and can carry more than 330 customers depending on the seat configuration. According to Boeing, the 787-10 has up to 25 per cent lower fuel emissions per seat than the aircraft it replaces.

Fleet Renewal

The acquisition of the new aircraft is part of an ongoing fleet renewal programme at Air Canada, with the airline continuing to take delivery of new Airbus A220 aircraft, as well as plans to acquire 28 extra-long range (XLR) versions of the Airbus A321neo aircraft, also beginning in 2025. In addition, as previously announced, Air Canada has finalised a purchase agreement for 30 ES-30 electric-hybrid aircraft under development by Heart Aerospace due to enter service in 2028.

The Boeing 787-10 aircraft order announced with Boeing today substitutes a previously announced agreement to purchase two Boeing 777 freighter aircraft, and, as a result, Air Canada will no longer take delivery of the two freighters. Air Canada currently operates approximately 240 aircraft in its mainline and Air Canada Rouge fleet.

Saudi Arabia hosts World Tourism Day

SINGAPORE, 27 September 2023: More than 500 government officials and tourism industry experts representing 120 countries will attend the annual World Tourism Day celebrations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 27 to 28 September. 

Now in its 43rd year, the special day will see the tourism industry leaders do what they do best: talk about tourism at every opportunity while amassing grossly enlarged carbon footprints.

The breadth of high-level speakers showcases the collective impetus across the industry to celebrate the sector’s successes while exploring solutions to its most pressing challenges. 

Most of the speakers are part of a global circuit of talking globetrotters who have accumulated an inexcusable carbon footprint that far exceeds the value of what they are saying, mainly as it is repetitive and largely irrelevant to those struggling to keep their travel and hospitality enterprises above the breakeven benchmark.

The newest Pullman debuts in Singapore

SINGAPORE, 27 September 2023: Pullman Hotels & Resorts, a premium brand part of hospitality player Accor, confirms that Pullman Singapore Hill Street will start welcoming guests from 1 October 2023.

Developed and owned by EL Development Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based real estate company, the new five-star hotel will make its mark as the company’s first foray into hotels under the Pullman brand.

UNWTO tourism data tracks recovery progress

SINGAPORE, 27 September 2023: International tourism continues to recover from the worst crisis in its history as visitor arrivals reached 84% of pre-pandemic levels between January and July 2023, according to the latest data from UNWTO. 

The Middle East, Europe and Africa lead the global sector’s rebound, UNWTO reports.

The latest release of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer tracks the sector’s recovery over the course of 2023 up to the end of July. 

Barometer standouts

By the end of July, international tourist arrivals reached 84% of pre-pandemic levels.

700 million tourists travelled internationally between January and July 2023, 43% more than in the same months of 2022.

July was the busiest month, with 145 million international travellers recorded, about 20% of the seven-month total.

All world regions enjoyed strong rates of tourism recovery over the first seven months of 2023, driven by demand for international travel from several large source markets:

The Middle East reported the best results in January-July 2023, with arrivals 20% above pre-pandemic levels. The region remains the only one to exceed 2019 levels so far.

Europe, the world’s largest destination region, reached 91% of pre-pandemic levels, supported by robust intra-regional demand and travel from the US.

Africa recovered 92% of pre-crisis visitors this seven-month period, and the Americas 87%, according to available data.

In Asia and the Pacific, recovery accelerated to 61% of pre-pandemic arrival levels after opening many destinations and source markets at the end of 2022 and earlier this year.

Looking ahead

These results show international tourism remains well on track to reach 80% to 95% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023. Prospects for September-December 2023 point to continued recovery, according to the latest UNWTO Confidence Index, though at a more moderate pace following the peak travel season of June-August. These results will be driven by the still pent-up demand and increased air connectivity, particularly in the  Pacific, where recovery is still subdued.

The reopening of China and other Asian markets and destinations is expected to continue boosting travel both within the region and other parts of the world.

The challenging economic environment continues to be a critical factor in the effective recovery of international tourism in 2023, according to UNWTO’s Panel of Experts.

Persisting inflation and rising oil prices have translated into higher transport and accommodation costs. This could weigh on spending patterns over the remainder of the year, with tourists increasingly seeking value for money, travelling closer to home and making shorter trips.

Air Astana wins APEX award

SINGAPORE, 27 September 2023: The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) has honoured Air Astana with a five-star rating in the major airline category, with the ceremony being held in Los Angeles last week.

This is the ninth time that Air Astana has received an APEX award.

The APEX award was based on third-party passenger reviews undertaken in partnership with TripIt, the highest-rated travel app in the world. For the 2024 Award, passengers reviewed nearly one million flights on more than 600 airlines on a five-star scale covering five categories: seat comfort, in-flight service, food and beverages, entertainment system and Wi-Fi service.

“The APEX Award is a measure of the outstanding quality of Air Astana’s in-flight service, as well as a confirmation of continuous improvement of the customer experience,” said Air Astana, vice president of in-flight service Yelena Obukhova. “We are grateful to our colleagues for their professionalism and commitment to high service standards, as well as to our passengers for their positive feedback.”

AirAsia welcomes Chinese tourists

BANGKOK, 27 September 2023: AirAsia is supporting the Thai government’s visa-exemption policy for Chinese visitors with a flight promotion starting from only CNY199* per trip.

Bookings are open until 1 October 2023 for travel from 1 October 2023 to 31 March 2024 in the hopes of boosting tourism from China during National Day in October and Chinese New Year in February.

The visa-exemption policy allows Chinese tourists to enter Thailand without the need to request a visa in advance and will be in effect from 25 September 2023 to 29 February 2024, a total of five months. 

An AP report claimed that the government proposed the visa exemption measure due to concerns that Chinese tourists might be lower than expected this year because of strict visa requirements.  AP said the “target arrivals from China had been revised from 5 million to 3 million after a report from the state Tourism Authority of Thailand that around 1.4 million Chinese tourists came in the first six months.”

Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said the authorities were confident Chinese arrivals could hit 4 million to 5 million once the visa-exemption programme kicked in.

Thailand’s economy slumped during the pandemic as its colossal tourism industry virtually collapsed. The country received about 40 million visitors in 2019, and the government estimated they spent 1.9 trillion baht ($53.2 billion), which plummeted by more than 99% by 2021, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Srettha Thavisin, accompanied by Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool welcomed around 300 passengers on Thai AirAsia X flight XJ761 that arrived at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) from Shanghai, China, on Monday. 

At Don Mueang Airport, Chinese passengers on flight FD583 from Kunming to Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK) received a warm welcome.

Thai AirAsia chief executive officer Santisuk Klongchaiya noted expectations were high that Chinese visitors would increase significantly, especially during the year-end travel season, the National Day celebrations and during Chinese New Year in 2024, the latter two occasions that spur travel in the Chinese market to destinations in Southeast Asia.

AirAsia is already offering a variety of promotions on routes between China and Thailand. Thai AirAsia (FD) is presenting flights starting from only CNY199 per trip, available for booking up to 1 October 2023 for travel from 1 October 2023 to 31 March 2024. 

In addition, Thai AirAsia X (XJ) offers a fare of CNY299 on the Shanghai – Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) route.

Thai AirAsia currently operates 12 direct flights to 11 cities in China: Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Wuhan, Changsha, Hangzhou, Xi’an, Shantou and Beijing. Thai AirAsia X serves one route, Shanghai – Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi).
