KUCHING, 17 March 2026: The sounds of the rainforest are set to echo once again as the 29th edition of the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2026 returns to the iconic Sarawak Cultural Village from 26 to 28 June 2026.

Recognised as one of the world’s leading music festivals and recently ranked No. 8 in the Top 10 Festivals globally by the Transglobal World Music Chart, the internationally acclaimed festival will once again bring together artists, cultures, and audiences from around the world against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Santubong.

The Honourable Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak officiates the launch of Rainforest World Music Festival 2026.

Tickets for RWMF 2026 have been on sale since 13 March 2026, with Early Bird one-day passes priced at MYR235 and three-day passes at MYR635, available until 31 March 2026.

Festivalgoers can secure their tickets through the official festival website at rwmf.net or via the official ticketing platform Ticketmelon https://www.ticketmelon.com/sarawaktourismboard/rwmf

For added convenience, Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) options are also available through digital platforms such as Atome, Grab PayLater and Shopee PayLater, making it easier for festivalgoers to plan their visit.

With Early Bird passes expected to sell out quickly, visitors are encouraged to purchase their tickets early to avoid missing out on one of the region’s most celebrated music festivals.

“The Rainforest World Music Festival has, for many years, stood as one of Sarawak’s most distinctive cultural celebrations. It is more than a music festival; it is a gathering of cultures, a meeting of artistic traditions, and a platform where musicians from around the world come together to share stories through rhythm, melody, and heritage,” said YB Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry & Performing Arts, Sarawak.

Among the headliners is Dato’ M. Nasir, who will take the stage on 26 June 2026. A singer, songwriter, composer and producer with more than four decades of influence in the creative arts industry, Dato’ M. Nasir is known for his poetic lyrics and philosophical themes.

His works blend traditional Malay elements with contemporary sounds and have played a defining role in shaping the Malaysian music landscape.

Taking the stage on 27 June 2026 is The Commodores, featuring Thomas McClary, one of the defining bands of the funk and soul era, whose enduring hits such as Easy, Three Times a Lady, and Brick House continue to resonate with audiences across generations.

Completing the trio of headliners on 28 June 2026 is Incognito, the internationally renowned band led by founder Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick.

Known for their groove-based, rhythm-driven sound that blends soul, funk and world rhythms, the band is widely recognised for timeless hits such as Always There and Still a Friend of Mine.

More artists will be announced in the coming weeks, with the festival set to feature over 200 performers from 12 countries.

Beyond its spectacular evening concerts, RWMF is renowned for its immersive daytime experiences, with over 50 workshops, cultural demonstrations, and intimate mini sessions taking place across the festival grounds.

Festivalgoers can take part in interactive sessions where musicians share the stories behind their instruments and traditions while engaging audiences in spontaneous collaborations.

RWMF 2026 will also introduce a special BIMP-EAGA gastronomy showcase, highlighting the rich and diverse culinary traditions of the Borneo sub-region. Featuring flavours from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, the initiative brings together culinary partners from across the BIMP-EAGA region to present traditional dishes and regional specialities to festivalgoers.

The programme celebrates the region’s shared food heritage while offering visitors the opportunity to experience a wider range of authentic Borneo and regional flavours during the festival.

Sustainability remains a central pillar of the festival. Initiatives such as Green Ruai, Green Warriors, and the EcoGreen Planet tree-planting programme highlight the festival’s commitment to environmental responsibility and conservation.

Since 2023, more than 6,000 trees have been planted in conservation areas, including Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary, Bukit Lima Nature Reserve, and Piasau Nature Reserve, with the initiative set to reach 10,000 trees this year, ahead of the original 2027 target, in support of long-term environmental restoration efforts.

With its unique blend of world-class music, rainforest immersion, cultural authenticity, and sustainability initiatives, the Rainforest World Music Festival continues to strengthen Sarawak’s reputation as a leading destination for international festivals and cultural tourism.

THAI adds round-trip Paris repatriation flight

BANGKOK, 17 March 2026: Thai Airways International is adding a special round-trip flight between Bangkok and Paris on 18 March 2026 to help alleviate the situation of stranded passengers and meet increasing travel demand.

Tickets are available for booking. The flight details are as follows:

  • Route: Bangkok – Paris (round trip), operating on 18 March 2026
  • TG8690: BKK – CDG 0105 – 0750 (local time)
  • TG8691: CDG – BKK 1100 – 0430 (the following day)

The special flight is in addition to the airline’s scheduled daily service, which departs Paris at 1230 and arrives in Bangkok at 0600 the following morning. The airline deploys B777-300s with 339 seats on the route.

Meanwhile, the airline confirmed it is raising fares by 10% to 15% on routes to Europe to cover surging fuel costs and a longer flight path (northern route) that avoids the Middle East conflict. It is also reacting to overwhelming demand on European routes by implementing dynamic pricing to determine fare increases.

The round-trip fare for Thai Airways (THAI) on the Paris (CDG) to Bangkok (BKK) route is approximately THB45,846.
The round-trip fare for Thai Airways (THAI) on the Bangkok (BKK) to Paris (CDG) route is approximately THB 48,660.
On routes to Europe, economy fares on THAI flights range from THB32,900 to THB38,000.

Air France: Fares on the BKK-CDG route are slightly more competitive than Thai Airways, with fares starting around THB31,500. However, last-minute bookings for late March are trending closer to THB50,000.

Fuel Surcharges: THAI has already begun adjusting its fuel surcharges within the limits set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). The airline has indicated that if oil prices continue to climb, surcharges will rise.

Demand for direct flights to Europe has spiked, with cabin factors reaching 80 to 90% as travellers avoid connecting through Middle Eastern hubs. Additionally, rerouting flights to bypass conflict zones has slightly increased fuel consumption.

THAI is advising travellers to book early as fares may continue to rise.

Thai music project releases ‘Magical Mongolia’

BANGKOK, 17 March 2026: A new international music collaboration titled ‘Magical Mongolia’ has been released by the creators of The Isan Project, a musical initiative known for blending Western beats with traditional Asian instruments.

The project’s founder and Executive Producer, Will Robinson, first gained recognition more than a decade ago for fusing modern electronic rhythms with the distinctive sounds of Thailand’s Isan region. After recording two albums in Bangkok, including the popular track “Thailand Amazing Thailand,” Robinson was invited to Mongolia by sponsor Jack Lui.

During his visit, Robinson travelled from Ulaanbaatar to the Ara Folk Festival in Arkhangai Province, a nine-hour journey through Mongolia’s vast landscapes. The festival, surrounded by mountains and open countryside, brought together traditional musicians and cultural performers celebrating Mongolian heritage.

The experience proved deeply inspiring. Following the festival and meetings in Ulaanbaatar with several leading figures in Mongolia’s cultural and business community, Robinson quickly wrote the lyrics for a new song titled ‘Magical Mongolia’. He then shared the idea with his long-time collaborator and co-writer, Daniel Ryan.

The project soon evolved into an international production involving musicians from several countries. Legendary Mongolian performers The Baatar, Badma Badamkhand and Batzorig Vaanchig recorded their parts in Ulaanbaatar at New Nomad Records with Mongolian co-producer Demi Batmunkh Suren. Additional contributions came from drummer Erik Hargrove in Singapore, guitarist Livingstone Brown, and vocalist Sonia Rele in London. The soundtrack was ultimately mastered at the renowned Abbey Road Studios in London by Christian Wright.

Over the past decade, The Isan Project has also supported tourism promotion through music and video releases, previously encouraged by Thailand’s former Minister of Tourism and Sports, Weerasak Kowsurat. The team continues to explore new collaborations, including regional projects celebrating culture and travel across Asia.

‘Magical Mongolia’ is now available on digital music platforms. Video: https://youtu.be/a7TZaq7eatA

MH extends suspension of Doha flights

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 March 2026: Malaysia Airlines has extended the temporary suspension of its Doha (DOH) services until 20 March 2026, following an escalation in military strikes in the Persian Gulf.

The Doha service was initially suspended from 28 February 2026 due to airspace closures affecting the region. The airline said in a statement that it continues to closely monitor the situation through ongoing risk assessments and relevant Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) before resuming operations.

The airline is also increasing widebody capacity between Asia and Europe to support onward journeys and reunite families, with direct flights operating on alternative routes that avoid affected regions.

All other services, including Jeddah (JED) and Madinah (MED) in Saudi Arabia, London (LHR) and Paris (CDG), continue to operate as scheduled.

In travel advisories, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) recommends citizens defer non-essential travel to several Middle Eastern countries, including Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and the UAE.

IATA releases 2025 Safety Report

SINGAPORE, 17 March 2026: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its 2025 Annual Safety Report, demonstrating a solid year of safety performance.

Photo credit: IATA — Executive Summary 2025 Safety Report.

Safety highlights

  • The all-accident rate of 1.32 per million flights (one accident per 759,646 flights) was better than the 1.42 recorded in 2024 but slightly above the 2021-2025 five-year average of 1.27.
  • There were 51 accidents in 2025 among 38.7 million flights. That is fewer than the 54 accidents among 37.9 million flights in 2024, but above the 2021-2025 five-year average of 44 accidents.
  • There were eight fatal accidents in 2025. That is more than the seven fatal accidents recorded in 2024 and the five-year average of six fatal accidents.
  • There were 394 onboard fatalities in 2025, more than the 244 fatalities reported in 2024 and the five-year average of 198.

“Flying is the safest form of long-distance travel. Accidents are extremely rare, and each one reminds us to be even more focused on continuous improvement through global standards and collaboration guided by safety data,” said IATA’s Director General Willie Walsh.

“The result of that effort is clear in how the five-year rolling average rate for fatal accidents has improved. A decade ago, the rate was one fatal accident per 3.5 million flights (2012-2016). Today, there is one fatal accident for every 5.6 million flights (2021-2025).

“Flying is so safe that even one accident among the nearly 40 million flights operated annually moves the global data. Every accident is, of course, one too many. The goal for aviation remains zero accidents and zero fatalities.”

Key insights

  • The most common accidents in 2025 were tail strikes, landing gear events, runway excursions, and ground damage. This underscores the importance of safety measures for take-off, landing, and ground handling. Notably, there were no loss-of-control in-flight (LOC-I) accidents in 2025. It is the second time this has been achieved (previously in 2020) and is significant as LOC-I is a leading cause of fatalities.
  • Airport facilities contributed to 16% of accidents in 2025. This reinforces the need to fully respect global standards for runway safety areas, frangible installations within safety zones, and the effective mitigation of hazards such as runway surface contaminants, inadequate markings or lighting, and obstacles within protected areas or near runways.

“Airport infrastructure and runway environments play a critical role in accident outcomes. In several events, rigid obstacles near runways increased accident severity, likely turning otherwise survivable occurrences into fatal ones. All airports and regulators should continuously review runway safety areas and the structures near runways for compliance with global safety standards,” said Walsh.

  • IOSA airlines: Airlines on the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) registry had an all-accident rate of 0.98, significantly lower than the 2.55 recorded by non-IOSA carriers. The all-accident rate of IATA member airlines was 0.72 per million flights, significantly lower than the 3.09 for non-IATA members. All IATA member airlines capable of being audited under IOSA are on the IOSA registry.
  • Fatality risk, which measures the potential for loss of life, increased to 0.17 per million flights, higher than 2024 (0.06) and the five-year average (0.12). A small number of fatal accidents drove the increase in fatality risk. For example, Air India 171 (with 241 fatalities) and PSA Airlines flight 5342 (with 64 fatalities) accounted for over 77% of all loss of life on board aircraft in 2025.
