Norwegian Jewel’s extensive six-month Asia season will offer 16 immersive, port-rich itineraries visiting 11 countries and sailing from nine different departure ports, including Tokyo and Yokohama in Japan; Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan; Bangkok (Laem Chabang), Thailand; Bali (Benoa), Indonesia and Kuala Lumpur (Port Klang), Malaysia. With cruises ranging in length from 10-14 days, the season features several brand firsts: NCL’s first departures from Manila, Philippines and Seoul (Incheon), South Korea, as well as six new ports of call:

Manila, Boracay, Palawan and Salomague, Philippines

Bintan Island, Indonesia

Hualien, Taiwan

A focus on destination immersion means guests will enjoy country-intensive cruises that uncover the wonders of trending destinations like Korea, Indonesia and Japan; open-jaw itineraries that allow cruisers to book-end their trip with land tours; together with fewer sea days, longer stays in port and more overnights. Boasting an average of less than two sea days per sailing, up to 13.5 hours in destinations like Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, as well as extended overnight stays in places that come alive at night, such as Phuket, Osaka and Bali (Benoa) – Norwegian Jewel provides the ultimate way to explore diverse cultures closer to home.

SINGAPORE, 27 April 2023: Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NYSE: NCLH), a leading global cruise company which operates Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, recently launched its revamped climate action strategy along with short- and near-term greenhouse gas (“GHG”) targets to support the company’s ambitious pursuit of net zero by 2050.

These actions underscore the company’s robust commitment to decarbonisation as part of its global sustainability programme, Sail & Sustain.

Key components of the company’s new interim GHG reduction targets include:

Reduce GHG intensity by 10% by 2026 and 25% by 2030, compared to a 2019 baseline with intensity measured on a per capacity day basis.

The targets cover the company’s emissions from its ships, islands and facilities (Scopes 1 & 2) and upstream fuel- and energy-related activities, including well-to-tank emissions (a portion of Scope 3). The targets will capture the full well-to-wake emissions impact of the company’s fuel consumption.

Interim targets provide a roadmap to support the company’s existing net zero by 2050 ambition. The scope of this commitment expands to the company’s entire greenhouse gas footprint, including its vast network of suppliers and partners across its value chain.

“We are proud to further refine and strengthen our climate action strategy and commitments including by setting milestone GHG intensity reduction targets which will guide us on our ambitious pursuit of net zero by 2050,” said Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd president and chief executive officer-elect Harry Sommer.

“Every aspect of our business, from shoreside to shipboard, is responsible for doing their part to design, deliver and demonstrate results for decarbonisation. Our board of directors has reinforced this expectation by establishing shared accountability and tying incentives for our entire management team to this critical effort. We also recently took an important step forward on our pursuit of net zero by announcing the modification of two of our future Prima Class newbuilds to accommodate the use of green methanol in the future.”

Sommer continued: “We are also activating and mobilising our full network of team members, ports and destinations, suppliers and partners, and guests to act now and join us on this transformative journey, further amplifying the efforts we could achieve on our own.”

The company’s revamped climate action strategy is centred around three pillars – efficiency, innovation and collaboration.

Efficiency

The focus is on optimising efficiency for its existing fleet, which can immediately impact onboard power consumption and GHG emissions and generate fuel savings. This includes ongoing investments in systems and technologies, such as HVAC system upgrades and waste heat recovery systems, as well as operational enhancements, such as smart itinerary and voyage planning and optimisation of hotel operations. Operational changes require data, education and accountability.

Innovation

Innovating for long-term solutions and technologies, including those that support the ability to operate on green fuels. Since 2022 is the priority. The company has completed tests of biofuel blends on multiple ships, in which a blend of approximately 30% biofuel and 70% marine gas oil has been used. The company believes biodiesel is a viable transition fuel supporting decarbonisation as long-term solutions are tested and scaled.

Longer-term, the company views green methanol as a promising solution and recently announced the modification of Norwegian Cruise Line’s final two Prima Class ships, expected to be delivered in 2027 and 2028, to accommodate the use of green methanol as an alternative fuel source in the future. While additional modifications will be needed to fully enable the use of methanol in addition to traditional marine fuel on these ships, this reinforces the company’s commitment to decarbonisation. The use of green methanol would result in a drastic reduction in emissions, including an up to 95% reduction in CO2, and its properties enable the continued use of conventional fuel storage and bunkering with fewer modifications compared to other emerging fuels in the market at this time. However, the production of green methanol is still in the early stages and will require continued investments to scale for distribution and consumption globally sufficiently.

Collaboration

The pathway to net zero will be complex. It will require significant collaboration across the company’s network of stakeholders, including suppliers, communities, governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), to collectively partner and find solutions to combat climate change.

The company is continuously exploring partnerships to champion efforts surrounding the development of green fuels along with the global infrastructure to produce, store and distribute these fuels. The company also views cross-sector collaboration as a catalyst for effective and accelerated change. It is active in industry associations, such as the Methanol Institute, and regional forums. For example, the company is a first-mover partner of the Pacific Northwest to Alaska Green Corridor, a collaborative effort between ports, governments and cruise operators in the region to explore a maritime green corridor aimed at accelerating the deployment of zero GHG emission ships and operations between Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington.

In addition, the company continues to actively partner with key ports to accelerate the use of shore power technology which allows cruise ships to connect to onshore electrical power grids to supply much of the power needed while docked. While the land-based infrastructure expansion is underway, the company is also equipping its ships with the technology needed to plug in, targeting to have approximately 70% of its fleet equipped by 2025.

“We are encouraged to see the significant progress and momentum across sectors to decarbonise, but fundamental challenges continue to exist for the cruise industry to fully decarbonise by 2050,” said Jessica John, vice president of ESG, Investor Relations and Corporate Communications of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. “Rather than waiting for these challenges to dissolve, our strategy is about acting now to implement efficient solutions today, innovate for future solutions and collaborate with our stakeholders along the way. Underpinning this strategy is good governance and effective risk management as we work to advance our climate action efforts and build our company’s resilience.”

SINGAPORE, 12 April 2023: Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCL), a leading global cruise company which operates the Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises brands, has announced plans to improve connectivity at sea by offering SpaceX’s Starlink high-speed internet on its ships.

Using advanced low earth orbit satellites, Starlink delivers industry-leading broadband internet connectivity, which will improve the capacity, speed and reliability of the internet on board. The company is currently testing Starlink, beginning with Norwegian Breakaway, intending to roll out this game-changing technology across its entire world-class fleet in a phased manner.

“We are thrilled to offer Starlink on board our ships to improve internet connectivity at sea. This initiative is a testament to our continuous quest to find new and innovative ways to enhance the experience for guests and crew while sailing on our award-winning brands,” said Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings president and CEO-elect Harry Sommer.

“Ensuring that this technology meets our high standards of excellence for our guests is incredibly important to us, which is why we are introducing this cutting-edge technology across our fleet in a phased manner. Once deployed, guests and crew will have a faster and more reliable method to stay connected with friends and family by sharing the incredible memories they create at sea in real-time.”

If trials are successful, the company will equip seven additional vessels with Starlink by year-end, including all three of the company’s new additions this year, Oceania Cruises’ Vista, Norwegian Viva and Regent’s Seven Seas Grandeur.

A comprehensive rollout plan is under development, and details regarding the timeline and availability of specific ships will be communicated once finalised. In addition to enhancing the guest and crew experience, the extra bandwidth will allow for more flexibility for onboard services and improve the ship-to-shore connection for operational needs.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s incoming president David J Herrera said: “NCL has a history of pioneering the cruise experience and delivering the high-calibre entertainment programming our guests expect. We are dedicated to pushing the envelope, delivering on those expectations, and putting our guests first as we elevate our onboard offerings for the ultimate vacation at sea. This summer, I cannot wait to bring the fun and nostalgia of ‘Beetlejuice’ to our all-new Norwegian Viva.”

NCL’s senior vice president of entertainment and cruise programming, Richard Ambrose, added: “We pride ourselves on not only delivering amazing performances for theatre fans but introducing guests to Broadway and West End-calibre shows, which are made even more special by the incredible setting of the Viva Theatre & Club that seamlessly transforms from a best-in-class theatre experience to an expansive nightclub.”

The elaborate “Beetlejuice” production will charm and captivate guests as performers dance and sing along to show tune classics, including “Day-O” and “Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora),” while also revelling in the nostalgia from the pop culture classic film. Michelle D’Amico, a cast member of the Broadway production of “Beetlejuice” will join Norwegian Viva playing the role of “Lydia” for the first-at-sea rendition.

This announcement also comes on the heels of the wildly popular debut of “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” aboard Norwegian Prima, which featured a show-stopping performance from “American Idol” season two finalist Kimberley Locke during its 2022 inaugural season.

After the successful debut of one of the world’s most iconic game shows, “The Price is Right LIVE,” aboard Norwegian Prima last year, Norwegian Viva will also offer a live game show experience with the cruise industry’s first “Press Your Luck LIVE” at-sea. The immersive experience invites the audience to be part of the classic show and win incredible grand prizes.

The palatial Viva Theatre & Club features sophisticated special effects, a multi-story video wall, a show-stopping chandelier and VIP lounge seating, making it the ideal venue for Vegas-style night club events, such as “Ocean Music Fest,” the ultimate jam session where multiple musicians merge their talents on one stage for a world-class immersive concert.

Herrera, who currently serves as NCL’s chief consumer sales and marketing officer, has been with the company since 2015, after first joining as a senior advisor to the chief executive officer and chairman of Prestige Holdings in 2012.

Throughout his tenure, Herrera has successfully held various senior leadership roles within the organisation, including SVP brand finance, strategy and consumer research; SVP corporate development for NCLH; and president of NCLH China. As part of the company’s senior leadership, he has played an integral role in positioning NCL as one of the world’s leading cruise lines.

“David and I have worked closely together for almost a decade expanding NCL’s global presence and shaping its future,” said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer elect of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

“With over 25 years of robust business experience and strong financial, sales, marketing and business development background, David is a key contributor to NCL’s success. He will continue to guide the NCL brand on an accelerated path forward.”

In this new role, Herrera will be responsible for the overall strategic vision and business plan execution for NCL, as well as expand his reporting line to now include revenue management, guest services, brand finance, international sales, and the recently formed Experiences at Sea division which provides one of a kind, immersive events at sea for a range of passionate affinity communities.

“I am honoured and humbled to be given the opportunity to lead the passionate and incredible team at NCL, as well as to continue to work alongside Harry and our stellar leadership team to build on our strong momentum,” said David Herrera, the next President of Norwegian Cruise Line. “It will be another milestone year for us as we continue the Prima Class rollout, and I look forward to leading our team and guests along this exciting journey.”

Herrera has led the sales and marketing teams to record results in his current role. In November 2022, NCL succeeded in having its best-booked month ever and ended 2022 at record booking levels for 2023, starting this year in a better-booked position than ever before.

With Herrera’s appointment as NCL President, Adam Malone, who currently oversees consumer and integrated marketing, will assume the role of chief marketing officer, and 15-year NCL veteran Michael Tomoleoni, who currently manages the consumer sales division, will now serve as the chief consumer sales officer. Jason Krimmel will assume the newly created role of chief international sales and marketing officer, working closely with Herrera to further expand the Brand’s international footprint.
