BANGKOK, 13 October 2026: Travel advisories caution travellers to reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia or transit through the country’s Riyadh King Khalid International Airport because recent security incidents have disrupted airport operations.
Since 13 July, the Houthis (a military group in Yemen) have carried out military strikes across Saudi Arabia, including multiple attacks on Riyadh International Airport since 10 September.
Australia’s travel advisory system, Smartraveller, advises subscribers not to travel to Riyadh.
“If you choose to travel, do not depart for King Khalid International Airport until you have reconfirmed your flight with your airline or travel provider. Minimise your time at the airport.”
The advisory warns that “military conflict in the region, including in Saudi Arabia, may result in widespread movement restrictions, airspace closures, flight cancellations and other travel disruptions. Check information about airport and airline operations before you travel. Before travelling by air, land or sea, check the status of border crossings and transport routes, as they can change or close without warning.”
The advisory also includes travel to the Asir, Jazan, and Najran provinces in southern Saudi Arabia because of the deteriorating security situation and the risk of military strikes.
“We continue to advise not to travel to areas within 30km of the border with Yemen due to ongoing conflict in Yemen.”
The Houthis have renewed attacks against Saudi Arabia and have launched air strikes against Riyadh and regional airports. Attacks have also targeted energy and civilian infrastructure in Saudi Arabia’s southern provinces, Jeddah and along the Red Sea coast.
Filming and photographing critical infrastructure, military operations, drone launches and missile launches is strictly prohibited and can result in criminal prosecution. Don’t take or share any recordings or videos.
