SINGAPORE, 23 July 2024: The 45th Scientific Assembly of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR 2024) was held at Busan’s BEXCO from 13 to 21 July, showcasing the city’s world-class meeting facilities and destination attractions.

The Committee on Space Research is the largest consortium on space science in the world, and COSPAR 2024 rallied 2,700 space scientists from approximately 60 countries for discussions around future directions and international cooperation in space development. With the successful conclusion of COSPAR 2024 in Busan, the maritime MICE city is rising as a new centre of the aerospace industry. The following is a recommended itinerary, where you can visit some of the unique places in Busan to enjoy a hands-on space science experience.

BUSAN, 21 August 2013: A “Unique Venue” by definition is special and distinctive. It is more than just a meeting venue a convention center, hotel, or other conventional MICE venue because it offers exclusive features and represents the city or country in which it is located.

Event planners typically choose a venue based on the theme or purpose of the event, and many planners prefer Unique Venues over hotels and convention centers because they offer a special atmosphere and come with their own special stories.

In Korea, there are many Unique Venues that perfectly convey the charms of Korea. The Korean government recognizes the value of Unique Venues in sharing Korea’s traditions, culture, art, sports, pastimes, pop culture, nature, and other assets with the rest of the world and is always on the lookout for new Unique Venues. Currently, there are 52 venues that have been officially recognized as the Unique Venues of Korea.

Busan Adds to List of Korea Unique Venues in 2023

This year, Busan’s Busan X the Sky and P.ark were selected as Korea Unique Venues, which are recognized as the best MICE venues in Korea. In addition to being named a 2023 Korea Unique Venue, Busan X the Sky, an observatory that overlooks downtown Busan and Haeundae Beach, was also named one of the 100 Must-Visit Tourist Spots of Korea for 2023. P.ark, a cultural complex that is ideal for exhibitions and other cultural events, was rated as the top spot among all of this year’s new Korea Unique Venues. Both Unique Venues get their main identity from the ocean and have been officially recognized by the Korean government for their infinite potential as MICE venues.

SINGAPORE, 24 July 19 2023: Korean Air is resuming multiple routes to China and Japan, including Changsha, Wuhan, Weihai, Fukuoka and Nagoya, after a hiatus of three years and six months.

On the Seoul Incheon-Changsha route, the airline resumed operations with flights five times a week starting 19 July. Flights on the Seoul Incheon-Wuhan and Seoul Incheon-Weihai routes will resume on 24 September and 27 September.

Supporting the World Expo 2030 Busan bid

Starting on 27 September, the airline will resume its Busan-Fukuoka and Busan-Nagoya routes. Flights will operate twice daily to Fukuoka and daily to Nagoya from Busan. These routes will be served by a Boeing 737-900ER, with a 173-passenger capacity. With the resumption of these routes departing from Busan, Korean Air supports Korea’s bid to host the World Expo 2030 in Busan.

Passenger capacity 82% of pre-pandemic levels

Korean Air is also expanding its international flight operations to meet international travel demand through increased flight frequency. The airline is expanding frequencies in July and has reinstated flights resulting in the available seat km (ASK) capacity reaching approximately 82% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Korean Air implemented frequency increases on several routes worldwide. In the North American region, the airline has expanded flights on the Seoul Incheon-Chicago route from five to daily, on the Seoul Incheon-Dallas route, from four to five times per week, and on the Seoul Incheon-San Francisco route from seven to nine weekly. In Europe, the airline has increased flight frequencies on the Incheon-Frankfurt route from five weekly to daily and on the Incheon-Milan route from three to four weekly.

The airline is also increasing weekly flights to Ulaanbaatar, Sapporo and Bali. The Seoul Incheon-Ulaanbaatar route has increased from daily flights to eight weekly and will expand to 10 weekly in August. The airline has also increased frequencies from daily to 11 weekly between Seoul Incheon and Sapporo. It will increase flights from nine to 11 weekly between Seoul Incheon and Bali by the end of August, adding additional flights on Friday and Saturday.

BUSAN, 22 August 2022: Korea has recently successfully propelled the satellite launch rocket Nuri and the lunar probe Danuri in succession. Based on these achievements, the country is securing a stronger global standing academically and technologically in terms of space science.

Korea is also being recognised for its ability to attract relevant MICE events. In particular, Busan was the venue for not only the 2022 International Astronomical Union (IAU) General Assembly but was also selected as the host city for the 2024 Committee on Space Research (COSPAR). With the world’s largest space science academic events taking place in Busan, it has become possible to not only revitalize its MICE and tourism-related industries but also showcase Busan’s potential as a science and technology hub and MICE city.

IAUGA 2022 Successfully Held in Busan

Source: Busan Tourism Organisation

In 2015, Korea won the honor of hosting the 31st International Astronomical Union (IAU) General Assembly over the candidates of South Africa, Chile, and Canada. After a series of unfortunate delays due to COVID-19, this major scientific event finally took place in Busan.

The theme of this year’s General Assembly, which took place for 10 days and opened on August 2 at BEXCO in Busan, was “Astronomy for All”. It was structured not just as an academic meeting of specialists, but also as a science culture event for the general public. On August 6 and 7, public lectures on “next-generation astronomy” were held at the Busan National Science Museum. On August 9, various experiential activities were held at the BEXCO outdoor plaza, such as the Star Party where participants observed the sun during the day and the stars at night.

By hosting the 31st IAU General Assembly, which become a valuable forum for mutual exchange in the field of astronomy, Busan has clearly engraved itself in the hearts of visitors as a seaside MICE city where bright city life and nature coexist.

Busan Secures Hosting of COSPAR 2024!

Source: Busan Tourism Organisation

Meanwhile, the 45th COSPAR Scientific Assembly, the world’s largest symposium on space science, is set to take place in Busan in 2024. This assembly will be held at BEXCO from July 13 to 21, 2024, under the theme of “Team Spirit in Space Research”. In addition to diverse invitational lectures and academic presentations, assorted public events such as the “Space Film Festival” and “Meetings with Space Scientists” are being planned as well. As a part of the preparations to hold this assembly successfully, a team from the Busan Tourism Organization attended the 44th Assembly held in Athens, Greece, last July and networked with key specialists and officials. Hosting COSPAR 2024 will be an excellent opportunity to showcase Busan as a city of science and technology to space researchers and officials around the world, including NASA.

By being selected to host such large-scale space science events, Busan is being acknowledged as a MICE city that possesses the infrastructure and resources to successfully conduct wide-ranging academic exchanges.

Operating airports in Gimpo, Gimhae, Jeju, Daegu, and Yangyang KAC said the air route between Seoul’s Gimpo and Tokyo’s Haneda airports will open on 8 June.

Korean Air Lines, Asiana Airlines, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways are committed to flying the route, according to the News18 report. The Gimpo-Haneda route has been suspended since March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gimhae Airport in Busan is ready to resume 76 international flights on 13 routes from June 2022. Flights to Bangkok and Hanoi are a top priority to reconnect with Southeast Asian cities popular with leisure travellers from South Korea, followed by Fukuoka in Japan.

Meanwhile, KAC plans to host the Airport Council International (ACI)’s annual meeting in the southern port city of Busan in 2025. The ACI is an international organisation representing the collective interests of airports worldwide. It serves nearly 1,950 airports in 185 countries.
