VIENTIANE, 23 February 2026: Lao Airways confirms this week that it will resume flights linking the Lao capital, Vientiane, with Da Nang, a coastal city in central Vietnam.

Announcing the return to Da Nang on its Facebook page, the airline said it would relaunch the service on 29 March, offering round-trip flights every Thursday and Sunday, deploying a Comac 909 on the route with 90 seats in a single economy class configuration. Flight time: 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Flight schedule

Ticket sales are open at the airline’s ticketing offices in Laos, through accredited ticket agents, and on the airline’s website and app. On its website, the airline quotes a round-trip fare of USD290 for a booking in April 2026.

Return to Da Nang

Before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the airline flew the route using a 70-seat ATR-72, with a transit stop in Pakse, southern Laos. It briefly attempted to resume a direct service between Vientiane and Da Nang in 2023 using an Airbus A320, but suspended the service due to poor market response after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The timing is better this time round, as the airline has the right-sized aircraft for the route: The C909, with 90 seats, compared with the ATR72 (70 seats) and the A320 (148 seats) previously assigned to the route pre- and post-Covid-19 pandemic.

There has also been a surge in Da Nang’s popularity with international tourists, with the city projected to welcome 19 million visitors this year. Many travellers from South Korea and China now use Da Nang as a hub and look for “short hops” to places like Luang Prabang or Vientiane. Lao Airlines is banking on these international tourists, rather than just local traffic, to fill the seats on its C909.

LUANG PRABANG, Lao PDR, 10 June 2025: Lao PDR is set to welcome regional tourism leaders to the Mekong Tourism Forum (MTF) 2025 in the World Heritage town of Luang Prabang from 19 to 28 June.

In a special interview, HE Suanesavanh Vignaket, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism (MICT), shares Lao PDR’s priorities for sustainable tourism, community development, and regional cooperation. With Luang Prabang recently recognised among the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories and new infrastructure enhancing connectivity with neighbouring countries, the Minister invites the world to experience a more connected, sustainable, and inclusive future for Greater Mekong Subregion tourism.

Q: Lao PDR welcomed over 4 million visitors in 2024, surpassing expectations. What key strategies or developments do you believe contributed most to this success?

A: In 2024, we proudly welcomed over 4.12 million international visitors, generating more than USD1 billion in tourism revenue. This achievement was driven by several key factors. First, the Lao PDR-China Railway has made cross-border travel faster and more comfortable, especially for regional travellers. Second, the “Visit Laos Year 2024” campaign helped to spotlight our diverse tourism offerings — from natural wonders and heritage towns to adventure and wellness tourism. We also improved visa policies and border infrastructure, making entry smoother for tourists. Moreover, coordinated marketing and capacity-building efforts at the provincial level helped ensure high-quality experiences nationwide. Looking ahead, we are also starting to embrace digital technologies such as 5G networks and tourism mobile applications to improve visitor services further and support sustainable tourism development.

Q: How significant is this event for Lao PDR and Luang Prabang, and what can delegates look forward to?

A: We are deeply honoured that Luang Prabang has been selected to host the Mekong Tourism Forum 2025. This opportunity is a source of great pride not only for Luang Prabang province but for the entire nation. Luang Prabang was recently recognised as one of the Green Destination Top 100 Stories of 2025 and has been acknowledged for its strong commitment to sustainable tourism and community development. Additionally, Luang Prabang is currently implementing a Smart and Integrated Urban Development Strategy. This project enables us to enhance tourism management, protect heritage sites, and promote balanced urban development. These initiatives reflect our commitment to harmonize preservation with innovation as tourism in the region continues to grow.

MTF 2025 will offer delegates a chance to experience this firsthand. Besides the main program, we invite delegates to explore some hidden gems nearby such as Ban Chan pottery village, Phanom Handicraft Centre, Sangkhong and Sanghai Handicraft villages. These places reflect the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty that make Luang Prabang truly unique.

Q: What are the country’s priorities to ensure tourism growth remains sustainable and benefits local communities?

A: It is indeed true that Lao PDR remains something of a hidden gem for many international visitors, but we are gradually welcoming an increasing number of travellers to our country. As this growth continues, our foremost priority is to ensure that it is both sustainable and inclusive. The government is placing a strong emphasis on promoting sustainable tourism and cultural preservation as key pillars for long-term economic and social development. These include the development of cultural villages, the revitalisation of traditional customs, the enhancement of libraries, museums, and heritage sites, as well as the elimination of outdated practices. A core focus of our approach is community-based tourism, where local people provide services and benefit directly from tourism-related activities. In 2024, more than 60% of tourism businesses were located outside major cities, indicating that opportunities are being spread to rural areas. With the continued support from our development partners, we are working to strengthen local capacities and ensure that tourism contributes meaningfully to both cultural preservation and environmental sustainability.

Q: How do you see connectivity shaping the future of tourism in Lao PDR and the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS)?

A: Improved connectivity is fundamental to advancing tourism in the GMS. In this regard, the Lao PDR–China Railway has played a transformative role, having already served over 480,000 cross-border passengers. This vital link has significantly facilitated travel between Lao PDR and China. At the same time, the new road connecting Vientiane and Chiang Mai reduces travel time by approximately 3 hours and opens up exciting new tourism routes. We have also launched a new cross-border bus service between Udon Thani (in Thailand) and Vang Vieng (in Lao PDR) that further enhances land travel options for visitors. In addition to land and rail, we are working to enhance air connectivity. Lao Airlines and other regional carriers are expanding flight routes linking Lao PDR with ASEAN’s key cities, such as Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Kunming, and Chiang Mai. Strengthening air services is essential for promoting seamless multi-destination travel across the region.

These developments allow tourists to explore multiple destinations within a single trip. We are working closely with our GMS partners to develop multi-country tourism products and promote regional circuits. This not only enhances the appeal of the region as a whole but also ensures that the benefits of tourism are shared among all GMS countries.

Q: How important is provincial and community-based tourism development to Lao PDR’s national tourism strategy?

A: Provincial and community-based tourism development is a key pillar of Lao PDR’s national tourism strategy. Each of our provinces offers distinct and authentic experiences, and we strive to ensure that the benefits of tourism reach local communities nationwide. For example, Khammouane Province is developing eco-adventure tourism activities, such as zip-lining and kayaking. Meanwhile, Vientiane Capital has launched the “Vientiane’s Sustainable Tourism” initiative, which integrates new technologies, infrastructure upgrades, and environmentally-friendly transportation options to enhance the visitor experience while promoting sustainability.

To support these efforts, we have established the Destination Management Network (DMN). This platform brings together stakeholders from both public and private sectors at the national and provincial levels. Through the DMN and strategic public-private partnerships, we are promoting sustainable tourism models that not only support local livelihoods but also contribute to inclusive economic growth.

Q: Can you tell us more about the ASEAN Ecotourism Standard and Lao PDR’s role in developing regional initiatives like the ASEAN Ecotourism Corridor?

A: Yes, ecotourism is one of our key national priorities. Lao PDR has taken on an active role in fostering ecotourism under the ASEAN tourism cooperation framework. We were honoured to serve as the lead country coordinator in the development of the ASEAN Ecotourism Standard, which provides an essential set of guidelines designed to enhance the quality, sustainability, and consistency of ecotourism experiences across the region. In addition, we also actively supported the establishment of the ASEAN Ecotourism Corridor, which aims to encourage travellers to explore natural and rural areas responsibly across multiple ASEAN countries.

In Lao PDR, we are proud to offer a wide range of nature-based tourism experiences, including visits to national parks, protected areas, and ethnic minority communities. For example, Nam Et–Phou Louey National Park offers unique wildlife tracking experiences, while the Bolaven Plateau provides opportunities for scenic trekking. We believe that promoting ecotourism contributes not only to environmental conservation and cultural preservation but also directly supports the livelihoods of local communities across our region.

Q: How do you envision Lao PDR working with neighbouring countries to promote multi-country travel and sustainable tourism?

A: The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) holds great potential for cross-border tourism, driven by our shared cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and improving connectivity. Lao PDR is working in close partnership with our GMS neighbours through regional frameworks such as the GMS Economic Cooperation Program and ASEAN tourism cooperation to promote multi-country travel and sustainable tourism. We are engaged in collaborative efforts with GMS member countries to enhance infrastructure connectivity, develop joint travel products, and promote thematic tourism circuits that link our cultural, natural, and heritage sites across the region. In addition, Lao PDR participates in initiatives that support sustainable tourism standards, capacity building, and knowledge sharing among GMS countries. Through these collective efforts, we aim to foster a more inclusive, resilient and interconnected landscape in the GMS.

Q: How do you see the role of women in shaping the future of tourism in Lao PDR?

A: Women play an essential role at all levels of Lao PDR’s tourism sector. At the national level, the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism is proud to have many women in leadership positions, including the Vice Minister and several Director Generals. At the community level, women are at the forefront, running guesthouses, leading handicraft cooperatives, guiding visitors, and managing eco-tourism sites. Moreover, we are also encouraged by the efforts of organizations, such as the Women with Disabilities Association which are helping to bring Lao handicrafts to the global market. This reflects that tourism in Lao PDR is becoming more inclusive, supporting women, minorities and people with disabilities.

In 2024, women represented over 55% of the tourism workforce in Lao PDR. As we continue to grow our tourism sector, we remain committed to ensuring that tourism development leaves no one behind. We aim to empower women, ethnic minorities, and vulnerable groups to fully participate and benefit from the opportunities that tourism provides.

Q: Looking ahead beyond 2025, what is your vision for Lao PDR tourism development, and how can international partners and travellers support this journey toward a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable tourism future?

A: Our vision is to build a tourism sector that is inclusive, resilient, and deeply rooted in sustainability. We are deeply committed to preserving Lao PDR’s rich cultural identity, supporting local communities, and safeguarding our natural heritage. Our goal is to continue offering authentic experiences that reflect the heart of who we are, ensuring that tourism brings benefits to all while honouring our environment and cultural values.

We welcome international partnerships to support areas like training and capacity building, sustainable destination management, digital transformation, and climate resilience. At the same time, we encourage travellers to visit Lao PDR with open hearts by choosing eco-friendly options, supporting local businesses, and respecting our cultural values.
BANGKOK, 1 April 2025: Luang Prabang in northern Laos will host the annual Mekong Tourism Forum from 23 to 27 June 2025 side-by-side with the 55th Meeting of the GMS Tourism Working Group attended by government representatives from the six Mekong Region countries.

Lijiang City in Yunang Province, China, hosted the 2024 Mekong Tourism Forum last April when an announcement confirmed that Laos would host the Mekong Tourism Forum 2025 in Luang Prabang.

Dee Suvimol Thanasarakij

When asked for more information, Mekong Tourism Coordination Office executive director Dee Suvimol Thanasarakij said details would be posted on the MTCO website next week when “we will start promoting the event.”

The office has around 12 weeks to plot the profile and muster a more substantial turnout of travel executives from the six member countries than was evident in Lijiang in China. First established in the late 1990s, the event’s popularity peaked at around 300 delegates. Due to Southeast Asia’s crowded travel show calendar, attendance has dropped dramatically in recent years.

However, Suvimol noted that MTF 2025 would be the platform to launch the “new GMS Tourism Strategy, which serves as a roadmap for GMS tourism until 2030… MTCO’s work priorities follow the recommendations outlined in the strategy.”

In the meantime, MTCO is preparing capacity-building programmes to foster inclusive tourism with some development partners.

Details will be confirmed during the second half of the year.

Since the last MTF in Lijiang, the MTCO has led capacity-building programmes(training for trainers) to improve digital skills for women in tourism communities in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, working with the ASEAN Japan Centre (AJC), the Ministry of Tourism Laos and the Asian Development Bank. The participants have recently run their own training in their communities to use digital skills to promote their tourism products online. AJC provided financial support, while MTCO initiated and acted as the coordinating agency.

The Mekong Region comprises Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. The six countries fund the MTCO with equal contributions.

If the MTCO is quiet regarding its plans for the next annual Mekong Tourism Forum, Destination Mekong, the high-flying agency responsible for marketing the Mekong Region through partnerships with the private sector, is even quieter. The most recent mention of activity was recorded on its website in May 2024, when it announced a collaboration with Netblitz. Since then, a digital slowdown of communications has been apparent after it recorded details of its Annual General Meeting on 4 July 2023. The Cambodian-based marketing organisation (registered in Singapore) heads towards its next AGM scheduled for July 2025, when it is due to appoint members to its board. Destination Mekong is led by its CEO, Catherine Germier-Hamel, and its Chief Marketing Officer, Gerrit Kruger. TTRW messaged questions to both executives and awaits a response. Destination Mekong’s CEO did respond. She confirmed: “My three-year contract with DM ended on 31 October 2024. Your valid questions should be asked to Dr Jens Thraenhart and Gerrit Kruger.”

LUANG PRABANG Laos, 6 February 2025: Khiri Travel (Laos) and Camino Women Australia are establishing a new community-based hill trekking route in remote northern Laos targeting female hikers.

The inaugural four-day trek will commence on 16 February, with six women from Australia joining the trip. Organised by Camino Women (Australia) and Khiri Travel (Laos), the mountain hike is part of a 12-day northern Laos journey that includes a slow boat trip on the Mekong River, a train ride, visits to Buddhist caves and an elephant park, walks in paddy fields, meetings with various ethnic group villagers, and experiencing the UNESCO world heritage township of Luang Prabang.

However, the trip organisers believe the inclusion, support and training for villagers in three remote mountain hamlets on the new Soum-son (community) Trail are a positive example of responsible travel.

Preparing to receive the women hikers in mid-February, 26 women and men from the three remote villages embarked on three days of training in Luang Prabang in Laos last December. The villagers learned about community-based tourism, safety standards, housekeeping service, waste management, food preparation, and customer service. There were hands-on practical sessions. Four community tourism experts from the Lao government carried out the training.

Two-way learning process

“Our approach is to treat tourism as a supplementary source of income for the villagers who are rice farmers,” said Khiri Travel Laos country manager Julie Beaufrère. “We don’t want over-dependency on tourism. And the cultural learning process is also very much between villagers and the women hikers.”

After the inaugural trip in February, Camino Women and Khiri Travel aim to bring five hiking groups to the Soum-son Trail in 2025, followed by two per month in the next high season, November 2025 to February 2026.

Each trip will have the same local guide from the villages and Khiri Travel’s highly experienced Laotian community guide.

Camino Women and Khiri Travel’s charitable arm, Khiri Reach, paid for the training in December. After consulting with the villagers about what else they may need, Khiri Reach and Camino donated two laptop computers, school books and preserved food to the villages on the remote hiking trail.

Camino Women’s lead trip designer, Lisa O’Donnell, surveyed the trail with Beaufrère last year and is glad to see the preparation, training, and hard work paying off.

“We’re very positive about our partnership with the wonderful villagers and the proactive support from the Lao authorities and Khiri Travel. I believe our Camino women hikers will enjoy their immersion in Laotian village life for four days.”

Australian tour operator Leatherback Travel operates specialist travel units such as Camino Women, Patch Adventures, Magnificent Rail and Fencox Travel. Khiri Travel has handled various tours for these brands in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia since 2023.

“The Soum-son Trail and the full 10-day greater Laos experience is a terrific example of close cooperation between Leatherback Travel and Khiri,” said Khiri Travel founder Willem Niemeijer. “We aim to develop more responsible and regenerative travel experiences with Leatherback Travel across Southeast Asia in the months ahead.”

The face-to-face workshop addressed key issues such as digital marketing analysis and planning, promoting community-based tourism enterprises online, and developing digital skills training for community-based micro and small tourism businesses such as homestays, guest houses, restaurants, handicraft outlets, and local tour services.

Participants also visited community-based tourism enterprises, assessing their digital needs as real-life case studies.

The ‘training the trainers’ workshop also included sessions on effective resource utilisation, planning, budgeting, and setting goals for digital marketing.

ASEAN-Japan Centre Assistant Director Naoko Fujikawamsaid said digital skills are crucial for the worldwide marketing of tourism products. However, few women in the tourism sector had opportunities to develop their digital marketing skills.

“By empowering these women with the knowledge to connect their local tourism products to the global market, we are supporting their personal growth and nurturing the sustainable development of their communities”.

Lao PDR’s Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism Director General of Tourism Development Phonemaly Inthaphome aid: “Women have the potential to lead and innovate in tourism. By enhancing their digital skills, we are not just investing in individual capabilities but investing in their communities’ future.”

MTCO Executive Director Suvimol ‘Dee’ Thanasarakij noted that women comprised more than half of the tourism workforce in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. However, many were informal labourers with limited access to education and opportunities.

“Through this training, we aim to empower women in local tourism communities with the digital skills needed to strengthen their businesses and gain greater exposure to the global market,” she said.

Fujikawa added: “We believe these participants will become catalysts for change, passing on their knowledge and driving innovation in tourism across their regions.”

After the event, Thanasarakij concluded: “We hope this training will create a ripple effect, with participants passing on their knowledge and skills to others, fostering resilience and growth across the region.”

About Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office
The governments of Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam established the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (MTCO) in 2006 as a tourism collaboration framework. The MTCO aims to develop and promote the Mekong Region as a single tourism destination.
