Visitors who choose to go ashore can spend their day in Langkawi according to their interests, as the island offers a range of experiences suited to families and travellers alike, from nature-based activities and family-friendly attractions to local crafts and cultural experiences. The island is also home to Southeast Asia’s first UNESCO Global Geopark, offering visitors an opportunity to encounter the geological and natural heritage that distinguishes the Langkawi archipelago.

All Disney Adventure sailings will continue to begin and end in Singapore. On itineraries that include Langkawi, guests may go ashore during the port visit but will not be permitted to embark or disembark in Langkawi, and must return to the ship by the all-aboard time communicated onboard.

For Langkawi, the announcement marks the beginning of a new relationship with Disney Cruise Line and another opportunity to put the island on the itinerary of travellers discovering Southeast Asia.

Breakfast comes out of takeaway boxes. Surf apps are checked, the wind is watched, and eyes turn towards the horizon. Boards sit ready on the sand while the small group gathered on the beach waits to see what the sea has decided.

Some mornings bring waves. Some don’t. Nobody seems particularly bothered. For Langkawi’s growing surfing community, the waiting is part of it.

When the wind changes

Langkawi’s seasons shape life on the island, and surfing is no different. When the monsoon winds shift and conditions begin to change, surfboards come out, and messages start circulating about the latest swell.

Weather forecasts help to pin the season from April to November during the southwest monsoon, with the most promising wave conditions occurring from July through September.

Small groups make their way to the west coast, particularly around Pantai Tengah, hoping the forecasts are right. Visitors who have surfed here before return, while locals keep a close eye on the conditions. There are no guarantees. A promising forecast can produce nothing, while an ordinary morning can turn into a memorable session.

That unpredictability has helped shape the character of surfing here. The focus isn’t on chasing the biggest wave. It’s on being there when the conditions come together.

Learning to wait

Ask Jay what surfing has taught him and his answer comes quickly: patience. He first got into surfing in Bali before continuing in Cherating, on Malaysia’s east coast. What started as curiosity eventually became a different way of looking at the ocean.

You can’t control the wind or make the waves arrive. You can prepare, watch the conditions and wait.

Today, Jay passes that lesson on through his surf school. For beginners, the goal may be to stand on a board for the first time. But the experience is also about learning to move with the water rather than trying to fight it. The first successful ride is often the moment everything clicks.

The surf shop where everyone meets

For Han, the day moves between the water and his surf shop, where conversations about tides and forecasts easily turn into conversations about everything else.

His café has become a natural meeting point for the surfing community. Surfers stop by for coffee, travellers swap stories and beginners celebrate their first successful ride.

A Japanese photographer has also spent time with Han and his group, documenting the everyday side of the community — the sessions, the people and the moments between them.

The social side of surfing doesn’t stop when the boards are put away. In many ways, that is when the community comes together.

A community built one save at a time

Langkawi’s surf community has grown gradually, through people introducing friends to the water, visitors returning for another season and surfers sharing what they know.

A request for a lesson can lead to another. A first session can turn into a regular habit. Someone who arrived as a visitor might come back with a friend the following year.

Today, locals surf alongside visitors and experienced surfers encourage beginners as they learn. Children are starting their first lessons, while more seasoned riders still celebrate the small improvements that come with every session.

There is little interest in hierarchy. Whether you’ve been surfing for years or are still figuring out how to stand on the board, everyone starts in the same place: waiting for the next wave.

Let the island set the pace

Surfing requires you to pay attention to what is happening around you. In Langkawi, that means learning to read the wind, the rain, the tide and the changing conditions.

Experience helps, but nature still has the final say. Sometimes the forecast promises perfect conditions and delivers nothing. Sometimes a regular morning produces a few rides worth remembering. Over time, surfers learn when to paddle out, when to wait and when to simply call it a day.

Pulau Tuba, a serene “hidden” island just a 15-minute boat ride from the main Langkawi resorts, is famous for being one of the few inhabited islands in the archipelago group that has resisted the heavy commercialisation. It’s Langkawi 30 years ago: Slow-paced, rustic, and full of traditional kampung (village) charm.

Bernama reported earlier this week on the progress of the ferry service that has served the Tuba and Straits Islands Community Cooperative since last October, with a 100-passenger capacity per trip.  

Introduced by the Community Cooperative of Tuba Islands and Selat Bhd (Bestuba), the Mini Ferry Service has strengthened Pulau Tuba’s tourism appeal, with passenger numbers reaching around 6,000 per month, especially during school holidays and long weekends, according to the Bernama report.

Pulau Tuba is famous for its traditional fishing-village atmosphere and natural beauty, with potential to be an added-value tourist attraction when combined with visits to Langkawi.

How to Get There

To reach Pulau Tuba, you must take a boat from the main island of Langkawi.

Departure Point: Boats typically depart from the Marble Jetty (near the Kuah Jetty) in Kuah.

Boat Ride: The journey takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Local boats often wait for enough passengers before departing, or you can charter a private boat.

What makes Pulau Tuba special?

The “Time Travel” Vibe: Unlike Pantai Cenang’s bustling bars, Pulau Tuba is a quiet fishing and farming community. You’ll see water buffaloes roaming paddy fields and traditional wooden houses.

Eco-Tourism: It is part of the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park. It features rare geological formations, limestone caves (such as Gua Kelawar, or Bat Cave), and dense mangroves.

The Bridge to Dayang Bunting: A colourful bridge connects Pulau Tuba to the neighbouring Pulau Dayang Bunting, allowing you to explore both islands by motorbike or bicycle easily.

Top things to do

Rent a bicycle: This is the best way to see the island. The roads are winding and quiet, perfect for a leisurely ride through the villages.

Try the “Mee Udang” (Prawn Noodles): The island is famous for this dish, featuring fresh, giant prawns caught by local fishermen.

Hiking: You can trek up to the Bukit Kecik viewpoint or explore the “Valley of the Bees” for incredible panoramic views.

Bird Watching: It’s a haven for hornbills and Brahminy kites (the reddish-brown eagles Langkawi is named after).

Organised by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), the launch reflects the island’s readiness to welcome a new chapter of travel growth.

The event was officiated by Datuk Seri Iskandar Bin Datuk Haji Mohd Kaus, Chief Executive Officer of LADA, and witnessed by invited dignitaries, including representatives from the federal and state levels, Members of Parliament, State Assemblymen, district administration, and local authorities.

The Langkawi Calendar of Events 2026 presents a year-long programme of 151 cultural, community, sporting and visitor-focused experiences curated to sustain momentum throughout the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign year. 

Designed with both travellers and the tourism industry in mind, the calendar supports consistent visitor flows, encourages longer stays, and creates opportunities for local operators to participate meaningfully in the island’s tourism ecosystem.

“The Calendar of Events 2026 reflects our focus on quality, continuity and readiness as we enter Visit Malaysia 2026. Langkawi is well-positioned to offer experiences that are welcoming, well-curated and grounded in the island’s character,” said Datuk Seri Iskandar Bin Datuk Haji Mohd Kaus.

Carrying the spirit of the celebrations into the first day of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign year, Langkawi extended a coordinated New Year Visitor Welcome across its primary entry points on 1 January 2026, from 1000to 2400.

This milestone route represents a vital step in strengthening tourism links between Central Asia and Malaysia, making Langkawi’s world-renowned beaches, rainforests, and island adventures more accessible than ever. 

The direct connection reduces total travel time to just six hours, offering travellers a smooth and convenient journey to one of Southeast Asia’s most breathtaking holiday destinations.

This new route is the result of a strategic collaboration between Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Tourism Malaysia (TM), and Batik Air, demonstrating a joint commitment to elevating Langkawi’s visibility in emerging global markets. 

To support and strengthen this new connectivity, LADA hosted a series of business-to-business engagements in Tashkent and Samarkand last month. The sales mission reached out to industry players from both countries, with 16 Langkawi-based tourism businesses participating. The mission drew strong attendance from Uzbekistan, with approximately 130 travel agents in Tashkent and 50 in Samarkand participating in sales and networking sessions. The engagements served as a platform to build partnerships, co-create travel packages, and accelerate interest in Langkawi among Central Asian travellers.
