{"id":227006,"date":"2023-10-04T05:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-03T22:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/?p=227006"},"modified":"2023-10-04T06:11:09","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T23:11:09","slug":"paradigm-shift-in-airport-traffic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/2023\/10\/paradigm-shift-in-airport-traffic\/","title":{"rendered":"Paradigm shift in airport traffic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>SINGAPORE, 4 October 2023: The top 50 ranking of the busiest airports by outbound international passenger traffic released by travel analytics firm ForwardKeys paints a dramatic picture compared to the pre-pandemic era.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What differs substantially from that of 2019 is the significant movement among European and MENA airports.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-227008 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 528px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 528\/754;width:528px;height:754px\" width=\"528\" height=\"754\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-2.jpg 527w, https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-2-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-2-420x600.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/2-2-294x420.jpg 294w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In Europe, substantial ranking gains for Istanbul&#8217;s Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) and Antalya (AYT) reflect continued demand for &#8220;sun and beach&#8221; destinations in Turkey as holidaymakers seek better value for money, as well as the rise of Istanbul&#8217;s Airport as a key global hub.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Berlin Brandenburg (BER) enters the top 50 airports by international departures for the first time, having replaced the city\u2019s Schonefeld and Tegel airports \u2013 which closed in 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paris Orly (ORY) climbed 13 places compared with 2019, partly due to additional capacity added by the inauguration of the new Terminal 3 in April 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaga-Costa del Sol (AGP) also enters the top 50, with international outbound seat capacity boosted by the opening of EasyJet\u2019s new seasonal base at the airport in 2021 and new connections to the USA and Middle East.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Cairo International (CAI) and Jeddah (JED) show significant ranking gains of 26 and 16 places, respectively, emphasising the growing importance of the region for business travel and long-haul transit, along with the continued promotion of tourism by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states looking to diversify their economies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThese figures only demonstrate that what we are seeing in some destinations is not travel recovery but a shift in how people travel, with plenty of emerging new business opportunities for retailers and brands to consider in Europe and the Middle East.
