Last month, United Nations member states agreed on the world\u2019s first High Seas Treaty, which will enforce the pledge to protect 30% of the oceans by 2030 made at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencefocus.com\/news\/cop15-30-by-30-biodiversity-target\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UN Biodiversity Conference<\/a> last December, a seismic shift towards safeguarding and regenerating our vital marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe treaty provides a legal framework to establish vast marine protected areas (MPAs) on the high seas \u2013 areas of the ocean that lie out of any single nation\u2019s jurisdiction representing around two-thirds of the oceans \u2013 and equitably and sustainably share its genetic resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnly 1.2% of these legally-defined \u2018international waters\u2019 are protected. That means that any marine life outside those areas is at risk from overfishing, shipping traffic, and exploration such as deep-sea mining, not to mention climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe importance of our oceans, which cover 70% of the Earth\u2019s surface, can\u2019t be underestimated: they produce half the oxygen we breathe, represent 95% of the Earth\u2019s biosphere and are our largest carbon sink. The stark truth, however, is that much has already been disastrously overexploited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile the High Seas Treaty is a huge step in the right direction, what happens next \u2013 ratification by all signatory countries, followed by the hard work of implementation \u2013 is what matters.
