Mask wearing on flights in Asia remains\ncompulsory and on public transport and indoor venues, including shopping malls.\nSingapore is easing the rule but not for public transport and airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/travel-airport-600x338.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-202236 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/338;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan on Wednesday said it was no longer necessary to wear\nmasks outdoors to protect against Covid-19 providing social distancing was\npractised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent report noted that 18 airlines in the US phased out\nmask-wearing on their domestic flights and international flights to\ndestinations where mask-wearing was deemed optional. However, here in Asia,\ninflight mask-wearing remains mandatory in most contexts and is likely to stay\nthat way until Covid-19 is declared an endemic across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Newest EU guideline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IATA said on Thursday it welcomed new guidance from the\nEuropean Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), removing its recommendation that masks\nshould be required in-flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EASA&#8217;s updated Aviation Health Safety Protocol, published on\n11 May, calls for the mandatory mask rule to be relaxed where restrictions have\nbeen eased for other transport modes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This important shift reflects the high levels of\nvaccination, natural immunity levels, and the removal of domestic restrictions\nin many European nations. The updated guidance also acknowledges the need to\nmove from an emergency to a more sustainable mode of managing Covid-19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe welcome EASA\u2019s recommendation to relax the mask mandate,\nwhich is another important step along the road back to normality for air\npassengers. Travellers can look forward to the freedom of choice on whether to\nwear a mask. And they can travel with confidence knowing that many features of\nthe aircraft cabin, such as high-frequency air exchange and high-efficiency\nfilters, make it one of the safest indoor environments,\u201d said IATA\u2019s\ndirector-general Willie Walsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, several jurisdictions still maintain mask\nrequirements. That is a challenge for airlines and passengers flying between\ndestinations with different requirements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe believe that mask requirements on board aircraft should\nend when masks are no longer mandated in other parts of daily life, for\nexample, theatres, offices or on public transport. Although the European\nprotocol comes into effect next week, there is no globally consistent approach\nto mask-wearing on board aircraft. Airlines must comply with the regulations\napplicable to the routes they are operating. The aircraft crew will know what\nrules apply and it is critical that passengers follow their instructions.
