{"id":204352,"date":"2022-05-03T02:15:52","date_gmt":"2022-05-02T19:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/?p=204352"},"modified":"2022-05-03T03:26:27","modified_gmt":"2022-05-02T20:26:27","slug":"trek-returns-to-honour-wwii-pows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/2022\/05\/trek-returns-to-honour-wwii-pows\/","title":{"rendered":"Trek returns to honour WWII POWs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>SANDAKAN, Malaysia, 3 May 2022: The Covid pandemic may not be over completely, but Sabah&#8217;s tourism industry is already showing the first signs of resurgence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the six trekkers who took part in the six-day\/five-night 77<sup>th<\/sup> Sandakan-Ranau Death March (SDRM) trekking tour from Sandakan to Ranau, recovery from the pandemic and the opening of the international borders have inspired a newfound love for historical tourism attractions that are available right in their own backyards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/The-SDRM-trekkers-and-support-team-600x450.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-204380 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/450;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sandakan Death Marches were a series of forced marches\nfrom Sandakan to Ranau in Borneo that resulted in the deaths of 2,434 Allied\nprisoners of war incarcerated by the Japanese at the Sandakan POW Camp in North\nBorneo during World War II. As with the previous years, this year\u2019s SDRM tour\nwas held as a commemorative pilgrimage to honour the fallen heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years prior, the Sandakan-Ranau Death Marches tour was\nonly participated by members of the armed forces or groups comprising the\ndescendants of the fallen Australian and British servicemen who wanted a deeper\ninsight into what ordeals the POWs endured during the forced 260 kilometre-long\nDeath March. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/The-six-SDRM-trekkers-600x400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-204381 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/400;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The invading Japanese army organised the marches between\nJanuary and August 1945, and they are regarded as the single worst atrocity perpetrated\nagainst Australian personnel during World War II. Only six Australians survived\nthe wartime incarceration in Sandakan and Ranau. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local trekking expert and veteran tour guide Tham Yau Kong\nof TYK Adventure Tours says that it&#8217;s important for Sabah&#8217;s residents to delve\ndeeper into their own history and honour the sacrifices made in the past.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is important to remember that there are other local\nheroes worth knowing beyond the ones mentioned in our history books,&#8221; says\nTham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the tour, the six trekkers have had the opportunity\nto get to know the locals and mingle with them. They have also had a chance to\nspeak with the sons of the late Gambut @ Ahmad Tajudin bin Abang, who played an\nimportant role in helping the Australian teams recover bodies along the Death\nMarch track after the war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trekkers also had a chance to meet with the grandnephew\nof the late OKK Domima Akoi, known as the \u2018Ring Lady\u2019 of the unsung heroes who\nhelped to support the Australian POWs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I have been thinking about doing this death march\ntrail for years and finally decided to do it this year. I then contacted Tham\nYau Kong, the expert in this SDRM trail and managed to rope in five other\nlike-minded people to join the trek,&#8221; says Dr Sen Nathan, one of the six\ntrekkers and the organiser of the SDRM expedition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was exhilarating but emotionally and physically\nchallenging even for healthy walkers like us. Imagine how difficult it was for\nthe starving, undernourished, malaria and dysentery-stricken POWs had to endure,\u201d\nSen adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SDRM trekking tour started at Kg Bauto, Telupid, on 19\nApril and concluded in Kg Muruk, Ranau, on 24 April. The group attended the\nspecial ANZAC Day Dawn Service on 25 April to complete their SDRM tour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I applaud this group effort for taking up the\nchallenge of the Death March trek. While historically, it was the Australian\nPOWs and Japanese soldiers who were much involved, we often forget that many\nlocal heroes provided welfare to the POWs when they were able to, more so when\nbrave enough to as they too faced much affliction if caught. It&#8217;s good for the\nlocal community also to learn this part of history,&#8221; comments Sabah\nTourism Board CEO Noredah Othman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn an annual basis, the Sandakan Day Memorial is\ncommemorated at the Sandakan Memorial Park on 15 August.
