{"id":204292,"date":"2022-04-29T02:15:27","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T19:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/?p=204292"},"modified":"2022-04-29T03:46:59","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T20:46:59","slug":"airline-traffic-steps-up-in-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/2022\/04\/airline-traffic-steps-up-in-march\/","title":{"rendered":"Airline traffic steps up in March"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, 29 April 2022: There are signs of improved\ngrowth in international passenger demand as more Asian economies ease travel\nrestrictions to welcome back visitors after two years of lockdowns, the\nAssociation of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) reports in its latest traffic\nfigures for March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International passengers carried by the region&#8217;s airlines\nalmost tripled to a combined 3.5 million compared in March compared to the same\nmonth last year when the region&#8217;s airlines carried just 1.2 million passengers.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/AAPA_PR-600x355.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-204324 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/355;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, demand remained a low 10.8% of the 32.5\nmillion passengers carried in the pre-pandemic month of March 2019, as borders\nin the region reopened slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK),\ninternational passenger demand jumped by 205.4% year-on-year, surpassing a\n64.0% year-on-year expansion in available seat capacity. As a result, the\naverage international passenger load factor rose significantly, by 23.9\npercentage points to 51.6% in March, surpassing the 50% mark for the first time\nsince the pandemic took hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, rising headwinds on multiple fronts dampened\ntrade activity after a relatively steady start to the year. Production\ndisruptions and congestion at China&#8217;s major ports and international trade\nsanctions in relation to the Ukraine-Russia war strained global supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These challenging conditions had some short-term impacts on\nthe region&#8217;s air cargo markets. International air cargo demand as measured in\ninternational freight tonne-kilometres (FTK) recorded its first monthly\nyear-on-year decline, by 1.3%, after 14 consecutive months of growth. However,\nthis was mitigated by still strong demand from the major economies. Growth in\ncommercial passenger operations helped drive a 5.1% year-on-year expansion in\noffered freight capacity, resulting in a 4.5 percentage point decline in the\naverage international freight load factor to 70.4% for the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the results, AAPA director general Subhas\nMenon said: &#8220;After two years of coping with the pandemic, a growing number\nof Asian governments have begun to treat Covid-19 as endemic, as high\nvaccination levels are achieved in parallel. The progressive reopening of\nborders and easing of restrictions, including removing quarantines for\nvaccinated travellers and reduced testing requirements, have positively\nimpacted international travel demand.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Menon added, &#8220;However, some uncertainty remains, as the\npace of reopening continues to vary across the region, with some governments\ntaking a more cautious approach. Major markets such as China and Japan remain\nlargely closed off to international visitors. More broadly, elevated fuel\nprices and inflation across major economies and the weakening of selected Asian\ncurrencies may also affect the pace and extent of recovery in the region&#8217;s\ntravel markets.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He concluded, &#8220;While the recent easing of travel\nrestrictions is very much welcome by the industry, incoherent and uneven border\ncontrol measures across economies continue to confuse travellers and hinder\ntravel recovery.
