{"id":204097,"date":"2022-04-25T02:15:56","date_gmt":"2022-04-24T19:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/?p=204097"},"modified":"2022-04-25T03:03:58","modified_gmt":"2022-04-24T20:03:58","slug":"wttc-launches-sustainability-basics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/2022\/04\/wttc-launches-sustainability-basics\/","title":{"rendered":"WTTC launches sustainability basics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MANILA, 25 April 2022: The World Travel &amp; Tourism Council (WTTC) has launched its <em><strong>\u2018Hotel Sustainability Basics\u2019<\/strong><\/em>, a globally recognised and coordinated set of criteria that all hotels should implement as a minimum to drive responsible Travel &amp; Tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched last week at WTTC&#8217;s Global Summit hosted in Manila,\nit will help hotels address and improve their environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/hotel-sustainability-basics-600x312.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-204113 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/312;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Developed by the industry for the industry, it highlights 12\nactions for hotel sustainability. It will help raise the base level of\nsustainability across the entire hospitality industry by providing every hotel\nwith a starting point on its sustainability journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative has already gained support from major global\ngroups such as Jin Jiang International, including their affiliates Jin Jiang\nHotels, Louvre Hotels Group and Radisson Hotel Group, Accor, Barcel\u00f3 Hotel\nGroup, Meli\u00e1 Hotels International, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), as\nwell as key hotel associations worldwide such as the Caribbean Hotel and\nTourism Association (CHTA), the Hotel Association of India (HAI) and Huazhu\nHotels Group. Collectively this represents more than 50,000 hotels worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WTTC\u2019s \u2018Hotel Sustainability Basics\u2019 provides the global\nhospitality sector with a baseline of positive actions to be taken to ensure\nthey meet at least the minimum sustainability requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this is just the beginning of their journey. WTTC\nurges the sector to seek constant improvements beyond the 12 basic criteria.\nWhether an individual business or part of a larger group, every hotel moves on\nto more advanced frameworks and greater sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This initiative acts as a stepping stone to the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablehospitalityalliance.org\/our-work\/pathway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality<\/a> which will enable every hotel to take a strategic and progressive approach to achieve a positive environmental impact, whatever their starting point.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;WTTC President &amp;\nCEO Julia Simpson said: &#8220;We are launching the Hotel Sustainability Basics\nto ensure no hotel, however small, is left behind in the drive to introduce a\nbasis sustainability measures within a minimum level the next three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sustainability is non-negotiable, but not every small\nhotel has access to the science of making a difference. It gives everyone\naccess to a global standard and allows consumers to travel confidently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The criteria, developed by WTTC in close collaboration with\nleading global brands and industry associations, focus on fundamental actions\nfor hotel sustainability and address tourism&#8217;s impact on the planet across a\nspectrum of critical issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These criteria include actions to measure and reduce energy\nuse, measure and reduce water use, identify and reduce waste, and measure and\nreduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also includes a linen reuse programme, the use of green\ncleaning products, the elimination of plastic straws, stirrers, and single-use\nplastic water bottles, the implementation of bulk amenity dispensers, and\nmeasures to benefit local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WTTC is now calling upon hotel operators, owners,\nassociations, and investors worldwide to officially support the initiative and\nwork across their networks to implement the criteria over the coming three\nyears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance Chair Wolfgang Neumann <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>said: \u201cEvery industry must do its part to ensure the future\nof our planet and its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While many companies take great strides and lead the way,\nothers are only now taking their first steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;By understanding the simplest steps hotels can take to\nbecome more sustainable, the Hotel Sustainability Basics will help raise the\nbase level of sustainability across the entire hospitality industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis initiative acts as a steppingstone to the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablehospitalityalliance.org\/our-work\/pathway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality<\/a> which will enable every hotel to take a strategic and progressive approach to achieve a positive environmental impact, whatever their starting point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global Sustainable Tourism Council CEO Randy Durband added:\n&#8220;The GSTC Industry Criteria for Hotels serve as the global standard for\nsustainable hospitality and the Basics map to eight of those that have been\nfrequently mentioned by our global partners as essential first steps.
