{"id":204017,"date":"2022-04-22T03:15:22","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T20:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/?p=204017"},"modified":"2022-04-22T05:44:48","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T22:44:48","slug":"are-cities-ready-to-adopt-sustainable-tourism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/2022\/04\/are-cities-ready-to-adopt-sustainable-tourism\/","title":{"rendered":"Are cities ready to adopt sustainable tourism?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MANILA, 22 April 2022: How prepared are the\nworld&#8217;s popular city destinations to adopt sustainable travel and tourism\ngrowth?&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Travel &amp; Tourism Council and\nJLL address the question in a new report released Wednesday that identifies\nwhat makes a city better prepared for Travel &amp; Tourism growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Copyright \u00a9 World Travel &amp; Tourism Council\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RsLy_y1h3dc?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Destination 2030: Global cities&#8217; readiness\nfor sustainable tourism growth&#8217; was released during WTTC\u2019s 21st Global Summit\nin Manila, Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts looked at 63 global cities measuring and categorising them in one of five levels of \u201creadiness\u201d while providing attainable solutions to promote sustainable growth in tourism activity in each destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WTTC President &amp; CEO Julia Simpson said: \u201cTravel &amp; Tourism plays an incredibly important role in a city&#8217;s economy, boosting GDP and creating jobs and improving the livelihoods of those who rely on our sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are delighted to continue our\npartnership with JLL, building on our initial report launched in 2019 with a\nspecial focus on sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor a city to truly thrive and for Travel\n&amp; Tourism to develop in a sustainable manner, stakeholders need to\nunderstand how prepared the city is for the expected growth in tourism and the\nresulting challenges and opportunities that lay ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe notion of \u2018readiness\u2019 has a ripple\neffect throughout the hospitality and tourism industry,\u201d said JLL Hotels &amp;\nHospitality global CEO Gilda Perez-Alvarado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe progression and planning that a\ncountry, region or destination achieves will impact the financial health of the\nindustries that make up the tourism industry. This includes property values,\ntax generation and workforce development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the report, the\n&#8220;readiness&#8221; levels range from emerging to established-market tourism\nhubs with varying levels of infrastructure. It explains the current\nopportunities and challenges faced by cities and offers recommendations for\nbuilding and maintaining tourism activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the five typologies will require\ndifferent approaches to development, no one typology is better than another,\nand all will demand proactiveness in strategic planning and implementation at\nthe destination level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Readiness\nlevels<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dawning\nDevelopers<\/strong>, such as New Delhi and Riyadh, are\ncities with emerging tourism infrastructure, slower tourism growth, and lower\nvisitor concentration. Such destinations often have a clean slate in planning\nlong term tourism development with many opportunities ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Emerging\nPerformers<\/strong>, such as Dubrovnik and Buenos Aires, are\ncities that are experiencing growing tourism momentum, enabled by emerging\ntourism infrastructure, and providing tremendous opportunities for strategic\ndevelopment. However, destinations in this category may experience pressures\nand challenges such as overcrowding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Balanced\nDynamics<\/strong>, such as Auckland and Vancouver, are\ncities that have established tourism infrastructure and potential for further\nTravel &amp; Tourism growth across both leisure and business segments whilst\nbalancing scale and concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mature\nPerformers<\/strong>, such as Miami, Berlin, and Hong Kong,\nare cities with strong leisure and business travel dynamics and established\ntourism infrastructure. As these destinations look to further drive Travel\n&amp; Tourism growth, they will need to proactively consider potential pressures\nand opportunities for diversification to avoid strains linked to visitor\nvolumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Managing\nMomentum<\/strong>, such as Amsterdam, London, and Las Vegas,\nare cities with a historically high growth momentum, supported by an\nestablished tourism infrastructure. Destinations within this typology are more\nlikely than \u2018Mature Performers\u2019 to have already reached the stage of feeling\nthe pressures of balancing scale and concentration as they continue to benefit\nfrom Travel &amp; Tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The readiness categories were determined by\nanalysing data on 79 indicators within eight pillars. In addition to the six\npillars included in the previous report, \u00ad\u2013 scale, concentration, leisure,\nbusiness, urban readiness, and policy prioritisation \u2013 two new pillars were\nadded: environmental readiness and safety and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These additions allowed for an improved\nfocus on sustainability, social impact, and safety and security in conjunction\nwith the more conventional indicators that continue to drive the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic has shown the pressing need\nfor a holistic view when addressing destination planning and management.
