The ascent of the second highest peak in Southeast Asia will commence on Friday, 22 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image_6483441-3-600x369.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-203937 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/369;\" \/><figcaption><em>Datuk Joniston Bangkuai (left) received a copy of the \u2018East Kinabalu: A Guide To The Eastern Part of Mount Kinabalu\u2019 book from Dr Ravi Mandalam (right).<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, Kota Kinabalu Rotary Club member and the charity\nclimb&#8217;s coordinator, Dr Ravi Mandalam, and senior Rotarian Datuk Abdullah\nSibil, met with Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai to invite\nhim to flag off the charity climb at a ceremony on 21 April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Ravi stated that most participants are first-time\nclimbers and that Mount Kinabalu would be an excellent choice to start climbing\nendeavours while also promoting Sabah&#8217;s iconic charm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The radiologist, who hails from India, is no stranger to Mount Kinabalu, having scaled the peak&nbsp;56 times and written a book \u2018East Kinabalu: A Guide To The Eastern Part of Mount Kinabalu.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Ravi, who has lived in Sabah for 28 years, stated at the\nmeeting that the Rotary Club decided to climb Mount Kinabalu after learning\nabout his experiences through his book. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo me, Mount Kinabalu is the crown jewel of Sabah. It is\nthe state\u2019s treasure, a botanical paradise, and a biodiversity hotspot,\u201d said\nDr Ravi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Joniston stated that Mount Kinabalu is an iconic\ndestination in Sabah and that many people have organised a climbing mission or\ncharity climb to the peak for a good cause. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s also an excellent way to introduce Sabah and our\nheritage mountain to Rotarians who have never been here or climbed the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mount Kinabalu, in particular, is a popular\ndestination for international climbers.
