{"id":203852,"date":"2022-04-19T06:15:34","date_gmt":"2022-04-18T23:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/?p=203852"},"modified":"2022-04-19T06:33:24","modified_gmt":"2022-04-18T23:33:24","slug":"international-flights-return-to-sabah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/2022\/04\/international-flights-return-to-sabah\/","title":{"rendered":"International flights return to Sabah"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>KOTA KINABALU, 19 April 2022: Singapore will continue to be\na key market and an important hub for Sabah following the return of direct\ninternational flights between the city-state and Kota Kinabalu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sabah\u2019s Kinabalu International Airport welcomed its first\ninternational flight with a water cannon salute after an absence of two years.\nThe AirAsia aircraft (Flight AK1794) landed from Singapore on Saturday carrying\n119 passengers, of which 30% were Singaporeans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image_648344-600x381.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-203868 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/381;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister\ncum Sabah Tourism Board chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai was on hand to greet\nthem upon their arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like to commend AirAsia for being the first airline\nto reopen international flights for Sabah\u2026this is a momentous occasion for all\ninvolved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.ttrweekly.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/image_6483441-2-600x342.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-203869 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/342;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Singapore is a very important market to Sabah as it\nhas been our focus market for many years now, and it is also a highly important\nhub for Sabah as it connects out other focus markets around the world into\nSabah,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noting Singaporeans&#8217; love of nature, diving, and adventure,\nJoniston said Singaporeans can now look forward to travelling to Sabah and\nindulging in their passions once more with the reinstatement of the Singapore &#8211;\nKota Kinabalu route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joniston said his ministry, through the Sabah Tourism Board,\nplanned several promotional initiatives to entice Singaporeans to return to\nSabah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 22 to 28 April, Sabah Tourism Board and Sabah\u2019s tourism\nindustry players will join the Travel Malaysia Digital Fair to kick-start\npromotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Through this Fair, the Singaporean consumers will be\npresented with a selection of tourism products and stays. We received strong\nsupport from the Sabah industry players as well, whereby they highlight their\npopular packages such as wildlife, nature, and adventure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Looking back to a pre-pandemic time, the fair has\nmanaged to attract many Singaporeans to Sabah, and we are confident this trend\nwill return as currently, enquiries from Singapore regarding Sabah tourism\npackages have already started to pour in,&#8221; said Joniston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Smart Locals, one of Singapore&#8217;s leading online\npublishers, will link the event&#8217;s platform to a Sabah digital campaign to help\nthe state&#8217;s tourism players succeed at the Travel Malaysia Digital Fair, he\nadded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Joniston, the low-cost carrier AirAsia has been\nan important contributor to Sabah&#8217;s economy through tourism and hospitality\nsince its presence in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I am pleased to learn that AirAsia has expanded its\nofferings beyond flights and is now home to several thriving e-commerce\nventures, namely its one-stop platform, the AirAsia Super App. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn line with the transition to an endemic phase, I believe\nthat this resumption of international flights comes at the right time for both\ntourists and locals in Sabah, who have been excitedly anticipating and planning\ntheir travels,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Sabah received 126,000\npassengers through Singapore, with 34,000 Singaporean travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, AirAsia (airlines) chief commercial officer Tan\nMai Yin stated that the airline is currently operating thrice-weekly flights\nbetween Singapore and Kota Kinabalu, with daily flights beginning on 29 April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are also reviewing direct flights from Thailand,\nthe Philippines, and Indonesia to Kota Kinabalu.
