KUCHING, Sarawak, 4 September 2026: Sarawak has won the bid to host the 38th International Conference on Microelectronics (ICM) 2026, bringing the prestigious international conference back to Malaysia after more than thirty years.

Taking place from 7 to 10 December 2026 in Kuching, at the Borneo Cultures Museum as a principal conference venue, ICM 2026 is expected to welcome more than 300 delegates, connecting researchers, engineers, academics and industry professionals from the international microelectronics community to exchange expertise and explore developments shaping the future of the sector.

Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn (centre) together with ICM 2026 organising committee and event collaborators.

Hosting ICM 2026 directly supports Sarawak’s development priorities under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, particularly in innovation, digital transformation, human capital and advanced manufacturing. As Sarawak develops its semiconductor ecosystem, the conference will connect global expertise with local talent, research and industry, while advancing artificial intelligence (AI) as an accelerator for microelectronics development.

The conference will feature a broad technical programme comprising regular papers, special sessions, cross-society special sessions, an embedded workshop, live demonstrations, tutorials and a technical industry visit, creating multiple platforms for researchers and industry practitioners to exchange knowledge and explore emerging developments in circuits, systems and microelectronics.

Additional activities being developed alongside the main conference include a Sino-Malaysia workshop, CASS Standards workshop, and CAS Industry Forum, further extending ICM 2026 beyond the conventional academic conference format and creating opportunities for industry engagement, standards discussions and international collaboration.

“ICM 2026 is an important step towards the Sarawak Government’s ambition of building a high-income economy driven by innovation and technology,” said The Honourable Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak. “For Sarawak to compete in the industries of the future, we must create opportunities for our people to learn from the best, participate in global networks and turn knowledge into real opportunities. ICM brings that global community directly to us, creating opportunities for our talent and industry to learn, collaborate and turn knowledge into new possibilities for Sarawak.”

“Winning ICM 2026 demonstrates the strategic value of attracting specialised international conferences that align with local development priorities,” said Jason Tan Chin Foo, Chief Executive Officer of Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak). “The conference is expected to generate RM2.5 million in total estimated economic impact, but its greater value is what it can leave in the long term. ICM can be a powerful catalyst to strengthen Sarawak’s growing electronics sector through new knowledge, connections and opportunities that continue well beyond the conference. BESarawak is proud to support legacy-driven events such as ICM 2026.”

“The next big step for AI is not only about smarter software, but also building better and more efficient technology to power it,” said Ts. Ir. Dr Fakhrul Zaman Rokhani, IEEE CASS Vice President for Education and Communications and General Chair for ICM2026. “ICM 2026 will explore how we can make AI faster, more energy-efficient and more sustainable through advances in microelectronics and hardware. Bringing these global conversations to Malaysia via Sarawak gives professionals and young talent in the region greater access to the ideas and technologies shaping our future.”

Organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Circuits and Systems Society (IEEE CASS), with the IEEE CASS Malaysia Chapter as a co-financial sponsor and active contributor to the organising committee, ICM 2026 is supported by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor Sdn Bhd, and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak. The Academy of Sciences Malaysia is also participating as ICM 2026’s Science & Technology Partner.

ICM 2026 is supported by the wider IEEE Circuits and Systems community, with technical co-sponsorship from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and 13 IEEE CASS chapters worldwide. The conference has also received IEEE Xplore publication approval. At the same time, selected papers will be invited for extended submission to IEEE Transactions on VLSI Systems, Neuroelectronics, and the Journal of Integrated Circuits and Systems, subject to each journal’s review process.

Researchers, scientists, academics, entrepreneurs, engineers, policymakers, and industry professionals working across circuits, systems, and related technologies are invited to be part of ICM 2026 in Sarawak and contribute to the conversations, collaborations, and innovations shaping the future of microelectronics. For registration, call for papers and sponsorship opportunities, visit www.ieee-icm.org.

BANGKOK, 31 August 2026: Dusit Hotels and Resorts, the hotel arm of Dusit International, one of Thailand’s leading hotel and property development companies, is set to introduce its locally focused, affordable lifestyle brand, ASAI Hotels, to Malaysia, with the opening of ASAI Gamuda Cove.

Scheduled to welcome its first guests on 15 September 2026, the 13-storey hotel is located within the 1,530-acre Gamuda Cove township, approximately 20 minutes by car from Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The largest ASAI property to date, it is also Dusit’s second hotel in Malaysia, following Dusit Princess Melaka, and the first ASAI hotel to open outside a city neighbourhood. It joins the brand’s three established properties in Bangkok and Kyoto.

Embodying the ASAI Hotels slogan, Live Local, the hotel places some of Selangor’s most distinctive nature experiences right on guests’ doorstep. It sits beside the 1,111-acre Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands, a nature reserve and wildlife sanctuary where visitors can observe native wildlife and explore a rare freshwater wetland landscape. Alongside it, the 90-acre Wetlands Arboretum serves as a living tree museum, with walking routes, birdwatching, and environmental learning activities that offer further opportunities to experience the area’s biodiversity up close.

Also nearby is the family-friendly SplashMania Waterpark, home to 39 slides and attractions, as well as Discovery Park, an outdoor recreation and entertainment hub offering activities for families and adventure seekers. An electric tram network connects key destinations across the township, allowing guests to move easily between its nature, recreation, and commercial areas without relying on private vehicles.

ASAI Gamuda Cove brings together 280 rooms, locally inspired dining, and easy access to wetlands and waterpark attractions in a well-connected destination near Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Sepang International Circuit.

Across 280 thoughtfully planned rooms, ASAI Gamuda Cove’s design focuses on comfort, efficient space use, and flexibility. Options range from compact rooms for solo travellers and couples to balcony rooms, bunk-bed configurations, and a two-room family category sleeping up to six guests. Selected rooms face the wetlands, and all include fast Wi-Fi, smart televisions, walk-in showers, and practical storage.

Beyond the guest rooms, the hotel features an infinity pool overlooking the wetlands, a gym, co-working areas, flexible meeting and event spaces accommodating up to 100 people, and three dining venues centred on Malaysian flavours, complemented by Thai and international dishes.

The all-day dining restaurant Nasi & Khao draws on the comfort-food traditions shared by Malaysia and Thailand, bringing Malaysian classics, vibrant Thai flavours, and familiar Western dishes together in a relaxed setting. Tea Shop provides a warm, community-focused space for curated teas and light bites from morning until late, while the Pool Bar pairs handcrafted cocktails, refreshments, and snacks with views across the infinity pool and Paya Indah Discovery Wetlands.

The hotel will also place guests approximately 20 minutes by car from Sepang International Circuit, where Formula 1 will return for the first time since 2017 with the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, taking place from 2–4 October 2026.

“ASAI Gamuda Cove shows how our Live Local approach can work in a setting where nature, recreation, and a growing community come together,” said Dusit International Group CEO Chanin Donavanik. “It will give travellers a comfortable and practical base, provide residents with new places to meet and dine, and put the wetlands and the wider township within easy reach. Opening just ahead of Formula 1’s return gives us an excellent opportunity to demonstrate what ASAI offers to visitors from Malaysia and around the world. And the hotel’s role will extend well beyond the race weekend: we want every stay to help guests experience more of the area and connect with the people who call it home.”

ASAI Hotels was created for travellers who value well-designed essentials, accessible rates, and a closer connection to the places they visit. Each property combines compact, functional rooms with social, dining, and co-working spaces shaped by its location. ASAI Gamuda Cove will become the brand’s fourth operating hotel, joining ASAI Bangkok Chinatown and ASAI Bangkok Sathorn in Thailand, and ASAI Kyoto Shijo in Japan.

ASAI’s Malaysian debut will also mark the latest step in Dusit’s expansion in the country, following the opening of Dusit Princess Melaka in December 2024. The company’s presence in Malaysia is set to grow further in October 2026 with the opening of Dusit Princess Ipoh, details of which will be announced soon.

“We are delighted to welcome Disney Cruise Line to Langkawi and to have the island included as a new port of call for select sailings of the Disney Adventure. This is an exciting opportunity for Langkawi to welcome a new audience to our shores and introduce them to the destination beyond what they may already know about the island. We look forward to working closely with our tourism partners to ensure that guests have a memorable experience during their time in Langkawi,” said Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Haji Iskandar bin Datuk Haji Mohd Kaus.

Visitors who choose to go ashore can spend their day in Langkawi according to their interests, as the island offers a range of experiences suited to families and travellers alike, from nature-based activities and family-friendly attractions to local crafts and cultural experiences. The island is also home to Southeast Asia’s first UNESCO Global Geopark, offering visitors an opportunity to encounter the geological and natural heritage that distinguishes the Langkawi archipelago.

All Disney Adventure sailings will continue to begin and end in Singapore.
LANGKAWI, 26 August 2026: At Pantai Tengah, a surf morning can begin before anyone gets in the water. Coffee is poured.

Breakfast comes out of takeaway boxes. Surf apps are checked, the wind is watched, and eyes turn towards the horizon. Boards sit ready on the sand while the small group gathered on the beach waits to see what the sea has decided.

Some mornings bring waves. Some don’t. Nobody seems particularly bothered. For Langkawi’s growing surfing community, the waiting is part of it.

When the wind changes

Langkawi’s seasons shape life on the island, and surfing is no different. When the monsoon winds shift and conditions begin to change, surfboards come out, and messages start circulating about the latest swell.

Weather forecasts help to pin the season from April to November during the southwest monsoon, with the most promising wave conditions occurring from July through September.

Small groups make their way to the west coast, particularly around Pantai Tengah, hoping the forecasts are right. Visitors who have surfed here before return, while locals keep a close eye on the conditions. There are no guarantees. A promising forecast can produce nothing, while an ordinary morning can turn into a memorable session.

That unpredictability has helped shape the character of surfing here. The focus isn’t on chasing the biggest wave. It’s on being there when the conditions come together.

Learning to wait

Ask Jay what surfing has taught him and his answer comes quickly: patience. He first got into surfing in Bali before continuing in Cherating, on Malaysia’s east coast. What started as curiosity eventually became a different way of looking at the ocean.

You can’t control the wind or make the waves arrive. You can prepare, watch the conditions and wait.

Today, Jay passes that lesson on through his surf school. For beginners, the goal may be to stand on a board for the first time. But the experience is also about learning to move with the water rather than trying to fight it. The first successful ride is often the moment everything clicks.

The surf shop where everyone meets

For Han, the day moves between the water and his surf shop, where conversations about tides and forecasts easily turn into conversations about everything else.

His café has become a natural meeting point for the surfing community. Surfers stop by for coffee, travellers swap stories and beginners celebrate their first successful ride.

A Japanese photographer has also spent time with Han and his group, documenting the everyday side of the community — the sessions, the people and the moments between them.

The social side of surfing doesn’t stop when the boards are put away. In many ways, that is when the community comes together.

A community built one save at a time

Langkawi’s surf community has grown gradually, through people introducing friends to the water, visitors returning for another season and surfers sharing what they know.

A request for a lesson can lead to another. A first session can turn into a regular habit. Someone who arrived as a visitor might come back with a friend the following year.

Today, locals surf alongside visitors and experienced surfers encourage beginners as they learn. Children are starting their first lessons, while more seasoned riders still celebrate the small improvements that come with every session.

There is little interest in hierarchy. Whether you’ve been surfing for years or are still figuring out how to stand on the board, everyone starts in the same place: waiting for the next wave.

Let the island set the pace

Surfing requires you to pay attention to what is happening around you. In Langkawi, that means learning to read the wind, the rain, the tide and the changing conditions.

Experience helps, but nature still has the final say. Sometimes the forecast promises perfect conditions and delivers nothing. Sometimes a regular morning produces a few rides worth remembering. Over time, surfers learn when to paddle out, when to wait and when to simply call it a day.

Waves that bring people together

Spend time around Langkawi’s surfing community, and the appeal becomes clear when you watch a beginner catch their first wave.

Someone cheers. A pop-up gets applauded. The surfer comes back to shore smiling, ready to try again. Those small moments are what keep people coming back. By sunset, boards are rinsed and put away. Someone checks tomorrow’s forecast.

Nobody knows yet whether there will be waves in the morning.

They’ll probably meet anyway. Surfing in Langkawi isn’t defined by the size of the swell. It’s found in the people who keep showing up, watching the horizon and waiting for the next wave.

SIBU, Sarawak, 21 August 2026: Sarawak is expanding its pool of skilled business events professionals, with 26 participants graduating from the Sarawak Business Events Accelerator Programme (BEAP) as its 2026 two-city rollout concluded in Sibu.

Together with 29 graduates from Miri in July, BEAP has now equipped 55 industry professionals with the skills to participate more actively in Sarawak’s growing business events economy. Co-developed by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), the Miri Business Events Committee and Sibu Business Events Committee, in collaboration with the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) Sarawak Chapter, the programme brings industry development directly to Sarawak’s business events cities.

Participants gained practical knowledge across the full event lifecycle, from developing commercially viable concepts and financial planning to operations and post-event evaluation. BEAP focused on the practical use of artificial intelligence to improve productivity, creativity, and decision-making in business event planning and delivery.

Jason Tan Chin Foo, Chief Executive Officer of BESarawak, said that continuous learning is essential in today’s evolving business events industry.

“It’s no longer enough to know how to organise and deliver an event. Industry professionals need to understand the business behind it, from developing commercially viable concepts and managing resources to adopting new technologies and responding to evolving organiser and delegate expectations.

“Sibu is one of the preferred convention destinations in Sarawak, so the demand and business opportunities are there. The next step is to strengthen the local expertise, services and solutions around that demand, enabling Sibu’s industry to take on a greater share of the role, develop new business opportunities and capture more of the value generated by business events.”

BEAP also supports MACEOS’ national commitment to strengthening professional standards and developing industry talent across Malaysia. Lim Win Nee, Vice President of MACEOS Education, said: “Malaysia’s competitiveness as a business events destination is strengthened when industry capabilities grow across all our destinations. Every market has a role to play, and in destinations such as Sibu, a strong and capable local industry can make a meaningful difference to the quality of events, the opportunities for local businesses and the overall destination experience.

“By making professional development more accessible, we can strengthen expertise where it is needed, raise standards across the country and build a more connected and future-ready Malaysian business events industry.”

The completion of BEAP’s first two-city rollout marks another step in BESarawak’s broader efforts to develop the people and businesses behind the business events industry, allowing greater contributions towards Sarawak’s growth.

KUCHING, Malaysia, 17 August 2026: Business Events Sarawak paid a courtesy visit to the Premier of Sarawak, The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, to discuss the next phase of Sarawak’s business events growth and strengthen collaboration in support of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

Building on Sarawak’s strong industry foundation and international reputation, discussions focused on the next phase of growth and how business events can create greater value for the destination through economic opportunities, knowledge exchange, industry development, investment and benefits for local communities.

A courtesy call to The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg was led by The Honourable Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

During the visit, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, said the Sarawak Government’s continued support strengthens the industry’s ability to build on its progress.

“Sarawak has built a strong international reputation in business events, strengthened by our focus on legacy-driven outcomes. We are now seeing that translate into more events and wider opportunities for local businesses and industries. With the Sarawak Government’s continued support for the industry, we are well positioned to build on this progress, attract bigger opportunities and ensure the benefits extend across more sectors and communities in Sarawak as competition across ASEAN grows.”

The discussion during the visit highlighted infrastructure, venue and accommodation capacity, and air connectivity as important factors in strengthening Sarawak’s ability to attract larger and more diverse international and national business events. The events and tourism industries are also encouraged to explore creative ways for Sarawak’s growing range of venues and facilities to complement one another in supporting conventions, exhibitions, corporate meetings and incentives, performances and other major events.

With Borneo Convention Centre Kuching 2 (BCCK2) in progress and improved air connectivity through AirBorneo, the discussion also highlighted the opportunity for Sarawak to tap into and drive more business events and tourism from across the wider Asia Pacific region.

Datu Hii Chang Kee, Deputy State Secretary (Operation) and Chairman of BESarawak, emphasised the importance of stronger collaboration and coordination to ensure business events contribute to Sarawak’s wider development.

“As the industry grows, our role in connecting business events more closely with PCDS 2030 becomes even more important. With a growing pipeline of larger events addressing globally relevant issues across industries, we need to consider how each opportunity can contribute to Sarawak’s broader priorities, whether through investment, talent development, industry growth, knowledge exchange, or international partnerships.”

“This is where stronger coordination becomes essential. Government agencies, industry and institutions need to work together so that when these events come to Sarawak, we are ready to maximise the opportunities and benefits they can create for the destination.”

This direction builds on Sarawak’s growing focus on legacy impact, with business events increasingly used to create long-term benefits through knowledge, innovation and partnerships.”

Jason Tan Chin Foo, Chief Executive Officer of BESarawak, said BESarawak is clear about how it intends to build on the strengths of the past two decades.

“With the strong support of the Sarawak Government, we are excited about the next phase of growth. We have built significant momentum over the years, and our focus now is to use that momentum strategically by being intentional about the events we pursue, strengthening Sarawak’s business events ecosystem, and creating more value from every opportunity we secure.”

For more than five decades, Royal Cliff Hotels Group has been committed to balancing exceptional hospitality with environmental responsibility. Under the visionary leadership of Khun Panga Vathanakul, Managing Director, sustainability has been embedded into the organisation’s philosophy since the hotel’s inception. Guided by the belief that business success should go hand in hand with environmental stewardship, community development and the long-term sustainability of the tourism industry, Royal Cliff has consistently pioneered initiatives that create lasting positive impact.

This vision has evolved into Green Multiples @ Royal Cliff, the group’s comprehensive sustainability programme that integrates innovative environmental practices across every aspect of its operations. The initiative encompasses advanced wastewater treatment systems, biogas production from food waste, organic composting, and a pioneering Green Meeting concept that enables conference organisers and delegates to reduce the environmental footprint of their events.

Beyond operational excellence, Royal Cliff is equally committed to cultivating a culture of sustainability by actively inspiring its management team, employees, guests, and business partners to participate in its environmental initiatives.
